Book Synopsis Degrees of Difficulty by : Georgia Cervin
Download or read book Degrees of Difficulty written by Georgia Cervin and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2021-06-15 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How the Cold War era changed the trajectory of women's gymnastics Electrifying athletes like Olga Korbut and Nadia Comăneci helped make women’s artistic gymnastics one of the most popular events in the Olympic Games. But the transition of gymnastics from a women’s sport to a girl’s sport in the 1970s also laid the foundation for a system of emotional, physical, and sexual abuse of gymnasts around the world. Georgia Cervin offers a unique history of women's gymnastics, examining how the high-stakes diplomatic rivalry of the Cold War created a breeding ground for exploitation. Yet, a surprising spirit of international collaboration arose to decide the social values and image of femininity demonstrated by the sport. Cervin also charts the changes in style, equipment, training, and participants that transformed the sport, as explosive athleticism replaced balletic grace and gymnastics dominance shifted from East to West. Sweeping and revelatory, Degrees of Difficulty tells a story of international friction, unexpected cooperation, and the legacy of abuse and betrayal created by the win-at-all-cost attitudes of the Cold War.
Book Synopsis Exploring Mental Blocks in NCAA Women’s Gymnastics by : Lou Marie Knapp
Download or read book Exploring Mental Blocks in NCAA Women’s Gymnastics written by Lou Marie Knapp and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A mental block in gymnastics is a performance-inhibiting phenomenon in which a gymnast loses the ability to perform previously automatic skills without any obvious reason. To explore this condition in NCAA Women’s Gymnastics, female collegiate gymnasts (N = 100) completed an online survey that included established questionnaires assessing presence of mental blocks and assessing perfectionism, rumination, and reinvestment levels. Results showed that the majority of gymnasts experience mental blocks across all divisions of NCAA Women’s Gymnastics. A MANOVA analysis revealed higher levels of ruminative reflection and conscious motor processing in gymnasts who have experienced mental blocks compared to gymnasts who have not experience mental blocks. These findings increase the understanding of mental blocks and indicate that aspects of rumination and reinvestment may increase vulnerability to the condition. Future research in this area might offer further insight into underlying causes of mental block development and possible interventions to help affected gymnasts and coaches more effectively.

Book excerpt: This book lifts the lid on the high pressured, complex world of women’s artistic gymnastics. By adopting a socio-cultural lens incorporating historical, sociological and psychological perspectives, it takes the reader through the story and workings of women’s artistic gymnastics. Beginning with its early history as a ‘feminine appropriate’ sport, the book follows the sport through its transition to a modern sports form. Including global cases and innovative narrative methods, it explores the way gymnasts have experienced its intense challenges, the complexities of the coach-athlete relationship, and how others involved in the sport, such as parents and medical personnel, have contributed to the reproduction of a highly demanding and potentially abusive sporting culture. With the focus on a unique women’s sport, the book is an important read for researchers and students studying sport sociology, sport coaching, and physical education, but it is also a valuable resource for anyone interested in the development of sporting talent.

Download or read book Exploring the Motivations of NCAA Women's Artistic Gymnasts to Participate in Strength and Conditioning Training written by Jennifer Pfohl and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the known first study completed on NCAA gymnastics motivations to participate in strength and conditioning. The study was open to all NCAA women's artistic gymnastics participants. Research included the completion of an online survey (n = 141) with the opportunity to volunteer for a follow up phone interview (n = 5). Three research questions were examined: 1. What are the motivations of student-athletes in NCAA Women's Artistic Gymnastics to participate in strength and conditioning training? 2. How does motivation to participate in strength and conditioning training influence the performance level of the student-athletes? 3. How does motivation to participate in strength and conditioning training influence the injury rate of the student-athletes? Overall, this study did not identify significant findings in the relationship with motivation to participate in strength and conditioning training with level of performance or injury rates. Qualitative phone interviews provided additional insight on experiences and feelings toward strength and conditioning training, which can be utilized by both researchers and practitioners. In order to further explore the relationship between strength and conditioning and gymnastics performance more research needs to be completed.
