Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With his stunning debut novel, She's Come Undone, Wally Lamb won the adulation of critics and readers with his mesmerizing tale of one woman's painful yet triumphant journey of self-discovery. Now, this brilliantly talented writer returns with I Know This Much Is True, a heartbreaking and poignant multigenerational saga of the reproductive bonds of destruction and the powerful force of forgiveness. A masterpiece that breathtakingly tells a story of alienation and connection, power and abuse, devastation and renewal--this novel is a contemporary retelling of an ancient Hindu myth. A proud king must confront his demons to achieve salvation. Change yourself, the myth instructs, and you will inhabit a renovated world. When you're the same brother of a schizophrenic identical twin, the tricky thing about saving yourself is the blood it leaves on your bands--the little inconvenience of the look-alike corpse at your feet. And if you're into both survival of the fittest and being your brother's keeper--if you've promised your dying mother--then say so long to sleep and hello to the middle of the night. Grab a book or a beer. Get used to Letterman's gap-toothed smile of the absurd, or the view of the bedroom ceiling, or the influence of random selection. Take it from a godless insomniac. Take it from the uncrazy twin--the guy who beat the biochemical rap. Dominick Birdsey's entire life has been compromised and constricted by anger and fear, by the paranoid schizophrenic twin brother he both deeply loves and resents, and by the past they shared with their adoptive father, Ray, a spit-and-polish ex-Navy man (the five-foot-six-inch sleeping giant who snoozed upstairs weekdays in the spare room and built submarines at night), and their long-suffering mother, Concettina, a timid woman with a harelip that made her shy and self-conscious: She holds a loose fist to her face to cover her defective mouth--her perpetual apology to the world for a birth defect over which she'd had no control. Born in the waning moments of 1949 and the opening minutes of 1950, the twins are physical mirror images who grow into separate yet connected entities: the seemingly strong and protective yet fearful Dominick, his mother's watchful "monkey"; and the seemingly weak and sweet yet noble Thomas, his mother's gentle "bunny." From childhood, Dominick fights for both separation and wholeness--and ultimately self-protection--in a house of fear dominated by Ray, a bully who abuses his power over these stepsons whose biological father is a mystery. I was still afraid of his anger but saw how he punished weakness--pounced on it. Out of self-preservation I hid my fear, Dominick confesses. As for Thomas, he just never knew how to play defense. He just didn't get it. But Dominick's talent for survival comes at an enormous cost, including the breakup of his marriage to the warm, beautiful Dessa, whom he still loves. And it will be put to the ultimate test when Thomas, a Bible-spouting zealot, commits an unthinkable act that threatens the tenuous balance of both his and Dominick's lives. To save himself, Dominick must confront not only the pain of his past but the dark secrets he has locked deep within himself, and the sins of his ancestors--a quest that will lead him beyond the confines of his blue-collar New England town to the volcanic foothills of Sicily 's Mount Etna, where his ambitious and vengefully proud grandfather and a namesake Domenico Tempesta, the sostegno del famiglia, was born. Each of the stories Ma told us about Papa reinforced the message that he was the boss, that he ruled the roost, that what he said went. Searching for answers, Dominick turns to the whispers of the dead, to the pages of his grandfather's handwritten memoir, The History of Domenico Onofrio Tempesta, a Great Man from Humble Beginnings. Rendered with touches of magic realism, Domenico's fablelike tale--in which monkeys enchant and religious statues weep--becomes the old man's confession--an unwitting legacy of contrition that reveals the truth's of Domenico's life, Dominick learns that power, wrongly used, defeats the oppressor as well as the oppressed, and now, picking through the humble shards of his deconstructed life, he will search for the courage and love to forgive, to expiate his and his ancestors' transgressions, and finally to rebuild himself beyond the haunted shadow of his twin. Set against the vivid panoply of twentieth-century America and filled with richly drawn, memorable characters, this deeply moving and thoroughly satisfying novel brings to light humanity's deepest needs and fears, our aloneness, our desire for love and acceptance, our struggle to survive at all costs. Joyous, mystical, and exquisitely written, I Know This Much Is True is an extraordinary reading experience that will leave no reader untouched.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Book An autobiographic account of her youth, M.J. Henry’s From the Inside Looking Out offers a first-hand view of life in the poor, rural south. She knew early in her life that her family was totally dysfunctional. They were not normal and did not live like other people lived. For most of her life, she has lived under the misconception that if you don't talk about it, it will go away or maybe it isn't true. They were very poor and didn’t know how poor they were until they were older and could see how other people lived. Being poor and dysfunctional are two totally different things. Many people were and still are poor, and that is no shame. It's only shameful when you don't do all you are capable of to overcome it. Verbal and mental abuse have no limits. As an adult, M.J. was having nightmares and horrible dreams about her childhood. She’d heard and experienced that if you put things on paper that it would change the whole perspective in one way or another. She had been praying long before daylight for God to give her some answer for what she should do and how to deal with the future. Later that morning, the inspiration came to her that she should write a book about her life. She felt that she owed it to herself, her children, and grandchildren and all of the others who whispered behind our backs, and to those who were involved in some way. Once M.J. poured out her heart and soul on paper, the dreams stopped! About the Author M.J. Henry grew up in rural Mississippi in the mid-1940s. Early in her life, they had no electricity, running water, or inside plumbing. While she wasn’t all that interested in school, M.J. did graduate from high school. She’s enjoyed two fulfilling jobs each lasting almost 20 years each. She’s worked as a sales manager for a manufacturing company, which gave her the opportunity to travel to many military bases. Her other role was a consolidations supervisor for a student loan company. The most successful, fulfilling job she’s ever had however is being a mother to two amazing children, who have graced her with three precious grand-children and one great grandchild. M.J. currently lives in Mississippi. This is her first published book.

