Book Synopsis Almsgiving as the Essential Virtue by : Becky Walker
Download or read book Almsgiving as the Essential Virtue written by Becky Walker and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-11-13 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book seeks to add to common representations in the scholarship on almsgiving in late antiquity concerning the remission of post-baptismal sin, efforts to reform society, and competition between monks and bishops. It demonstrates that John Chrysostom conceptualized almsgiving as not only expiating the sins of the rich, relieving the suffering of the poor, or securing power for its promoters, but also expiating the sins of the poor, unifying the members of his congregation, and making humans like God. Although it could indeed save one from eternal death and physical hunger, it was salvific and transformative on other levels as well.

Book Synopsis Almsgiving in the Later Roman Empire by : Richard Finn OP
Download or read book Almsgiving in the Later Roman Empire written by Richard Finn OP and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2006-02-23 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Finn OP examines the significance of almsgiving in Churches of the later empire for the identity and status of the bishops, ascetics, and lay people who undertook practices which differed in kind and context from the almsgiving practised by pagans. It reveals how the almsgiving crucial in constructing the bishop's standing was a co-operative task where honour was shared but which exposed the bishop to criticism and rivalry. Finn details how practices gained meaning from a discourse which recast traditional virtues of generosity and justice to render almsgiving a benefaction and source of honour, and how this pattern of thought and conduct interacted with classical patterns to generate controversy. He argues that co-operation and competition in Christian almsgiving, together with the continued existence of traditional euergetism, meant that, contrary to the views of recent scholars, Christian alms did not turn bishops into the supreme patrons of their cities.

Book Synopsis Redemptive Almsgiving in Early Christianity by : Roman Garrison
Download or read book Redemptive Almsgiving in Early Christianity written by Roman Garrison and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-01-29 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the light of the New Testament's conviction that Jesus Christ died for sins, and that the Cross is a 'once for all' act that makes the Temple cult unnecessary, this challenging work probes the reasons for the emerging doctrine of redemptive almsgiving in early Christianity. Do the New Testament writers themselves (even Jesus!) implicitly endorse the view that a 'supplementary' or alternative means of atonement is necessary? What is the background of this theme in Graeco-Roman sources and in the Hebrew Bible? What are the principal texts in early Christian literature that advocate almsgiving as a 'ransom' for sin? These questions firmly govern this investigation of the social and theological forces that gave legitimacy to a doctrine that at first appears to contradict the primary New Testament soteriology, namely that the death of Jesus Christ is the exclusive means of redemption from sin.

Book Synopsis Our Deepest Desire: Prayer, Fasting & Almsgiving in the Writings of Augustine of Hippo by : Sister Susan SLG
Download or read book Our Deepest Desire: Prayer, Fasting & Almsgiving in the Writings of Augustine of Hippo written by Sister Susan SLG and published by SLG Press. This book was released on 2022-03-07 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fairacres Publication 193 This is a book about the practices of prayer, fasting and almsgiving as we meet them in the teaching of St Augustine of Hippo. He is generally acclaimed as someone who has had enormous influence on Christian theology and much has been written about him by scholars. However, apart from a number of translations of the Confessions, few of his writings are accessible to the ordinary reader, even though, as Bishop of Hippo, he constantly wrote and preached for his people. The first part of this book presents Augustine’s teaching on three central practices of Christian living—prayer, fasting and almsgiving—with reference to his sermons and his commentaries on the Psalms. The second part places it alongside some recent authors who demonstrate how this triad continues to be of value to Christians today. Although it has been conceived as a Lent book, this text provides a reflective introduction to these ways of Christian living in whatever season of the Church’s year a reader picks it up.
Book Synopsis Begging, Charity and Religion in Pre-famine Ireland by : Ciarán McCabe
Download or read book Begging, Charity and Religion in Pre-famine Ireland written by Ciarán McCabe and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beggars and begging were ubiquitous features of pre-Famine Irish society, yet have gone largely unexamined by historians. This book explores at length for the first time the complex cultures of mendicancy, as well as how wider societal perceptions of and responses to begging were framed by social class, gender and religion. The study breaks new ground in exploring the challenges inherent in defining and measuring begging and alms-giving in pre-Famine Ireland, as well as the disparate ways in which mendicants were perceived by contemporaries. A discussion of the evolving role of parish vestries in the life of pre-Famine communities facilitates an examination of corporate responses to beggary, while a comprehensive analysis of the mendicity society movement, which flourished throughout Ireland in the three decades following 1815, highlights the significance of charitable societies and associational culture in responding to the perceived threat of mendicancy. The instance of the mendicity societies illustrates the extent to which Irish commentators and social reformers were influenced by prevailing theories and practices in the transatlantic world regarding the management of the poor and deviant. Drawing on a wide range of sources previously unused for the study of poverty and welfare, this book makes an important contribution to modern Irish social and ecclesiastical history. An Open Access edition of this work is available on the OAPEN Library.
