Book Synopsis Models of Economic Liberalization by : Sebastián Etchemendy
Download or read book Models of Economic Liberalization written by Sebastián Etchemendy and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-09-26 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to explain the variation in the models of economic liberalization across Ibero-America in the last quarter of the twentieth century, and the legacies they produced for the current organization of the political economies. Although the macroeconomics of effective market adjustment evolved in a similar way, the patterns of compensation delivered by neoliberal governments and the type of actors in business and the working class that benefited from them were remarkably different. Etchemendy argues that the most decisive factors that shape adjustment paths are the type of regime and the economic and organizational power with which business and labor emerged from the inward-oriented model. The analysis spans from the origins of state, business and labor industrial actors in the 1930s and 1940s to the politics of compensation under neoliberalism across the Ibero-American world, combined with extensive field work material on Spain, Argentina and Chile.

Book Synopsis European and Latin American Social Scientists as Refugees, Émigrés and Return‐Migrants by : Ludger Pries

This book was released on 2018-10-28 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1930s, thousands of social scientists fled the Nazi regime or other totalitarian European regimes, mainly towards the Americas. The New School for Social Research (NSSR) in New York City and El Colegio de México (Colmex) in Mexico City both were built based on receiving exiled academics from Europe. Comparing the first twenty years of these organizations, this book offers a deeper understanding of the corresponding institutional contexts and impacts of emigrated, exiled and refugeed academics. It analyses the ambiguities of scientists’ situations between emigration, return‐migration and transnational life projects and examines the corresponding dynamics of application, adaptation or amalgamation of (travelling) theories and methods these academics brought. Despite its institutional focus, it also deals with the broader context of forced migration of intellectuals and scientists in the second half of the last century in Europe and Latin America. In so doing, the book invites a deeper understanding of the challenges of forced migration for scholars in the 21st century.

Book Synopsis The Limits of Economic Reform in El Salvador by : W. Pelupessy
Download or read book The Limits of Economic Reform in El Salvador written by W. Pelupessy and published by Springer. This book was released on 1997-09-22 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: El Salvador is a small developing country that has undergone important processes of agrarian change and suffered the consequences of a 12-year civil war which ended with a peace agreement in the 1990s. Economic reforms have given insufficient weight to history, institutions and politics. This book will show that to improve their efficiency, there is a need to consider how both economic and political variables have affected social structures and institutions. To be sustainable reforms should aim at an appropriate balance between growth and distribution. The outcomes of this research question some commonly accepted theses on agrarian transformation, state autonomy and the role of economic policy and foreign intervention in El Salvador and Central America in general.

Download or read book Economía política desde Estambul a Potosí written by Fernando Ramos Palencia and published by Universitat de València. This book was released on 2012-07 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book The Unidad Popular and the Pinochet Dictatorship written by P. Meller and published by Springer. This book was released on 2000-09-11 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Unidad Popular and the Pinochet Dictatorship covers the two most conflicting Chilean governments of this century. The analysis of the Allende government examines the macroeconomic policies and structural reforms and their results; the questioning of property rights constituted a key issue of conflict. The analysis of the Pinochet government starts with a review of Chilean democracy breakdown. Then it examines the success, failure, and final success of economic structural reforms. The book ends with a discussion of the legacies of both governments. In the historical Chilean memory of the century, human rights violations will occupy a special place.
