Book Synopsis Alternate Histories and Nineteenth-Century Literature by : Ben Carver
Download or read book Alternate Histories and Nineteenth-Century Literature written by Ben Carver and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the first thematic survey and analysis of nineteenth-century writing that imagined outcomes that history might have produced. Narratives of possible worlds and scenarios—referred to here as “alternate histories”—proliferated during the nineteenth century and clustered around pressing themes and emergent disciplines of knowledge. This study examines accounts of undefeated Napoleons after Waterloo, alternative genealogies of western civilization from antiquity to the (nineteenth-century) present day, the imagination of variant histories on other worlds, lost-world fictions that “discovered” improved relations between men and women, and the use of alternate history in America to reconceive the relationship between the New World and the Old. The “untimely” imagination of other histories interrogated the impact of new techniques of knowledge on the nature of history itself. This book sheds light on the history of speculative thought, and the relationship between literature and the history of ideas in the nineteenth century.

This book was released on 1998-10-23 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Harris Lenowitz explores the fascinating history of Jewish messianic movements. Looking in detail at all of the Jewish messiahs about whom anything is known, he introduces each of these figures in turn, and offers extensive excerpts of the original texts that tell their stories. The messiahs whom we meet in these pages range from the inspiring to the tragic and bizarre. By examining the messianic idea in the tradition which gave birth to it, Lenowitz both sheds new light on this engrossing aspect of Jewish history and provides a firmer basis for understanding contemporary messianic groups.

Book excerpt: In 1850, the Irish Potato Famine took the life of Alroy’s parents leaving him with no means of supporting himself. Alroy, a 15-year-old lad took passage to America by working in the ship’s galley, a harsh environment aboard a vessel infested with influenza and measles. During the voyage, he met a family wanting the same, a new life in America. This fictional historical narrative tells of the many hardships, the excitement of discovering a new world, methods of travel, and romance between him and a young girl, that began while traveling westward. Because of her age, Alroy considered her as a sister, expressed no romantic feeling for her at that time. Alroy was not yet a man, but insisted on becoming one by going out looking for a life he thought would be there for the taking. After leaving the family, he experienced what life was like living with Native Americans during the American Indian Wars between the U.S. Army and the many natives fighting to hold onto the their ancestry customs and traditions. He experienced life; through the hardships, the sorrows of losing the ones he loved, and his part in the wars during a time in American History that brought so much pain to both the American Indian and the white settlers in the west.
Download or read book 50 Jewish Messiahs written by Jerry Rabow and published by Gefen Publishing House Ltd. This book was released on 2002 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a little known fact that there have been more than fifty prominent Jewish Messiahs. These characters, though unrenowned today, inspired messianic fervour that at times seized the whole Jewish, Christian, Muslim and even secular worlds. The stories of these fifty Messiahs, both male and female, are unknown -- suppressed by Jewish religious authorities or ignored by historians of all religions. Until now. In this book, these Jewish Messiahs are remembered, and now their forgotten stories -- whether humorous, bizarre, tragic or solemn -- are finally told. The Messiah who killed the Pope; The Messiah who was saved from the Inquisition when the Pope hid him in the Vatican; The Messiah who demanded that his head be cut off in order to prove his immortality The Messiah who defied the Holy Roman Emperor; The 17th century Messiah whose followers continued their secret society into the 20th century. And to contemporary times and the story of the late Lubavitcher Rebbe, Menachem Mendel Schneerson, and how he inspired a passionate and devoted following. Above all, Fifty Jewish Messiahs examines humanity, not divinity, and history rather than theology. Taken together, these intriguing stories paint a vivid portrait of the universal and timeless human need for optimism, and hope in a better future.
