Book excerpt: It is the story of a young girl, Allie, who is on vacation in Florida. She falls into the Myakka river and is called upon to save seven worlds, each with different types of animal/fish/crab inhabitants. Each world Allie visits has its own drama, and has names, personalities, and symbolism with a mythological and historical basis. A catfish named Holt and an alligator named Ginott help guide Allie on her quest to save the seven worlds.A year earlier, Allie had seen an angry princess named Varuna wrongly accused of stealing by her mother, Queen Aditi. Varuna vowed revenge and was courted with promises by an evil being named Grahi. Together, they set the seven worlds into chaos, the seven worlds Allie must save.Come with Allie and meet the underwater world of the Myakka River.1.) Vacation Chapter 1 sets the stage for the story. Allie is an average girl with an average family on an average vacation. It is normal mix of fun and adult stuff, but lacking in adventure. Allie escapes a dinner party and goes to play out at the dock by the Myakka river. While playing, she falls into the water and finds herself in a new world. A catfish named Holt and an alligator named Ginott explain to her that they need her help, and that a bad fish named Grahi is trying to take over by manipulating Princess Varuna. She says she will help and is introduced to her team which includes a gar named Kaveri and three wood storks named Frank, Flipflop and Slippery Pete.2.) The World of Disregard Chapter 2 takes Allie to the first kingdom she is to save. It is called Deva and the inhabitants are water bugs. It is located near El Jobean pier amid tall sea grass. The kingdom is ruled by King Indra and Queen Indrani, and Allie must go there and help find their Ahimsa Stone. In the process, she does battle with the dreaded preta.3.) The World of For Your Own Good Chapter 3 is filled with painted turtles living near the Myakka State Forest. They live in the Kingdom of Pedagogy and their King Solomon likes the symbol of two crossed rods. Allie must find the Proverbs Stone and do battle with an evil crepehanger.4.) The World of Cosmic Unfairness Chapter 4 has the Kingdom of Esau and mangrove snapper. It is located in the upper Myakka near snook haven and is ruled by Queen Equitas. Allie must find the Filicoid Stone and bring fairness back to the kingdom. She battles a monster Gaki and zombie snapper.5.) The World of Cosmic Fairness Chapter 5 is the Kingdom of Galt. The inhabitants are oysters and it takes place near the Cape Haze Aquatic Preserve. King Rearden has become too fair and it is killing the kingdom. Allie must find the Praxeology Stone and take on destroyer bhoots.6.) The World of Guilt Chapter 6 is about mud snakes and their sacrifices. The Kingdom of Argos is near Hog Island and the leader is Queen Electra. The Scrupulum Stone is missing and Allie goes against cadaver-like jikininkis7.) The World of Lies Chapter 7 takes Allie to the edge of the ocean near the Boca Grande Causeway and Bird Key. She must help the stingrays in the Kingdom of Nyx. King Erebos is a fairly good king, but lies are everywhere and the Obloquy Stone is missing. Allie channels Palla Athena and takes on the sea goddess, Thetis.8.) The World of Reflection Chapter 8 locates Allie in Tippecanoe Bay near Ghost Point. The Kingdom of Onomatopoeia is in peril and the stonecrabs can't see their own good. Queen Lariope is aware that the Speculum Stone is gone and she has taken its place as the source of reflection. Allie battles her own mind and her view of herself.9.) The Trial of Aditi Varuna needs legitimacy and Grahi is determined to provide it with a trail of Queen Aditi, as well as Allie.10.) New Flipflops In the final chapter, Allie returns home with a new knowledge, and enhanced life and confidence.

Book excerpt: Don't miss the JOE PICKETT series—now streaming on Paramount+ The first novel in the thrilling series featuring Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett from #1 New York Times bestselling author C. J. Box. Joe Pickett is the new game warden in Twelve Sleep, Wyoming, a town where nearly everyone hunts and the game warden—especially one like Joe who won't take bribes or look the other way—is far from popular. When he finds a local hunting outfitter dead, splayed out on the woodpile behind his state-owned home, he takes it personally. There had to be a reason that the outfitter, with whom he's had run-ins before, chose his backyard, his woodpile to die in. Even after the "outfitter murders," as they have been dubbed by the local press after the discovery of the two more bodies, are solved, Joe continues to investigate, uneasy with the easy explanation offered by the local police. As Joe digs deeper into the murders, he soon discovers that the outfitter brought more than death to his backdoor: he brought Joe an endangered species, thought to be extinct, which is now living in his woodpile. But if word of the existence of this endangered species gets out, it will destroy any chance of InterWest, a multi-national natural gas company, building an oil pipeline that would bring the company billions of dollars across Wyoming, through the mountains and forests of Twelve Sleep. The closer Joe comes to the truth behind the outfitter murders, the endangered species and InterWest, the closer he comes to losing everything he holds dear.

