Book excerpt: From Ilona Andrews—#1 New York Times bestselling author of Magic Shifts and the Kate Daniels novels—comes a stark, seductive tale of a world torn asunder by supernatural gifts and irresistible passions... Karina Tucker is driving a van of children home from a field trip when an unplanned detour to a seemingly ordinary rest stop changes her life. There, she witnesses a world beyond humanity’s sight, of frightful powers and chaos, where she is in death’s grip...before an irresistibly dangerous male saves her—only to take her captive. For she is a rare commodity in the shadowy realm she’s entered. Karina soon finds herself caught in a violent civil war where those with inhuman powers strive to destroy each other without mercy. And it becomes all too clear that she must make a choice: submit and become a pawn, or take hold of her own destiny and fight for survival against impossible odds. Alphas: Origins originally appeared in Angels of Darkness. Praise for Ilona Andrews and the Kate Daniels Novels “Ilona Andrews pens my favorite flavor of keeper novel: tough characters, marvelous voice, fast-paced with that sharp edge of humor that adds the final grace note.”—Patricia Briggs, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Fire Touched “One of the brightest voices in urban fantasy. Book Synopsis The Origin and Evolution of Alpha-catenin in Epithelial Cell Polarity by : Daniel James Dickinson
Download or read book The Origin and Evolution of Alpha-catenin in Epithelial Cell Polarity written by Daniel James Dickinson and published by Stanford University. This book was released on 2011 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fundamental characteristic of metazoans is the formation of a simple, polarized epithelium. In higher animals, the structural integrity and functional polarization of simple epithelia require a cell-cell adhesion complex containing a classical cadherin, the Wnt-signaling protein β-catenin and the actin-binding protein α-catenin. I have investigated the evolutionary origins of epithelial cell polarity and of the cadherin-catenin complex. I show that the non-metazoan Dictyostelium discoideum forms a polarized epithelium that is essential for multicellular development. Although D. discoideum lacks a cadherin homolog, I have identified and characterized an α-catenin ortholog that binds a β-catenin-related protein. Both proteins are essential for formation of the epithelium, polarized protein secretion and proper multicellular morphogenesis. Thus the organizational principles of metazoan multicellularity may be more ancient than previously recognized, and the role of the catenins in cell polarity predates the evolution of Wnt signaling and classical cadherins.
Book Synopsis Primate Origins of Human Cognition and Behavior by : Tetsuro Matsuzawa
Download or read book Primate Origins of Human Cognition and Behavior written by Tetsuro Matsuzawa and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-06-30 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biologists and anthropologists in Japan have played a crucial role in the development of primatology as a scientific discipline. Publication of Primate Origins of Human Cognition and Behavior under the editorship of Tetsuro Matsuzawa reaffirms the pervasive and creative role played by the intellectual descendants of Kinji Imanishi and Junichiro Itani in the fields of behavioral ecology, psychology, and cognitive science. Matsuzawa and his colleagues-humans and other primate partners- explore a broad range of issues including the phylogeny of perception and cognition; the origin of human speech; learning and memory; recognition of self, others, and species; society and social interaction; and culture. With data from field and laboratory studies of more than 90 primate species and of more than 50 years of long-term research, the intellectual breadth represented in this volume makes it a major contribution to comparative cognitive science and to current views on the origin of the mind and behavior of humans.

Exlax in the communion juice, cooking Barbie, a pet turdle, discovering her gender, etc. Creativity! Where does it come from? How do the parents, teachers, even scientific professionals deal with it so that potentials aren't suppressed. But also so those dealing with the ultra-creatives aren't driven up the wall by the off-the-deep-end things their kids do. There's serious subject matter in this tome (especially the final "speeches"). But the plain preposterousness prior presented should be beneficial. Laughter is not only good medicine -- but also great therapy!!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emmanuel Neba-Fuh in this comprehensive chronological compilation and thorough narrative of the history of white supremacy in Africa provide an unflinching fresh case that African poverty - a central tenet of the “shithole” demonization, is not a natural feature of geography or a consequence of culture, but a direct product of imperial extraction from the continent – a practice that continues into the present. A brutal and nefarious tale of slave trade, genocides, massacres, dictators supported, progressive leaders murdered, weapon-smuggling, cloak-and-dagger secret services, corruption, international conspiracy, and spectacular military operations, he raised the most basic and fundamental question - how was Africa (the world’s richest continent) raped and reduced to what Donald J. Trump called “shithole?” By V. Mbanwie

