This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2001. The 1980s and 1990s were not only a period in which many developing countries adopted a series of major economic policy reforms, but also an era in which all socialist countries undertook varying degrees of radical reforms in their Soviet-style central-planning economic management systems. This volume examines the performance of China's industrial reform and open-door policy during the period of 1980-1997 through conducting a case study on one of its Special Economic Zones (SEZs), Xiamen. It adopts an analytical approach - examining Xiamen's performance from the perspective of three important interactions: between the country's general economic reform policies and the Special Policy implemented in the SEZs; between the Xiamen SEZ and the vast Chinese hinterland; and between foreign (especially Taiwanese) direct investment and local industrial transformation.

Book Synopsis China's Economic Challenge: Unconventional Success by : Albert Keidel
Download or read book China's Economic Challenge: Unconventional Success written by Albert Keidel and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2022-03-23 with total page 475 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes economic strategies responsible for China's 40 years of 40-fold growth, suggesting how such strategies might be applied elsewhere. It combines a seven-chapter chronological analysis of China's growth with three additional chapters on the government's leadership role, success in poverty reduction, and China's combined international finance and trade experience. The book recaps why China's success challenges the United States and the field of development economics. One of its emphases, the 1980s, reports how generous rural price and land-tenure reforms caused a rural income boom that threatened urban subsidized livelihoods and underpinned consequent violence. It describes how China will likely face a similar challenge moving forward, during the planned merger of rural and urban workforces. The book includes an analysis of the US-China trade war and China's economic prospects in the wake of COVID-19. It is a clear and timely account for anyone interested in understanding the institutions and policies responsible for China's successful development and its likely continuation.

The zones appear to be a new form of socioeconomic organization that is neither rural nor urban, but preserves essential ingredients of each.
Book Synopsis China's Unfinished Economic Revolution by : Nicholas R. Lardy
Download or read book China's Unfinished Economic Revolution written by Nicholas R. Lardy and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 1998-07-01 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China's Unfinished Economic Revolution offers a fundamentally different interpretation of China's economic reform. The common view that China's gradualistic approach has served it well overlooks the fact that state-owned banks for the last two decades have channeled a large share of sharply rising household savings into what are mostly unreformed, money-losing companies. The result is that several of China's largest financial institutions now are insolvent. To avoid a major domestic banking crisis the book argues that China must recapitalize and restructure its domestic banking system and end the long-standing practice of making lending decisions based on political rather than economic criteria. Nicholas Lardy explains that this course will inevitably be costly in political terms, in part because it will lead for a time to a slower rate of economic growth. But the alternative is even less attractive—permanently slower growth, continued macroeconomic instability, an inability to meet the expectations of the international community for the opening of its domestic financial markets, and insufficient resources to deal with severe environmental deterioration, growing water shortages, and a rapidly aging population. This timely book also analyzes the new reform initiatives China has launched in the wake of the Asian financial crisis, suggests additional steps that must be taken, and evaluates the implications for U.S. policy.
Book Synopsis The Gradual Revolution by : Hui Wang
Download or read book The Gradual Revolution written by Hui Wang and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Uprising at Tiananmen Square may have been crushed politically, but it has had extraordinary consequences in opening up China to new varieties of economic experimentation. Nowhere has this fusion of political repression and economic opportunity been better captured than in Hui Wang's masterful study. And given the world wide and historic importance of China, this volume deserves most careful consideration. Given his unique background as a former assistant director of the China National Economic Reform Institute (CNERI) hi Beijing, and before that, a board member of "The Economic Daily "in the capital city of China, he is able to provide the sort of first hand account that deeply enriches this fundamental treatise on the transformation of the Chinese economy from a centrally planned to a market system. This book should prove to be especially timely as American investors and businessmen are pouring into China for new commercial ventures; while scholars are likewise coming to China in order to obtain information and experience to benefit other struggling formerly socialist economies. Wang makes no claim that present-day China is necessarily a model for the rest of Asia or Eastern Europe, but he does make plain that variations on the theme of a free market and a controlled polity are as much part of "Leftist" as well as "Rightist" regimes. As a result, this book should have appeal quite beyond undergraduate and graduate courses in modern China, and should extend to those political scientists and sociologists who take seriously fundamental themes of development.
