Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Calvary is a largely autobiographical novel, in which Mirbeau romanticizes his devastating affair with a woman of dubious morals, Judith Vinmer, who appears as "Juliette Roux" in the novel. The story is narrated in the first person by the main character, the antihero Jean Mintie, who has literary ambition and the potential to become a good writer, is incapable of overcoming his sexual obsessions. Victimized by a woman and reduced to a state of humiliated impotence, he tries to transform his suffering into an impulse to create. His redemptive passion is modeled on the Passion of Christ! Excerpt: "I was born one evening in October at Saint-Michel-les-Hêtres, a small town in the department of Orne, and I was immediately christened by the name of Jean-François-Marie-Mintié. To celebrate in a fitting manner my coming into this world, my godfather, who was my uncle, distributed a lot of dainties, threw many coppers and other small coins to a crowd of country boys gathered on the church steps. One of them, while struggling with his comrades, fell so awkwardly on the sharp edge of a stone that he broke his neck and died the following day. As for my uncle, when he returned home he contracted typhoid fever and passed away a few weeks later. My governess, old Marie, often related these incidents to me with pride and admiration."

Book excerpt: When David Stevens, engineer on freight No. 5, snatched Hilda Lessing from the path of a fast express, he did not know that there was the making of a heroine in her slender frame, nor that fate was to entangle this simple child with himself in a web of plots and danger, from which she was to rescue them at the risk of her life. But some of the most breath-taking adventures of all fiction lie between the consummation of her happiness and the foiling of a diabolical plot threatening the safety of the nation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natalie and Chris are a young and happy couple who thought that life of joy is upon them. Sudden outbreak of the Great Depression ruins their plans... In the time of despair Natalie's faith and Chris' dedication will push them trough and prove that with pure love all adversity can be overcome. Grace Livingston Hill was an early 20th-century novelist and wrote both under her real name and the pseudonym Marcia Macdonald. She wrote over 100 novels and numerous short stories and her characters are most often young female Christian women or those who become so within the confines of the story. Hill's messages are simple in nature: good versus evil. As Hill believed that the Bible was very clear about what was good and evil in life and had firm faith God's ability to restore everything, the same belief was also reflected in her own works. Even today Hill's novels are widely read and appreciated for their romance and their inspiring life lessons.

Book excerpt: Anna Sewell, (born March 30, 1820, Yarmouth, Norfolk, England-died April 25, 1878, Old Catton, Norfolk), a British author of the children's classic Black Beauty. Sewell's concern for the humane treatment of horses began early in life when she spent many hours driving her father to and from the station from which he left for work. She was crippled at a young age, and though she had difficulty walking, she could drive a horse-drawn carriage. Later, after reading an essay on animals by Horace Bushnell, she stated that one of her goals in writing was "to induce kindness, sympathy, and an understanding treatment of horses." Sewell's introduction to writing began in her youth when she helped edit the works of her mother-a deeply religious, popular author of juvenile best-sellers. Sewell spent the last seven or eight years of her life-confined to her house as an invalid-writing Black Beauty. The book, a fictional autobiography of a gentle highbred horse, had a strong moral purpose and is said to have been instrumental in abolishing the cruel practice of using the checkrein. Black Beauty, in full Black Beauty: The Autobiography of a Horse, is the only novel by Anna Sewell and the first major animal story in children's literature. The author wrote it "to induce kindness, sympathy, and an understanding treatment of horses"; it was published in 1877, shortly before Sewell's death. Black Beauty, a handsome well-born, well-bred horse of the era before automobiles, narrates the story. He is initially owned by kind masters but is sold to successively crueler owners. Eventually, he collapses from overwork and ill-treatment, but in the end, he is sold to another kind of owner and recovers. Beauty is an ideal horse-obedient, willing, intelligent, and courageous. Sewell's careful observation and extensive descriptions of equine behaviour lend verisimilitude to the novel.