Book excerpt: PULITZER PRIZE WINNER • NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The “remarkable” (Ken Burns), “utterly absorbing” (Forbes) Civil War classic that inspired the film Gettysburg, with more than three million copies in print “My favorite historical novel . . . a superb re-creation of the Battle of Gettysburg, but its real importance is its insight into what the war was about, and what it meant.”—James M. McPherson In the four most bloody and courageous days of our nation’s history, two armies fought for two conflicting dreams. One dreamed of freedom, the other of a way of life. Far more than rifles and bullets were carried into battle. There were memories. There were promises. There was love. And far more than men fell on those Pennsylvania fields. Bright futures, untested innocence, and pristine beauty were also the casualties of war. Michael Shaara’s Pulitzer Prize–winning masterpiece is unique, sweeping, unforgettable—the dramatic story of the battleground for America’s destiny.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The renowned poet and author of The Handmaid's Tale "brings a swift, powerful energy" to this "intimate and immediate" poetry collection (Publishers Weekly). These beautifully crafted poems -- by turns dark, playful, intensely moving, tender, and intimate -- make up Margaret Atwood's most accomplished and versatile gathering to date, setting foot on the middle ground / between body and word. Some draw on history, some on myth, both classical and popular. Others, more personal, concern themselves with love, with the fragility of the natural world, and with death, especially in the elegiac series of meditations on the death of a parent. But they also inhabit a contemporary landscape haunted by images of the past. Generous, searing, compassionate, and disturbing, this poetry rises out of human experience to seek a level between luminous memory and the realities of the everyday, between the capacity to inflict and the strength to forgive.

Book excerpt: A small-town kidnapping presents a major problem for Commissario Trotti—and draws us into CWA Award winner Timothy Williams' debut, set against the rich backdrop of a provincial Italian city. Northern Italy, 1978: Commissario Piero Trotti, trusted senior police investigator in an anonymous provincial city off the River Po, has two difficult cases to solve. A dismembered body has been found in the river, and it’s up to Trotti to figure out who the murder victim is. At the same time, an estranged friend approaches Trotti with a desperate personal plea: his six-year-old daughter—Trotti’s own goddaughter—has been kidnapped. In the wake of the high-profile kidnapping of Aldo Moro, president of Italy’s majority party, faith in law enforcement is at an all-time low, and it’s no surprise the distraught father isn’t willing to take this matter to the police. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inner workings of a writer’s life, the interplay between experience and writing, are brilliantly recounted by a master of the art. Gay Talese now focuses on his own life—the zeal for the truth, the narrative edge, the sometimes startling precision, that won accolades for his journalism and best-sellerdom and acclaim for his revelatory books about The New York Times (The Kingdom and the Power), the Mafia (Honor Thy Father), the sex industry (Thy Neighbor’s Wife), and, focusing on his own family, the American immigrant experience (Unto the Sons). How has Talese found his subjects? What has stimulated, blocked, or inspired his writing? Here are his amateur beginnings on his college newspaper; his professional climb at The New York Times; his desire to write on a larger canvas, which led him to magazine writing at Esquire and then to books. We see his involvement with issues of race from his student days in the Deep South to a recent interracial wedding in Selma, Alabama, where he once covered the fierce struggle for civil rights. Here are his reflections on the changing American sexual mores he has written about over the last fifty years, and a striking look at the lives—and their meaning—of Lorena and John Bobbitt. He takes us behind the scenes of his legendary profile of Frank Sinatra, his writings about Joe DiMaggio and heavyweight champion Floyd Patterson, and his interview with the head of a Mafia family. But he is at his most poignant in talking about the ordinary men and women whose stories led to his most memorable work. In remarkable fashion, he traces the history of a single restaurant location in New York, creating an ethnic mosaic of one restaurateur after the other whose dreams were dashed while a successor’s were born. And as he delves into the life of a young female Chinese soccer player, we see his consuming interest in the world in its latest manifestation. In these and other recollections and stories, Talese gives us a fascinating picture of both the serendipity and meticulousness involved in getting a story. He makes clear that every one of us represents a good one, if a writer has the curiosity to know it, the diligence to pursue it, and the desire to get it right.Candid, humorous, deeply impassioned—a dazzling book about the nature of writing in one man’s life, and of writing itself.

Book excerpt: This collection started as a whisper, a quiet mouth asking questions. Over the years it became a coherent voice that kept getting louder. Now it is a song, sprung from a yearning to fill in the missing parts, to understand my mother's story. Perhaps it's something that goes beyond what is experiential and real and moves into memory and imagination. Perhaps it is a book of magic, of synchronicity and colliding moments in time, too strange to be logical, too concise to be chance. Ultimately, it's a way of shedding light, in order to change the direction of a past. Sometimes, I think it has been formed by my imagined daughter, clearing the way ahead before her own birth. Or by whole generations of women, celebrating a future, formed from the heart of us.
