Clueless as to where they are or where they are going, their trunks have been axed. Bereft, they must accept the reality that they will die. Extreme opposites in their beliefs, values, and goals, there could never be a more mismatched pair. Arizona-born Frazier grumbles and grouses with every breath! Yet Denver-sophisticate Sugar defies despair with insistence that their dreams may yet be realized an insistence which both provokes and comforts Frazier. She insists that goodness can reach beyond their bleak circumstances to exceed their greatest hopes. Comparing conversations overheard as they were taken from their tree farms, they become convinced they are bound for Hawaii. Thoughts of being in Hawaii provide a much needed distraction as they journey across the Pacific Ocean. This story stretches the imagination to look beyond the obvious and consider what Good may be cloaked in even the darkest despair! What does Christmas have to do with any of this? Therein lies the mystery.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1897, as a white oligarchy made plans to allow the United States to annex Hawai'i, native Hawaiians organized a massive petition drive to protest. Ninety-five percent of the native population signed the petition, causing the annexation treaty to fail in the U.S. Senate. This event was unknown to many contemporary Hawaiians until Noenoe K. Silva rediscovered the petition in the process of researching this book. With few exceptions, histories of Hawai'i have been based exclusively on English-language sources. They have not taken into account the thousands of pages of newspapers, books, and letters written in the mother tongue of native Hawaiians. By rigorously analyzing many of these documents, Silva fills a crucial gap in the historical record. In so doing, she refutes the long-held idea that native Hawaiians passively accepted the erosion of their culture and loss of their nation, showing that they actively resisted political, economic, linguistic, and cultural domination. Drawing on Hawaiian-language texts, primarily newspapers produced in the nineteenth century and early twentieth, Silva demonstrates that print media was central to social communication, political organizing, and the perpetuation of Hawaiian language and culture. A powerful critique of colonial historiography, Aloha Betrayed provides a much-needed history of native Hawaiian resistance to American imperialism.

The latest in Pelican's Night Before Christmas series, this island tale is sure to enchant readers with its tropical twist on the Clement C. Moore classic. Hawaiian Night Before Christmas written and illustrated by Carolyn Macy, is a delightful book for children of all ages. It's Christmas Eve and Mama, Papa, and the keiki (children) have decorated a coconut tree, placed the lauhala (woven baskets) on the porch, and left a snack for Santa, or Kanakaloka, to enjoy. The book details Hawaiian Christmas traditions as the story unfolds. Not a gecko was stirring as Santa Claus comes out of the night, not in a wintry sleigh but an outrigger canoe pulled by eight strong sea turtles. Complete with a glossary of Hawaiian terms, this vividly illustrated celebration of Christmas Hawaiian-style is an enchanting journey to a lush tropical paradise just in time for the Holiday gift-giving and gift-guide season.