Book Synopsis The Origins of Political Order by : Francis Fukuyama
Download or read book The Origins of Political Order written by Francis Fukuyama and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2011-04-12 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A landmark history of the origins of modern democratic societies by one of our most important political thinkers. A New York Times Notable Book for 2011 A Globe and Mail Best Books of the Year 2011 Title A Kirkus Reviews Best Nonfiction of 2011 title Virtually all human societies were once organized tribally, yet over time most developed new political institutions which included a central state that could keep the peace and uniform laws that applied to all citizens. Some went on to create governments that were accountable to their constituents. We take these institutions for granted, but they are absent or are unable to perform in many of today's developing countries—with often disastrous consequences for the rest of the world. Francis Fukuyama, author of the bestselling The End of History and the Last Man and one of our most important political thinkers, provides a sweeping account of how today's basic political institutions developed. The first of a major two-volume work, The Origins of Political Order begins with politics among our primate ancestors and follows the story through the emergence of tribal societies, the growth of the first modern state in China, the beginning of the rule of law in India and the Middle East, and the development of political accountability in Europe up until the eve of the French Revolution. Drawing on a vast body of knowledge—history, evolutionary biology, archaeology, and economics—Fukuyama has produced a brilliant, provocative work that offers fresh insights on the origins of democratic societies and raises essential questions about the nature of politics and its discontents.
Download or read book Alpha to Omega written by Alexander Humez and published by David R Godine Pub. This book was released on 1983 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first offering of this beloved duo, the Humez brothers take on the twenty-four letters of the Greek alphabet (plus those elusive "dead letters"), and through the device of the abecedarium bring the Greek culture and thought to life. From acoustics to zygote, they provide not only an engaging romp through the Greek language but also a series of glimpses into the world and man's place in it. The historical, philosophical, mathematical, cosmological, and political (all Greek words) approaches we take toward life, its description, elucidation, and evaluation, are all mainly derived from several thousand years of Greek culture. The vocabulary of language is a mirror of the minds of its speakers, and in this book we see the first reflections of the modern world.

Book Synopsis The Origins of Self by : Martin P. J. Edwardes
Download or read book The Origins of Self written by Martin P. J. Edwardes and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2019-07-22 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Origins of Self explores the role that selfhood plays in defining human society, and each human individual in that society. It considers the genetic and cultural origins of self, the role that self plays in socialisation and language, and the types of self we generate in our individual journeys to and through adulthood. Edwardes argues that other awareness is a relatively early evolutionary development, present throughout the primate clade and perhaps beyond, but self-awareness is a product of the sharing of social models, something only humans appear to do. The self of which we are aware is not something innate within us, it is a model of our self produced as a response to the models of us offered to us by other people. Edwardes proposes that human construction of selfhood involves seven different types of self. All but one of them are internally generated models, and the only non-model, the actual self, is completely hidden from conscious awareness. We rely on others to tell us about our self, and even to let us know we are a self.

Book excerpt: Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc (AKA) is an organization of service, scholarship, and sisterhood built around the premise of making life better for all mankind. The Sorority was the brainchild of a courageous African American college educated woman, Ethel Hedgeman Lyle. Forging ahead with the strength of her belief and desire that the college experience should provide a meaningful and purposeful road map that positively impacts the community, Soror Lyde sought out like-minded women that shared in the manifestation of her vision. In 1908, their efforts led to the establishment of AKA on the campus of Howard University.
