Yawar Fiesta describes the social relations between Indians, mestizos, and whites in the Peruvian highland town of Puquio in the early twentieth century. Each group’s reaction to the national government’s attempt to suppress the traditional Indian-style bullfight reflects their attitude toward social change more generally. Included with the text of the novel is Arguedas’ anthropological essay “Puquio: A Culture in the Process of Change,” written eighteen years after Yawar Fiesta. The article emphasizes the social changes in the village that resulted from the road construction described in the novel. While Arguedas’ poetry was published in Quechua, he invented a language for his novels in which he used native syntax with Spanish vocabulary, making translation into other languages extremely difficult. Frances Horning Barraclough has met the challenge and produced an excellent work that remains faithful to the author’s use of language to reflect with lived experience of Peruvian Indians.

Indeed, 16 of 23 extant vulture species are at-risk of extinction; vulture declines have been recent and rapid, and many species continue to exhibit range-wide contractions in both abundance and distribution. My dissertation focuses on the spatial and trophic ecology of vultures, with a particular emphasis on Andean condors (Vultur gryphus), to understand their threats and inform conservation measurements. In Chapter one I used genetic approaches to reconstruct demographic trajectories from the late Pleistocene to modern times, and found that Andean condors in South America, California condors (Gymnogyps californianus) in North America, and white-backed vultures (Gyps africanus) in Africa have increased in population size during this time, indicating that flexible foraging strategies of extant vultures allowed them to thrive despite large environmental changes. In Chapter two I analyzed GPS locations of thirty-five Andean condors in southern South America to model how landscape predictors influence condor habitat selection during foraging, flying and roosting. I assembled this information into a unique model of spatial priorities across ~30% of condor distribution, highlighting the relevancy of a holistic approach on habitat requirements for wide-ranging species. My third chapter evaluates trophic and spatial segregation between dimorphic and socially despotic Andean condors females and males across a spectrum of human-altered landscapes featuring different prey diversity. My analyses of stable isotopes on molted feathers and space use of GPS-tracked birds revealed a lack of sexual differences in home range overlap, feeding locations, and trophic partitioning. Scattered carrion resources and social information transfer might prevent sexual segregation despite condor despotic behavior. My final and fourth chapter provides guidance for range-wide and long-term monitoring programmes for vulture conservation globally. I reviewed the common techniques use to study vulture populations around the globe and found that most studies are restricted to specific regions and species, preventing international collaboration and comparison of estimated demographic parameters. My review identified shed feathers as the most effective technique for monitoring vultures at continental scales. Altogether, my dissertation provides insight on vulture ecology and potential management strategies in human-dominated landscapes.
