Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From his very first poem in 1990, D. Alexander Holiday has engaged in an intense form of poetry that might be called Reality Writing. He has dealt with issues both personal (the abandonment and loss of never knowing his own parents), and universal (racism, genocide, imperialism). Now he returns with more poignant poems in which he continues a tradition he began long ago: putting people on trial in the public arena. In this case, the defendants include those who have united against him to prevent him from gaining custody of the granddaughter he was never informed he had – until the death of his own daughter, the little girl’s mother. Together with assorted letters and documents, this body of work tells the often horrifying story of Mr. Holiday’s run-ins with the human race: with the abusive and sadistic foster parents with whom he spent his first 18 years of life, having been abandoned by his mother and father (“Somehow Mama Knew”); with his daughter’s mother (“Ashes to Ashes,” “All the Killers Gathered”); and with co-workers (“Please Tell Massuh,” “How I Am Perceived”). But they also offer a few moments of gentle respite in the form of salutes to comedians whose work got him through the worst of times (“Stop Laughing at Me” and “Final Curtain”). As you read these poems, you will gradually learn of the insidious pattern of betrayal and deceit to which Mr. Holiday has been subjected to since his daughter’s mother packed up their child and moved her back down to New York City when she was still an infant. You will learn why he had no contact with his daughter, whom he loved deeply, for over 10 years – until he learned of her death in a most bizarre manner. And as you read of his conflicts with the human race - the years spent in abusive foster homes, repeated betrayals at the hands of family members, acquaintances, and others - you will marvel at the amazing story of a man who faced utter abandonment and turned to reading and writing instead of drugs, alcohol, or even more destructive forms of catharsis and escape which he might have (understandably) chosen.

Book excerpt: “Relentlessly paced . . . As usual, McCammon dazzles the reader with gritty historical detail, vivid local color, and a cast of memorable grotesques.” —Publishers Weekly The year is 1703. The woman Matthew Corbett loves is rapidly deteriorating. A drug forced on her by criminal mastermind Professor Fell has destroyed her sanity. And the one thing that could save her—a book of potions—was stolen during an assault on the English village where she has been living under another name, an attack directed by a deranged man known as Cardinal Black. Matthew is a professional problem solver employed by an agency in New York, but this case is personal. To save Berry Grigsby, Matthew will journey to London with one of Fell’s henchmen and attend an auction to which Black has summoned unsavory characters from near and far—all vying to possess the powerful volume. But before Matthew can obtain the book and heal Berry, he must survive Cardinal Black . . . The “most intense yet” in the unique series that began with Speaks the Nightbird, Cardinal Black is a brutal and brilliant historical thriller from this New York Times–bestselling and Bram Stoker Award–winning author (The Florida Times-Union). Praise for the Matthew Corbett Novels “Excellent . . . full of tension and suspense.” —Stephen King on Speaks the Nightbird “Told with matchless insight into the human soul . . . deeply satisfying.” —Sandra Brown on Speaks the Nightbird “The Corbett novels are rich, atmospheric stories, the kind of historical mystery that makes the reader feel as though he really has stepped back in time. Matthew is a very well designed character, very much a man of his time but also ahead of his time, as though he has stepped out of a modern-day crime lab into the early eighteenth century.” —Booklist

Some of our monsters appear to us as our parents or other guardians or adults and some are other siblings and strangers. These monsters can be quite real, they can be touched, seen, and heard. They haunt us during the day and they come to bed with us when we are ready to go to sleep. Some of these monsters are created for us by television, magazines, and comic books, monsters like the Alien creature that was always after Sigourney Weavers character Ripley, or the things in the cavernous hell-like holes in The Descent (1 and 2) movies. Monsters, whether they be the Power Ranger variety or some creature out of a really good horror novel or movie, comic or the heart pulsing kind, and either human or imaginary, these creatures leave their scars behindif you can survive their brutality. Mr. Holiday would like you to turn the pages and meet a few of his monstersone in particular being.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heritage from Father is a poignant testimony on the suffering from discrimination and the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. It is also a testimony of love, compassion and healing after the authors parents, six brothers and sisters were killed in the genocide. In this testimony, the author highlights his awareness of Gods blessings upon him through people from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds. It is evidence that the awareness reminds him of the values of gratitude and faith instilled by his father from early age. The very values that had healed his father during the persecutions of the Tutsi in the years that preceded the horror of the 1994 genocide. Heritage from Father is also an account of how the saving hand of remembrance kept away from him the pressing need for hatred that had started to overrun him, and how it urged him to life in peace instead, with himself and with the world. This is particularly true in his personal style of forgiving the executioners of his family and relatives, in spite of their refusal to own responsibility.

Having seen her home and library bombed, she invokes in her poems the icons and myths of a troubled people caught between the two dominant religions of Europe. The first English-language collection by one of Bosnia's most promising young poets shows us how when the world is narrowed by guns, one's field of reference widens so much that "everything hurts."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In three previous books, through a selection of prose poems, the author shared bits and pieces of a life, one comprised of complete abandonment by a mother and the disconnected roles played by extended family members, a life that eventually led to being placed in foster care. Now, for the first time, with In the Care of Strangers, he tells the entire story of what such a life was actually like. In this five-part memoir, dependent on the seven deadly sins, the author tries to reconstruct a painful journey of coming of age under the literal care of strangers and the individuals that made up the foster homes and hospitals that would help to shape a young man’s life, certainly a difficult life, riddled with abuse from the start (Malice) and ending with greed and envy in a fourth and final home. He finds and develops pride in himself while recuperating from a paralysis. How this young man attempts to survive the experiences of foster care while also having to contend with a disability, and still managing to try to simply achieve graduation from high school, with a goal toward college, is a testament to a human spirit beyond measure. This riveting story, told through an innocent, almost childlike voice of a boy shocked into care, then as an older man who has come to terms with his situation (The Unclaimed), and finally through the poetry, should be taken as an inspiration for many.

