Book excerpt: These journal chapters of ALIVE! Volume 2 are descriptive of the author's walks outdoors enjoying nature and communing with the Lord whom he loved. Dr. Fowler writes, "The title of this book is spelled with five full capitalized uppercase letters (A-L-I-V-E) followed by a throbbing exclamation point (!) so that it will be read as a celebrational shout, an exultant affirmation upon a silver trumpet. Its title is not simply 'ALIVE!' The word 'alive' is merely a word spoken as a word, nothing more, whereas this book and title ALIVE! are both explosive shouts of joy-a vital joy that is at once exultant and serenely calm. There is a disposition, a healthful state of soul, an attitude toward the allness of life in these pages which is greater than any single insight or described experience in any one chapter. "Glad-to-be-alive is the theme which most occupies this book." Samuel W. Fowler was born November 30, 1934, in Washington, D.C. He trusted Christ as his Savior October 12, 1954. He received his Th.D.from Dallas Theological Seminary and was professor of Bible and Theology for 43 years in several Bible colleges. His unique teaching and preaching style reached many students who are now serving the Lord around the world. He also served as interim pastor and full-time pastor in several churches. Dr. Fowler's previous works Coping Strategies, Meditations on the Glory of God, Afoot and Delighthearted, and ALIVE! Volume 1 have been a blessing to many Christians. Although Dr. Fowler's expertise was in Bible and Theology, he also had a deep love of nature, which inspired him to become a poet. Dr. Fowler was ushered into the presence of His Glory on July 11, 2008.

Book excerpt: This book, I Want To Live, Volume Two, is the follow up to the first I Want To Live book. After my first medical operation for bowel cancer in 1994, I thought then that I was free of this awful disease. But my troubles had only just begun. What had pleasantly turned from good news from the doctors about an illness that was in remission would turn into another nightmare. Just a short eighteen months later, after a Cat-scan at hospital, I was told by the doctors that there had been a recurrence of my illness. Now another serious operation was in the offing in 1996. This second operation took place, following by radiotherapy. I had triumphed again, for how long? I was to return to hospital for another operation in 1997, the third in three years... surely this was the last, I wondered. But it was not to be. Ten years passed, then I returned to hospital again in 2007.

Book excerpt: Have you sensed it? Chaos. Violence. Confusion. Anxiety. How do we know what's true when there are so many differing voices telling us what to do? After traveling the world for 23 years in a rock band, John L. Cooper has noticed one consistent issue: people are desperately confused. Awake & Alive to Truth tackles the reigning philosophies of our day of post-modernism, relativism, and the popular view of the goodness of man and combats these viewpoints by standing on the absolute truth of the Word of God. Awake & Alive to Truth answers some of the most asked questions in modern culture. Go on a journey through some John Cooper's personal stories, the doctrine of original sin, the authority of Scripture, the danger of trusting your emotions, and end with the greatest news possible: God wants to rescue you from the chaos and the darkness and bring you into His glorious light.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dangerous work of leading change--somebody has to do it. Will you put yourself on the line? To lead is to live dangerously. It's romantic and exciting to think of leadership as all inspiration, decisive action, and rich rewards, but leading requires taking risks that can jeopardize your career and your personal life. It requires putting yourself on the line, disrupting the status quo, and surfacing hidden conflict. And when people resist and push back, there's a strong temptation to play it safe. Those who choose to lead plunge in, take the risks, and sometimes get burned. But it doesn't have to be that way say renowned leadership experts Ronald Heifetz and Marty Linsky. In Leadership on the Line, they show how it's possible to make a difference without getting "taken out" or pushed aside. They present everyday tools that give equal weight to the dangerous work of leading change and the critical importance of personal survival. Through vivid stories from all walks of life, the authors present straightforward strategies for navigating the perilous straits of leadership. Whether you're a parent or a politician, a CEO or a community activist, this practical book shows how you can exercise leadership and survive and thrive to enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Book excerpt: Inspired by women’s struggles for the protection of nature as a condition for human survival, award-winning environmentalist Vandana Shiva shows how ecological destruction and the marginalization of women are not inevitable, economically or scientifically. She argues that “maldevelopment”—the violation of the integrity of organic, interconnected, and interdependent systems that sets in motion a process of exploitation, inequality, and injustice—is dragging the world down a path of self-destruction, threatening survival itself. Shiva articulates how rural Indian women experience and perceive ecological destruction and its causes, and how they have conceived and initiated processes to arrest the destruction of nature and begin its regeneration. Focusing on science and development as patriarchal projects, Staying Alive is a powerfully relevant book that positions women not solely as survivors of the crisis, but as the source of crucial insights and visions to guide our struggle. She has failed to give him a son and her sharp intelligence and audacious will alienate his old friends and the noble families of England. When the discarded Katherine dies in exile from the court, Anne stands starkly exposed, the focus of gossip and malice. At a word from Henry, Thomas Cromwell is ready to bring her down. Over three terrifying weeks, Anne is ensnared in a web of conspiracy, while the demure Jane Seymour stands waiting her turn for the poisoned wedding ring. But Anne and her powerful family will not yield without a ferocious struggle. Hilary Mantel's Bring Up the Bodies follows the dramatic trial of the queen and her suitors for adultery and treason. To defeat the Boleyns, Cromwell must ally with his natural enemies, the papist aristocracy. What price will he pay for Anne's head?
