Book excerpt: In this dissertation, the design and development of the multiwavelength Brillouin-Erbium fiber laser (BEFL) sources operating in the L-band transmission window is presented and characterized. Four different laser designs have been successfully demonstrated using a combination of stimulated Brillouin scattering effect in optical fiber and Erbium-doped fiber (EDF) amplification. The experimental results obtained from the characterization and optimization of these laser structures are the threshold power, number of the Stokes signals generated, Stokes signals power, self-lasing oscillation and the tuning range. The results are taken from the studies which have been carried out to analyze the effects of 1480 nm pump power, Brillouin pump (BP) power, BP wavelength and single mode fiber (SMF) length. The first laser structure is an efficient multiwavelength L-band BEFL pumped by a 1480 nm pump laser in a linear cavity configuration with direct BP injection into SMF. The issue of low gain efficiency of the L-band in the EDF lasers is resolved with the efficient linear cavity structure and the 1480 nm pumping scheme. The proposed laser structure exhibits a low threshold power of 18 mW and a maximum number of 26 stable output channels with 0.089 nm (10.5 GHz) channels spacing. The second and third laser structures are focused on the enhanced multiwavelength BEFL, in which the BP power is pre-amplified before entering the SMF within the laser cavity. The BP pre-amplification techniques - single pass and double pass represent a new mode of operation of multiwavelength BEFL's. This intra-cavity BP pre-amplification provided by the EDF has created higher intensity of Brillouin Stokes signals generated in the single-mode fiber that leads to the homogenous gain saturation. This effect is able to suppress the built-up of the self-lasing cavity modes in a wider wavelength range and the number of output channels is also enhanced as compared to the conventional BP direct injection. Output of more than 33 laser channels is achieved and the tuning range is almost doubled than that of the conventional BP direct injection technique. Finally, for the fourth laser configuration, the multiwavelength BEFL incorporates either the amplified fiber loop mirror (AFLM) or non-linear amplified fiber loop mirror filter (AFLMF). Fifty-four stable output channels, with 0.089 nm channels spacing, have been achieved. A non-linear AFLMF which induces wavelength-dependent cavity loss and serves as an amplitude equalizer is employed to shift and flatten the EDF gain spectrum. Two control mechanisms have been demonstrated to shift and flatten the EDF gain profile through the adjustment of the polarization controller in the AFLMF. Therefore, the multiwavelength BEFL could be tuned over the whole L-band window from 1570 nm to 1610 nm with the average number of 24 output channels. In addition, flattening the EDF laser oscillation overcomes the requirements of the BP wavelength tuning, in conjunction with the adjustment of the polarization controllers in the fiber loop.

Book excerpt: "The high and rapidly increasing demand for more telecommunication capacity and internet services drives the evolution of fiber optic communication. The third telecom window, which utilizes wavelengths around 1.5 [mu]m and is widely utilized nowadays, can not meet this demand in future. Researchers are trying to develop technologies in new wavelength regions. Longer wavelength region has attracted intense interests for its prospective application. On the other hand, the fact that the wavelength region from 1.7 [mu]m to 2 [mu]m covers the absorption bands of water and greenhouse gas facilitates the applications in such area as sensing, spectroscopy and coherent LIDAR. In this thesis, we demonstrate a multi-wavelength thulium doped fiber laser around 1.9 [mu]m and a bismuth doped fiber laser around 1.7 [mu]m.The 1.9 [mu]m multi-wavelength laser uses a combination of a 25 cm Tm^(3+)-doped silica fiber along with stimulated Brillouin scattering and four wave mixing. More than 100 lines can be observed in the optical spectrum. It is, to the best of our knowledge, the largest number of lasing wavelengths emitting from a Brillouin thulium fiber laser. The peak wavelengths drift less than 0.02 nm and peak powers fluctuate less than 3.4 dB in 20 minutes. The 1.7 [mu]m CW laser uses a 15 m bismuth doped germanosilicate fiber as active fiber. Both linear cavity and ring cavity are tried to build laser. With linear cavity, a laser at 1726 nm has been achieved. The laser has maximum output power of 55 [mu]W with slope efficiency of 5.76*10^(-5) W/W. With ring cavity, the laser has maximum output power of 300 [mu]W with slope efficiency of 3.55*10^(-4) W/W. The laser has single-wavelength operation at 1735 nm or dual-wavelength operation at 1726 nm and 1735 nm." --

Book excerpt: The influence of stimulated scattering on laser intensity in fiber optic waveguides is examined. Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in long, multimode optical waveguides is found to generate a Stokes beam that propagates in the fiber LP01 mode. Additionally, the same process is found to combine multiple laser beams into a single spatially coherent source. Limitations in beam cleanup and combining are also investigated to identify ways to overcome them. The last portion of the dissertation theoretically examines suppression of stimulated Raman scattering in fibers to eliminate the restriction this imposes on the power of a fiber laser or amplifier. The suppression was modeled using both a holmium dopant and adding a long period grating to the fiber. Both methods were shown to have a significant effect on the SRS threshold.

Book excerpt: Ultrashort pulses in mode-locked lasers are receiving focused attention from researchers looking to apply them in a variety of fields, from optical clock technology to measurements of the fundamental constants of nature and ultrahigh-speed optical communications. Ultrashort pulses are especially important for the next generation of ultrahigh-speed optical systems and networks operating at 100 Gbps per carrier. Ultra Fast Fiber Lasers: Principles and Applications with MATLAB® Models is a self-contained reference for engineers and others in the fields of applied photonics and optical communications. Covering both fundamentals and advanced research, this book includes both theoretical and experimental results. MATLAB files are included to provide a basic grounding in the simulation of the generation of short pulses and the propagation or circulation around nonlinear fiber rings. With its unique and extensive content, this volume— Covers fundamental principles involved in the generation of ultrashort pulses employing fiber ring lasers, particularly those that incorporate active optical modulators of amplitude or phase types Presents experimental techniques for the generation, detection, and characterization of ultrashort pulse sequences derived from several current schemes Describes the multiplication of ultrashort pulse sequences using the Talbot diffraction effects in the time domain via the use of highly dispersive media Discusses developments of multiple short pulses in the form of solitons binding together by phase states Elucidates the generation of short pulse sequences and multiple wavelength channels from a single fiber laser The most practical short pulse sources are always found in the form of guided wave photonic structures. This minimizes problems with alignment and eases coupling into fiber transmission systems. In meeting these requirements, fiber ring lasers operating in active mode serve well as suitable ultrashort pulse sources. It is only a matter of time before scientists building on this research develop the practical and easy-to-use applications that will make ultrahigh-speed optical systems universally available.