Book excerpt: INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK OF 2018 ONE OF THE ECONOMIST'S BOOKS OF THE YEAR "My new favorite book of all time." --Bill Gates If you think the world is coming to an end, think again: people are living longer, healthier, freer, and happier lives, and while our problems are formidable, the solutions lie in the Enlightenment ideal of using reason and science. By the author of the new book, Rationality. Is the world really falling apart? Is the ideal of progress obsolete? In this elegant assessment of the human condition in the third millennium, cognitive scientist and public intellectual Steven Pinker urges us to step back from the gory headlines and prophecies of doom, which play to our psychological biases. Instead, follow the data: In seventy-five jaw-dropping graphs, Pinker shows that life, health, prosperity, safety, peace, knowledge, and happiness are on the rise, not just in the West, but worldwide. This progress is not the result of some cosmic force. It is a gift of the Enlightenment: the conviction that reason and science can enhance human flourishing. Far from being a naïve hope, the Enlightenment, we now know, has worked. But more than ever, it needs a vigorous defense. The Enlightenment project swims against currents of human nature--tribalism, authoritarianism, demonization, magical thinking--which demagogues are all too willing to exploit. Many commentators, committed to political, religious, or romantic ideologies, fight a rearguard action against it. The result is a corrosive fatalism and a willingness to wreck the precious institutions of liberal democracy and global cooperation. With intellectual depth and literary flair, Enlightenment Now makes the case for reason, science, and humanism: the ideals we need to confront our problems and continue our progress.

Book excerpt: Do you know your own feelings? Sometimes, we're happy, so we laugh and shout with glee. Other times, we're angry, and want to rage and roar. It is not easy to deal with our many contradictory emotions. To recognize our own feelings and deal with them responsibly is an important learning process for children, and a trial of limits. This vibrantly and expressively illustrated book invites children to talk about feelings. It takes readers through a range of potential emotions without ever calling them "good" or "bad," allowing children to recognize and examine their own emotional world.

He and his dysfuctional family are mired in the throes of poverty and despair and he wants out, but he has no money and little education. He decides to seek his fortune in the 'moonshine' whiskey business and manages to get a job with the local bootlegger in hopes of learning the trade. But, alas, his plan gets him nowhere and he winds up in worse shape than before. About this time, he meets and falls 'head over heels' in love with Miranda Weeks, a 16 year old beauty, the first 'encounter' for both of them. His awkward and inept attempts to court Miranda turns into one fiasco after another and he sees no way to ever get the girl's attention. Meanwhile, a rogue, itenerate preacher comes to the little community and has taken complete control, terrorizing the poor sharecroppers, taking whatever he wants and bullying the local farmers into submission. Their vain and ill-conceived attempts to make the preacher leave, result in some unbelievable and bungled scenerios, none of which succed. The preacher eventually crosses Billy Ray's path and a showdown is inevitable. But how can he stand up to this super madman? Will the rogue preacher continue to have his way? Who will ever be able to subdue this self proclaimed 'Man of God'? Will justice ever be served? Perhaps. Perhaps not.

Novak will turn any reader into a comedian—a perfect gift for any special occasion! You might think a book with no pictures seems boring and serious. Except . . . here’s how books work. Everything written on the page has to be said by the person reading it aloud. Even if the words say . . . BLORK. Or BLUURF. Even if the words are a preposterous song about eating ants for breakfast, or just a list of astonishingly goofy sounds like BLAGGITY BLAGGITY and GLIBBITY GLOBBITY. Cleverly irreverent and irresistibly silly, The Book with No Pictures is one that kids will beg to hear again and again. (And parents will be happy to oblige.)

Book excerpt: For anyone intimidated by crowded yoga classes, complicated textbooks, headstands, or simply touching their toes, Yoga for Real People offers a year of classes that progress from beginning to intermediate to advanced levels of practice. A down-to-earth guide for yoga teachers and students alike, this book is illustrated throughout with more than 160 photographs correctly demonstrating 100 poses. Each lesson begins with a discussion of an important yogic concept, before presenting a posture to build flexibility and strength, followed by a meditation to inspire mental relaxation and spiritual growth. As students build a routine, they learn to first "do" the postures, then "experience" the postures, and finally "become" the postures. The appendix includes a complete list of the postures along with a helpful summary of the benefits. Jan Baker's gentle and encouraging style teaches readers how to listen to their bodies, how to stretch without strain, and, most of all, how to find joy in all things. As she writes in the introduction, "If you want to live longer, be healthier, more peaceful - yoga has the answer. How long does it take to accomplish this? That's up to you."
