Book excerpt: As the wife of an American businessman, the author spent the better part of the 1970's in Iran where she witnessed the boom of the Shah's development and great vision for Iran to be recognized internationally in every field; it was to be Iran's Great Civilization. Mohamed Reza Pahlavi followed his father Reza Shah's vision to make Iran the leading power in the Middle East. He wanted his country once again to become as powerful as the Great Persian Empire of the past. He believed that by developing industry, education, economics, and the military, his dream could come to fruition. He was also a sportsman and realized that his people needed leisure time, and so he encouraged and supported sports activities. The Iran of the 60's and 70's was a country with the most beautiful snow skiing in the world; it had a world-renowned soccer program; there were country clubs and civic parks with golf courses, tennis courts, swimming pools, and just about every activity anyone might want. The Shah's true love, however, was horses. Perhaps as a result, he promoted and supported all types of equestrian activities. An invitation to work for the Imperial Court as his horse trainer enabled the author to see many of the royal family in informal moments; it also gave her an entree into high society, and this enabled her to observe the upper class of Iranians at play. Many of the generals and court officials spent much time in Tehran and the coastal resorts junketing and enjoying many different sports, indulging themselves to the fullest. This is a book of stories and anecdotes about her life there during the "Golden Years" of the reign of Mohammed Reza, Shahanshah Aryamehr. There were times of joy, fun, stress, accomplishment and sadness during her time in that beautiful Middle Eastern country. You will enjoy the ride!"

Much has been said of the failure of the American officials to see what was coming in Iran soon enough to begin corrective action however, I don't think much could have been done to stop the Revolution. Iran now, with its youthful population, that had no part in the Islamic movement, is begging to become an accepted part of the International system."

Book excerpt: With a thrilling narrative that sheds much light on recent events, this national bestseller brings to life the 1953 CIA coup in Iran that ousted the country’s elected prime minister, ushered in a quarter-century of brutal rule under the Shah, and stimulated the rise of Islamic fundamentalism and anti-Americanism in the Middle East. Selected as one of the best books of the year by the Washington Post and The Economist, it now features a new preface by the author on the folly of attacking Iran.

Book excerpt: Shah Abbas (1571-1629) was shah of Iran from 1588 (when he assumed power by deposing his father, whom he later murdered) until his death in 1629. He is of critical importance in the history of Iran, restoring the power of the Safavids through war and the strategic negotiation of peace. He is still acclaimed for his strong and decisive rule and the architectural achievements of his reign although he is also recognised as a tyrant, whose paranoia (probably justified) caused him to imprison and assassinate many of his own relatives including his own son, ultimately leaving the throne to his grandson.Remarkably, this is the first biography of Shah Abbas in English. "On a Persian Throne" combines rigorous scholarship with a popular style to produce the definitive, accessible and objective biography of this seminal figure in Iranian history.

Book excerpt: People are curious about how life in Iran today, under the Islamic republic, differs from life as it was during the reign of Shah Mohamad Reza Pahlavi. Gail Rose Thompson, who lived there in the 1970s, working for the imperial court as the Shah’s horse trainer, has many tales about life during that time and also about the way of life in the country postrevolution. She visited Iran in 2017 after an absence of forty years, the first ex-employee of the Shah to return. She paints a picture of a beautiful historic country that dates from the fourth millennium BCE, when the Persian Empire was the most powerful kingdom in the ancient world. Iranians are proud of their heritage—being polite, hospitable, and extremely family oriented. Iran from Crown to Turbans is a fascinating book of stories that will enlighten the reader about a country that has been misrepresented.