Much of the music discussed in Gathering Of The Tribe deals with the special power of sound and tone. Frank Zappa may have said that ‘writing about music is like dancing about architecture,’ but this book explains how music can - or for a moment believed it could - move mountains. It is a matter of record that over the centuries composers and musicians have been consistently inspired by the occult. Few music lovers can fail to have been intrigued by the rumours of magick and mysticism that surround many of their favourite albums. In chapters that cover the different musical styles, from jazz through folk, rock, pop, noise and experimental forms, Gathering Of The Tribe sketches a fascinating overview of this provocative and enduring relationship with heavy conscious creation, offering en route a guide to the ultimate occult record collection, ranging from the Beatles to the Stones, Led Zeppelin to Nick Cave, Captain Beefheart to the Wu Tang Clan, Debussy to Throbbing Gristle, Charles Manson, Barbara the Gray Witch, Coven and more.

In the Temple of Anubis, negotiations are taking place between Hatusu and the defeated King Tushratta of Mitanni for a peace treaty that will seal her greatest victory. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether it be Jack the Ripper in nineteenth-century England or Ted Bundy in 1970s America, the public has always been fascinated by the criminal offender type known as the serial killer. Professionals continue to speculate and develop new theories about their identity decades after their crimes ended. But what is it that causes such evilness in individuals that causes them to take an innocent life, not once but multiples times, and for no apparent reason beyond their own perverse psychological gratification? This fascinating book explores this question by looking at the psychosocial determinants of criminal behavior, including serial murder. The role of such internal processes as attachment, moral development, and identity formation in the development of a person’s predisposition to various forms of deviance, including physical and sexual aggression, is reviewed. This information is then applied to actual serial killers, including David Berkowitz (The Son of Sam), Charles Manson, Eric Rudolph (God’s Crusader), Ted Bundy (The Face of Evil), Edmund Kemper (The Co-ed Killer), and the Zodiac Killer, in an effort to construct a psychosocial profile of each and to attempt to pinpoint the various developmental factors that contributed to their eventual criminality. Finally, early intervention strategies are explored that can potentially redirect a child’s developmental trajectory away from crime and deviance, and toward a more adaptive and socially acceptable behavioral repertoire. This book will be an insightful resource to all law enforcement professionals, policymakers, police academics, psychologists, psychiatrists, and many others in the helping professions as well.

Book excerpt: Scott Oden's epic novel A Gathering of Ravens is "satisfying...complex...and a pleasure to read" (Publishers Weekly, starred review). To the Danes, he is skraelingr; to the English, he is orcnéas; to the Irish, he is fomoraig. He is Corpse-maker and Life-quencher, the Bringer of Night, the Son of the Wolf and Brother of the Serpent. He is Grimnir, and he is the last of his kind—the last in a long line of monsters who have plagued humanity since the Elder Days. Drawn from his lair by a thirst for vengeance against the Dane who slew his brother, Grimnir emerges into a world that’s changed. A new faith has arisen. The Old Ways are dying, and their followers retreating into the shadows; even still, Grimnir’s vengeance cannot be denied. Taking a young Christian hostage to be his guide, Grimnir embarks on a journey that takes him from the hinterlands of Denmark, where the wisdom of the ancient dwarves has given way to madness, to the war-torn heart of southern England, where the spirits of the land make violence on one another. And thence to the green shores of Ireland and the Viking stronghold of Dubhlinn, where his enemy awaits. But, unless Grimnir can set aside his hatreds, his dream of retribution will come to nothing. For Dubhlinn is set to be the site of a reckoning—the Old Ways versus the New—and Grimnir, the last of his kind left to plague mankind, must choose: stand with the Christian King of Ireland and see his vengeance done or stand against him and see it slip away? Scott Oden's A Gathering of Ravens is a novel of vengeance, faith, and the power of myth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains Chesterton's commentaries and reflections on what he saw on his travels in America and Rome, plus an appendix on how America saw Chesterton. On January 10, 1921, Gilbert and Frances Chesterton began a three month tour of the United States. During their first stop in the City of New York, Chesterton examined the lights of Broadway and proclaimed: "What a glorious garden of wonders this would be to anyone who was lucky enough to be unable to read." In his writing on America, Chesterton shows a remarkable ability for sympathetic appreciation of the principle traits of America. He would acquire an uncanny clear-sightedness about many things in America that it would not be an exaggeration to call clairvoyant. One greatness recognized another greatness, and one can say that Chesterton truly knew something profound about America. Throughout the 1920's and 1930's, Chesterton's travels included Jerusalem, Ireland, North America and Rome. This volume contains his reflections on his 1921 and 1930-31 tour of North America and his 1929 trip to Rome. Readers will enjoy the great man's impressions of city skyscrapers, rural America, the politics of Washington, as well as his views of Pope Pius XI, the Eternal City, Mussolini and Fascism. The introduction to this volume was written by Dr. Robert Royal, Vice President of the Ethics and Public Policy Center, Washington, D.C. The appendix was compiled by the late Chairman of the Northeastern Chapter of the G.K. Chesterton Society, Mr. Robert Knille. The appendix gives the newspaper accounts of Chesterton's 1921 trip to America. It contains generous excerpts of the speeches, interviews and comments G.K.C. made during his tour. Most of the material provided has never appeared in book form.
