Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multiple sclerosis is the most common debilitating neurological disease in people under the age of forty in the developed world. Many publications cover medical and clinical approaches to the disease; however, The Biology of Multiple Sclerosis provides a clear and concise up-to-date overview of the scientific literature on the various theories of MS pathogenesis. Covering the main elements of scientific research into multiple sclerosis, the book contains chapters on the neuropathology of the disease as well as an account of the most extensively used animal model experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis. The book contains chapters regarding the role of viruses in the development of multiple sclerosis. Viruses have long been implicated and chapters on animal models based on virus infection, as well as their possible role in the etiology of MS, are included. Of interest to MS researchers, the book is written to also be of value to postgraduate and medical students.

Book excerpt: Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an enigmatic immune mediated disease of the central nervous system that affects about 350,000 individuals in the US, and many more around the world. The mechanism of this disease is largely unknown and there is no cure for it. However, there are several well-characterized experimental animal models that help us understand and speculate about potential mechanisms of pathology in this disease. Many of the experimental therapies designed for this disease rely on testing the drugs in animal models before using it in clinical trials. This book combines for the first time the different experimental models for MS (including immune-mediated and viral) under one roof, and highlights aspects that are different or shared among these experimental models. It’s aim is to improve our understanding of this devastating disease and help us think about potential additional therapies for it.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For several decades the unsolved etiogenetic and therapeutic problems of multiple sclerosis have offered the strongest challenge to research in neu rology. The hope of decisive theoretical and practical progress increased when an experimental model presenting far-reaching conformity of structural and pathogenetic features was developed, namely chronic re lapsing experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (CREAE). During the past years, Dr. Lassmann has contributed substantially to the adaptation of this model with the aim of comprehensive evaluation, thoroughly fol lowing up his own ideas in numerous studies of individual aspects. The new possibility of continuous and detailed investigation of the clinical, morphological and immunological characteristics of temporal phase sequence of autoimmune demyelination has led to many new findings, corrections offormer hypotheses, and, from correlated studies of human multiple sclerosis, a series of important data concerning, for example, early manifestations of demyelination, the range of so-called acute mul tiple sclerosis and the incidence of remyelination. Moreover, Dr. Lass mann has analysed several special problems which became definable in the course of his own studies or in collaboration with other groups, in cluding the initial distribution of demyelinated foci, the cerebrospinal fluid phenomena and immunological findings in the nervous tissue. The results of these separate studies also led to a deeper understanding of demyelinating processes. This monograph integrates these studies and summarizes their re sults.

Book excerpt: Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis - Models, Disease Biology and Experimental Therapy is totally focused on the model of multiple sclerosis, experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE). The book chapters give a very good and in depth overview about the currently existing and most used EAE models. In addition, chapters dealing with novel experimental therapeutic approaches demonstrate the usefulness of the EAE model for MS research. With an international perspective, this book features contributions from authors throughout the world, Australia, Germany, Japan, Spain, Taiwan, and USA. There is an impressive international Faculty that provides insight into current research themes. This further demonstrates the importance of EAE in research all over the world. The book will provide established researchers and students with novel insights and guidance for their research and will help to push the field forward.

Book excerpt: Because autoimmune disorders can wreak havoc in both humans and animals, these disorders are now the objects of intense and focused research. This book details specific animal models for a variety of autoimmune disorders. The contributors are recognized authorities who deal with the panoply of experimentally induced autoimmune disorders, including encephalomyelitis, allergic neuritis, uveoretinitis, myocarditis, and hepatitis. Also included are discussions of spontaneously appearing diseases such as autoimmune thyroiditis and systemic lupus erythematosus. Many other disorders are also covered in this comprehensive guide. Certain to be an aid in the planning of individual experiments and broader research programs, this book will be a valuable addition to the library of all practicing immunologists interested in immune system function and dysfunction.