Book excerpt: Nadir shahs name went down in history also as a great reformer of religion. It is knotwo parts; in the West the Turks of Azerbaijan were far from the Turks of the Ottomans who believed in the faith of Sunnite Henefi of Islam, in the east from the Turks of the Middle Asia. Afterwards, Shah Ismayils religious reforms gave a chance to the Persian nationalists to seize the power. wn from the history that the Safavids had come to the power by preferring the ideology of Shiite. As soon as Shah Ismayil came to the power, came to the throne in Tabriz, he carried out a religious reform, and obliged the population of the provinces of Azerbaijan and Persian to adopt Shiite. Though he the big ruinous wars lasted for ten years; The cunning power centers of that time could use properly the chance of the difference of faith between the brotherly countries. He abolished Alevilik which was adopted by the dynasty of Safavids as an official religious faith, and made the faith of Jafari official. During his time Azerbaijan restored itshad established a big state, the religious reform carried out by him, divided the Turkish world into The discrimination of faith made the Turks of both Azerbaijan and Turkey, be face to face, and caused to former might again, and in the world it became the second mighty state after the state of Ottomans. But it didnt last much. In 1747, Nadir shah was assassinated by the captain of unfortunate Motherland and the historical facts. This history has been living in the heart of any Azerbaijani and throws light on its future. Up to Yunus Oghuzs this novel, there were written different works about Nadir shah. But except Yunus Oghuzs novel, in none of those works Nadir shah didnt unite the historical lands of the country, or didnt reinstate the old Turkish traditions, and at last as a connective, and reformer. Up this time, especially, during the Soviet period, the real heroes of Azerbaijan were forgotten, they were disgraced underhis guard at the age of sixty-one. It was the beginning of the fall of the empire of Azerbaijan which could be able to last till 1925. The novel of Nadir shah by Yunus Oguz reflects wholly one part of the glorious history of our different brands, the personalities who put the foundation of the division by the policy pursued by them, were shown to the people as heroes. The name of Nadir shah Avshar was given in all the Oghuz, Nadir shah isnt valued as an inexperienced ruler who didnt know what the diplomacy was, like in the works written in the former times. On the contrary, in the novel it is clearly seen that Nadir shah understood the tricky policy of the neighboring states for to make Azerbaijan and Turkey become face to face, and he didnt agree with them. In the work it has been given a broad place to Nadir shahs religious reforms. It is true, Nadir shah wasnt able to carry out till the end all those reforms, his policy of to put an end to the discrimination of faith, to unite all the Turkish world. Yunus Oghuz shows that Nadir shah wanted to put an end the difference of Shiite-Sunnite in the wholly Islam. But the conservative scientists, confessors, and the political circles that set up their power basing on the difference of faith, put up resistance to his plans. In the work, the death of the great Azerbaijani ruler has been written in an interesting form. The investigations of the last period show that the Russian intelligeliterature as a blood-sucker Iranian shah and the cruel ruler. Firstly, in the historical novel of Nadir shah written by the writer and publicist Yunus Oghuz, this mighty Azerbaijani ruler is characterized as a great statesman who lovepower after a half century after Nadir shah, were killed by the way of terror for they laid obstacles the Russians plans. It is natural, all these d his motherland, who wished the integrity of Azerbaijan and Turkish world, as a builder o

Book excerpt: The Music of Central Asia surveys the rich and diverse musical life of a region that was once at the center of the trans-Eurasian Silk Road trade and that has now reemerged as a crucial arena of global geopolitics. This beautiful and informative volume offers a resource for Central Asians to learn about the musical heritage of their region and a detailed introduction to this heritage for readers and listeners worldwide. The Music of Central Asia balances "insider" and "outsider" perspectives with contributions by 27 authors from 14 countries. A companion website provides access to some 175 audio and video examples, listening guides and study questions, and transliterations and translations of the performed texts. The generously illustrated text is supplemented with boxes and side bars, musician profiles, and an illustrated glossary of musical instruments. The Music of Central Asia targets a broad, non-specialist readership, while specialists will find it an indispensable resource. The book is divided into four parts: an overview of the region's music and musical instruments; sections on "The Nomadic World" and "The World of Sedentary-Dwellers," which explore music and musical life in the context of Central Asia's two great axes of civilization; and "Central Asia in the Age of Globalization," whose focus is the future of the past, or how musical heritage is being revitalized and reimagined in the contested cultural landscape of contemporary Central Asia. The Music of Central Asia can be read systematically to build comprehensive knowledge about interlinked topics—or used as a handy reference on specific musical styles, repertoires, and traditions. For instructors, the book's 35 chapters offer ample material for a semester-long course, while groups of chapters can serve as a module in courses devoted to broader topics in music, history, and culture.
