Book Synopsis Islamic Geometric Patterns by : Jay Bonner
Download or read book Islamic Geometric Patterns written by Jay Bonner and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-17 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main focus of this unique book is an in-depth examination of the polygonal technique; the primary method used by master artists of the past in creating Islamic geometric patterns. The author details the design methodology responsible for this all-but-lost art form and presents evidence for its use from the historical record, both of which are vital contributions to the understanding of this ornamental tradition. Additionally, the author examines the historical development of Islamic geometric patterns, the significance of geometric design within the broader context of Islamic ornament as a whole, the formative role that geometry plays throughout the Islamic ornamental arts (including calligraphy, the floral idiom, dome decoration, geometric patterns, and more), and the underexamined question of pattern classification. Featuring over 600 beautiful color images, Islamic Geometric Patterns: Their Historical Development and Traditional Methods of Con struction is a valuable addition to the literature of Islamic art, architecture and geometric patterns. This book is ideal for students and scholars of geometry, the history of mathematics, and the history of Islamic art, architecture, and culture. In addition, artists, designers, craftspeople, and architects will all find this book an exceptionally informative and useful asset in their fields. Jay Bonner is an architectural ornamentalist and unaffiliated scholar of Islamic geometric design. He received his MDes from the Royal College of Art in London (1983). He has contributed ornamental designs for many international architectural projects, including the expansion of both the al-Masjid al-Haram (Grand Mosque) in Mecca, and the al-Masjid an Nawabi (Prophet’s Mosque) in Medina, as well the Tomb of Sheikh Hujwiri in Lahore, and the Ismaili Centre in London – to name but a few. He is committed to the revitalization of Islamic geometric design through the teaching of traditional methodological practices. To this end, in addition to publishing, Jay Bonner has lectured and taught design seminars at many universities and conferences in North America, Europe, North Africa and Asia.
Download or read book Sol LeWitt written by Simon Starling and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "2005 Turner Prize winner Simon Starling is known for his investigations into the hidden lives of objects and images, and his catalogues are an integral part of his production. The Nanjing Particles, published for an exhibition at MASS MoCA, is a unique object that takes as its departure a historical stereograph of Chinese laborers brought to Massachusetts in 1870 to break a strike. Starling literally mined the photographs for their history, extracting from their emulsion two silver particles. Enlarged one million times, the microscopic grains were translated into stainless steel sculptures fabricated by workers in Nanjing. Taking viewers through the installation and the work's fabrication process, the book reiterates the visual and conceptual play of the exhibition. The cover, which features die-cut peepholes, mimics the form of a structure in the exhibition. Readers can use the book itself as a low-tech stereoscope to view the photographs - printed on the inside covers - as a single three-dimensional image." --Book Jacket.

Book Synopsis Discrete and Computational Geometry by : Jin Akiyama
Download or read book Discrete and Computational Geometry written by Jin Akiyama and published by Springer. This book was released on 2004-05-26 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume consists of those papers presented at the Japan Conference on Discrete and Computational Geometry ’98. The conference was held 9-12 - cember 1998 at Tokai University in Tokyo. Close to a hundred participants from 10 countries participated. Interest in Computational Geometry surfaced among engineers in Japan - out twenty years ago, while interest in Discrete Geometry arose as a natural extension of the research of a group of graph theorists more recently. One of the goals of the conference was to bring together these two groups and to put them in contact with experts in these ?elds from abroad. This is the second conference in the series. The plan is to hold one every year and to publish the papers of the conferences every two years. The organizers thank the sponsors of the conference, namely, The Institute of Educational Development of Tokai University, Grant-in-Aid of the Ministry of Education of Japan (A.Saito;(A)10304008), Mitsubishi Research Institute, Sanada Institute of System Development, Japan Process, and Upward. They also thank especially T. Asano, D. Avis, V. Chv ́ atal, H. Imai, J. Pach, D. R- paport, M. Ruiz, J. O’Rourke, K. Sugihara, T. Tokuyama, and J. Urrutia for their interest and support.
Book Synopsis Validity Assessment in Rehabilitation Psychology and Settings by : Dominic A. Carone

This book was released on 2018-10-12 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book devoted to the topic of validity assessment in rehabilitation contexts and is written by two board certified psychologists with extensive experience in clinical neuropsychology and rehabilitation psychology. This book describes (a) why validity assessment is important, (b) validity assessment methods, and (c) special topics related to validity assessment in rehabilitation psychology (e.g., managing invalid presentations, mild traumatic brain injury, forensic and disability applications, ethical considerations). Although primarily intended for the rehabilitation psychologist who is new to the topic of validity assessment, this book is also designed to be helpful to other rehabilitation specialists, students and trainees, and psychologists experienced in validity assessment, including neuropsychologists.

Book Synopsis Simulated Annealing for VLSI Design by : D.F. Wong
Download or read book Simulated Annealing for VLSI Design written by D.F. Wong and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph represents a summary of our work in the last two years in applying the method of simulated annealing to the solution of problems that arise in the physical design of VLSI circuits. Our study is experimental in nature, in that we are con cerned with issues such as solution representations, neighborhood structures, cost functions, approximation schemes, and so on, in order to obtain good design results in a reasonable amount of com putation time. We hope that our experiences with the techniques we employed, some of which indeed bear certain similarities for different problems, could be useful as hints and guides for other researchers in applying the method to the solution of other prob lems. Work reported in this monograph was partially supported by the National Science Foundation under grant MIP 87-03273, by the Semiconductor Research Corporation under contract 87-DP- 109, by a grant from the General Electric Company, and by a grant from the Sandia Laboratories.
