Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anyone who works in an office probably has to deal with at least some people who are so different they might as well be from another planet. These differences can lead to conflict or -- if handled properly -- to a greater appreciation of others and a more productive workplace. The secret to getting along lies in understanding the different personality traits people exhibit and how to relate to them. The author identifies 11 traits that can make work relationships difficult, which she compares to the planets (plus the moon and the sun), including: * Saturn, with its distinctive rings, symbolizes how comfortable one is being different, and shows whether one is more of a conformist or experimenter * Jupiter, made up mostly of gases, has a bubbly spirit, and signifies one’s level of optimism * Earth (as in "down to Earth") indicates whether someone is grounded, or has one’s "head in the clouds." Fun and easy to read, yet packed with realistic strategies, this very human guide will help anyone on the planet get along with even their most difficult coworker.

Book excerpt: This is the first book to read -- and the most concise reference to keep -- for answers about employers' obligations under the complex web of labor and employment laws. The authors summarize the key laws, rules, and regulations that affect on-the-job practices and benefits programs including: -- The Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) -- Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) -- plant closings and layoffs (WARN Act) privacy and individual employee rights -- legality of testing applicants and employees -- union activity and collective bargaining issues, and much more You get clear explanations, checklists, and examples -- plus a glossary of terms you need to know to succeed in the employment law and employee relations arena. And since states' requirements can differ, the authors also give you a listing of state labor departments, human relations commissions, and NLRB field offices for your specific follow-up. Use of this handbook can help protect any organization from legal blind spots -- and help protect individuals from personal liability.

Book excerpt: How do people come up with truly original ideas? The answer is to think outside the box—way outside. For the past decade, Cyril Bouquet, Jean-Louis Barsoux, and Michael Wade, professors of innovation and strategy at IMD Business School, have studied inventors, scientists, doctors, entrepreneurs, and artists. These people, or “aliens,” as the authors call them, are able to make leaps of creativity, and use five patterns of thinking that distinguish them from the rest of us. These five patterns—Attention, Levitation, Imagination, Experimentation, and Navigation—lead to a fresh and flexible approach to problem-solving. Alien thinkers know how to free the imagination so it can detect hard-to-observe patterns. They practice deliberate ways to retreat from the world in order to see the big picture underlying a problem. And they approach ideas in systematic ways that reflect the constraints of reality. Through surprising and compelling stories, the authors show how readers can use this method to develop out-of-this-world ideas. ALIEN Thinking can help any of us find innovative solutions to the most difficult problems.

Book excerpt: "The United States Code is the official codification of the general and permanent laws of the United States of America. The Code was first published in 1926, and a new edition of the code has been published every six years since 1934. The 2012 edition of the Code incorporates laws enacted through the One Hundred Twelfth Congress, Second Session, the last of which was signed by the President on January 15, 2013. It does not include laws of the One Hundred Thirteenth Congress, First Session, enacted between January 2, 2013, the date it convened, and January 15, 2013. By statutory authority this edition may be cited "U.S.C. 2012 ed." As adopted in 1926, the Code established prima facie the general and permanent laws of the United States. The underlying statutes reprinted in the Code remained in effect and controlled over the Code in case of any discrepancy. In 1947, Congress began enacting individual titles of the Code into positive law. When a title is enacted into positive law, the underlying statutes are repealed and the title then becomes legal evidence of the law. Currently, 26 of the 51 titles in the Code have been so enacted. These are identified in the table of titles near the beginning of each volume. The Law Revision Counsel of the House of Representatives continues to prepare legislation pursuant to 2 U.S.C. 285b to enact the remainder of the Code, on a title-by-title basis, into positive law. The 2012 edition of the Code was prepared and published under the supervision of Ralph V. Seep, Law Revision Counsel. Grateful acknowledgment is made of the contributions by all who helped in this work, particularly the staffs of the Office of the Law Revision Counsel and the Government Printing Office"--Preface.
