Mean tube diameter can be preselected from 0.5 to 0.9nm. A sample predominantly semiconducting with two main tubes (7,5 and 8,3), and a sample of smaller (0.5-0.6nm) and mainly metallic tubes were produced. The process also laid the ground for production of the first pure boron nanotubes. In our SWNT synthesis experiments using CO disproportionation at 6 atm and lower pressures, the Co-MCM-41 and Ni-MCM-41 catalysts produced more than 90% selectivity to SWNT with increasing yields as the pressure is increased. The key advantage of our technique is the incorporation of metals into the pore wall of the template, which allows ultra-small metal clusters to be formed and stabilized. These clusters then initiate the growth of highly uniform diameter SWNT. Examples of uniform small diameter SWNT formed with two of our catalysts are shown in Figure 1 below.

Book excerpt: Carbon Nanotube Field Effect Transistor (CNFET) technology has received a lot of attention in the past few years as a promising extension to silicon-CMOS for future digital logic integrated circuits. While recent research has advanced CNFET technology past many important milestones, robust and scalable solutions must be developed to realize the full potential of CNFETs. Thus, this thesis aims to develop a suite of techniques, spanning from material synthesis to circuit solutions, compatible with very-large-scale integration (VLSI). Specifically, to enable the real-world engineering of carbon nanotube integrated circuits, this thesis presents (1) wafer-scale aligned CNT growth, (2) wafer-scale CNT Transfer, (3) wafer-scale device and circuit fabrication techniques, and (4) ACCNT, a VLSI-compatible circuit design solution to surmounting the problem of metallic CNTs. These techniques culminated in the successful demonstration of CNT transistors, inverters, and NAND logic gates on a wafer scale. Furthermore, this thesis sheds light on important design considerations for the demonstration of a simple CNT "computer" and suggests a few critical directions for future work in the field of carbon nanotube technology. In contributing the above, this thesis hopes to propel carbon nanotube technology forward towards the vision of robust, large-scale integrated circuits using high-density carbon nanotubes.

Book excerpt: Carbon nanotubes are one of the most intriguing new materials with extraordinary properties being discovered in the last decade. The unique structure of carbon nanotubes provides nanotubes with extraordinary mechanical and electrical properties. The outstanding properties that these materials possess have opened new interesting researches areas in nanoscience and nanotechnology. Although nanotubes are very promising in a wide variety of fields, application of individual nanotubes for large scale production has been limited. The main roadblocks, which hinder its use, are limited understanding of its synthesis and electrical properties which lead to difficulty in structure control, existence of impurities, and poor processability. This book makes an attempt to provide indepth study and analysis of various synthesis methods, processing techniques and characterization of carbon nanotubes that will lead to the increased applications of carbon nanotubes.

Book excerpt: Carbon Nanotube Reinforced Composites introduces a wide audience of engineers, scientists and product designers to this important and rapidly expanding class of high performance composites. Dr Loos provides readers with the scientific fundamentals of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), CNT composites and nanotechnology in a way which will enable them to understand the performance, capability and potential of the materials under discussion. He also investigates how CNT reinforcement can be used to enhance the mechanical, electrical and thermal properties of polymer composites. Production methods, processing technologies and applications are fully examined, with reference to relevant patents. Finally, health and safety issues related to the use of CNTs are investigated. Dr. Loos compares the theoretical expectations of using CNTs to the results obtained in labs, and explains the reasons for the discrepancy between theoretical and experimental results. This approach makes the book an essential reference and practical guide for engineers and product developers working with reinforced polymers – as well as researchers and students in polymer science, materials and nanotechnology. A wealth of applications information is included, taken from the wide range of industry sectors utilizing CNT reinforced composites, such as energy, coatings, defense, electronics, medical devices, and high performance sports equipment. Introduces a wide range of readers involved in plastics engineering, product design and manufacturing to the relevant topics in nano-science, nanotechnology, nanotubes and composites. Assesses effects of CNTs as reinforcing agents, both in a materials context and an applications setting. Focuses on applications aspects – performance, cost, health and safety, etc – for a wide range of industry sectors, e.g. energy, coatings, defense, electronics, medical devices, high performance sports equipment, etc.

Book excerpt: Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have received much attention from both the scientific and industrial communities due to their structural properties and unique morphology. There has also been growing interest in vertically aligned single walled carbon nanotubes (VA-SWNTs) because of their suitability for building devices such as hydrogen storage and super capacitors. Various methods including chemical vapor deposition (CVD) have been developed for growing VA-SWNTs. Among them is alcohol catalytic CVD which is well known for its economic viability, comprehensive substrates selectivity and good yield of VA-SWNTs. In order to fully understand the growth mechanism of those CNTs, an examination of the role of inputs like hydrocarbon flow rate, reaction time, chamber temperature, and pressure is essential. This work studies the controllability of VA-SWNTs growth by a hybrid process model of an experimental design and an artificial neural network (ANN).

Book excerpt: The series Topics in Current Chemistry Collections presents critical reviews from the journal Topics in Current Chemistry organized in topical volumes. The scope of coverage is all areas of chemical science including the interfaces with related disciplines such as biology, medicine and materials science. The goal of each thematic volume is to give the non-specialist reader, whether in academia or industry, a comprehensive insight into an area where new research is emerging which is of interest to a larger scientific audience. Each review within the volume critically surveys one aspect of that topic and places it within the context of the volume as a whole. The most significant developments of the last 5 to 10 years are presented using selected examples to illustrate the principles discussed. The coverage is not intended to be an exhaustive summary of the field or include large quantities of data, but should rather be conceptual, concentrating on the methodological thinking that will allow the non-specialist reader to understand the information presented. Contributions also offer an outlook on potential future developments in the field.
