Book excerpt: A New York Times Best Illustrated Children's Book of 2011! A picture-book delight by a rising talent tells a cumulative tale with a mischievous twist. Features an audio read-along! The bear’s hat is gone, and he wants it back. Patiently and politely, he asks the animals he comes across, one by one, whether they have seen it. Each animal says no, some more elaborately than others. But just as the bear begins to despond, a deer comes by and asks a simple question that sparks the bear’s memory and renews his search with a vengeance. Told completely in dialogue, this delicious take on the classic repetitive tale plays out in sly illustrations laced with visual humor-- and winks at the reader with a wry irreverence that will have kids of all ages thrilled to be in on the joke.

Book excerpt: Whether they're decorating Easter trees or celebrating Wagner's birthday by playing recordings of his Ring cycle operas and incinerating a model of Valhalla on an outdoor barbecue to the closing strains of "Gotterdämerung," Americans know both how to create and how to celebrate holidays. Jack Santino's guide to such frivolity is a wonderfully readable exploration of holidays, periods of festivity, and life-cycle rituals and celebrations. Santino draws on history, anthropology, popular culture, and folklore to show the intricate relationships between holidays and the roles that celebrations and rituals play in people's lives.

Book excerpt: If you are looking for diversity of style and content you are in the right place: we are as different as Snowflakes on the Plains: each with an exquisite pattern, a delicate crystal of the same substance. Sometimes one could even think that we are as different as chalk and cheese! There is a love of nature: the country, the environment, the trees and animals, empathy for the soldiers and their loved ones: men and women who died during the Great War, excursions into fantasy. There is a fascination with the meaning of life and death and the universe itself. Exploring the past, present and the future: the hidden meanings behind it all, and there is even a good dose of larrikinism to stop us being too serious or over pompous about any of these things!

Book excerpt: Hedda Hopper came into this world screaming, and she liked to say that she never stopped. Decades after, she could still out-shout any producer in Hollywood, and she wasn’t afraid to do whatever it took to get her way. One of the most glamorous stars of the silent era, Hopper became one of the most notorious gossip columnists in the country, whose acid wit and razor-sharp pen fearlessly attacked the biggest names in Hollywood. In From Under My Hat, she tells her story as only she can. From her birth in the suburbs of Pennsylvania, to her early days as a Broadway understudy to her rise and fall as a Hollywood starlet, Hopper tells the story of the golden age of the movie business with candor and grace. At the height of her popularity, 20,000,000 read Hopper’s column. Reading her searing autobiography, it’s easy to see why. Hedda Hopper is portrayed by Judy Davis in the Ryan Murphy TV series Feud about Joan Crawford and Bette Davis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Late Victorian Folksong Revival: The Persistence of English Melody, 1878-1903, E. David Gregory provides a reliable and comprehensive history of the birth and early development of the first English folksong revival. Continuing where Victorian Songhunters, his first book, left off, Gregory systematically explores what the Late Victorian folksong collectors discovered in the field and what they published for posterity, identifying differences between the songs noted from oral tradition and those published in print. In doing so, he determines the extent to which the collectors distorted what they found when publishing the results of their research in an era when some folksong texts were deemed unsuitable for "polite ears." The book provides a reliable overall survey of the birth of a movement, tracing the genesis and development of the first English folksong revival. It discusses the work of more than a dozen song-collectors, focusing in particular on three key figures: the pioneer folklorist in the English west country, Reverend Sabine Baring-Gould; Frank Kidson, who greatly increased the known corpus of Yorkshire song; and Lucy Broadwood, who collected mainly in the counties of Sussex and Surrey, and with Kidson and others, was instrumental in founding the Folk Song Society in the late 1890s. The book includes copious examples of the song tunes and texts collected, including transcriptions of nearly 300 traditional ballads, broadside ballads, folk lyrics, occupational songs, carols, shanties, and "national songs," demonstrating the abundance and high quality of the songs recovered by these early collectors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A walk of one million steps ...five-hundred miles from France to Santiago, Spain ...walking the way of St. James ... My journey on the Camino de Santiago was a test that I created for myself because I needed to say thank you for all of my many blessings and to do so in a way that took me well outside my comfort zone. My journey on the Camino de Santiago provided lots of laughs and smiles as well as tears and pain. Along the way I had the good fortune to meet many very interesting people from all over the world. Walking for thirty-four days through rain, snow, heat, and cold tested my commitment to continue each day. Being alone in the middle of nowhere also provided me with a solitude that very few people get to experience. Each day of my journey had its own finish line, and each finish line was very different from the day before, and in large part that was a real motivator—get to the finish line so I could relax and celebrate that day’s victory. This journey tested me in ways that I didn’t anticipate. I trained for several months to prepare myself for this journey, but I was not prepared for everything I encountered on my walk. Sometimes life gives you unexpected opportunities to give, to learn, and to grow. This book describes what happens when you push yourself beyond your comfort zone and embrace whatever life brings you with open eyes and an open heart.
