Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Digital Signal Processing Algorithms describes computational number theory and its applications to deriving fast algorithms for digital signal processing. It demonstrates the importance of computational number theory in the design of digital signal processing algorithms and clearly describes the nature and structure of the algorithms themselves. The book has two primary focuses: first, it establishes the properties of discrete-time sequence indices and their corresponding fast algorithms; and second, it investigates the properties of the discrete-time sequences and the corresponding fast algorithms for processing these sequences. Digital Signal Processing Algorithms examines three of the most common computational tasks that occur in digital signal processing; namely, cyclic convolution, acyclic convolution, and discrete Fourier transformation. The application of number theory to deriving fast and efficient algorithms for these three and related computationally intensive tasks is clearly discussed and illustrated with examples. Its comprehensive coverage of digital signal processing, computer arithmetic, and coding theory makes Digital Signal Processing Algorithms an excellent reference for practicing engineers. The authors' intent to demystify the abstract nature of number theory and the related algebra is evident throughout the text, providing clear and precise coverage of the quickly evolving field of digital signal processing.

Book excerpt: This book highlights new methods, algorithms and software for the digital processing and recovery of signals. In addition, it describes a new method for modeling one dimensional and multidimensional signals as successions of local polynomial splines and their spectral characteristics. It provides examples of how the proposed methods can be applied in specific cases, together with signal processing software examples in the MATLAB environment, and models of special processes in the Simulink environment. The book’s goal is to make it easier for beginners to understand the subject matter; it is intended for engineers, undergraduate and graduate students engaged in research or the evaluation and design of hardware and software for the digital processing and recovery of signals.

Book excerpt: Algorithms for computation are a central part of both digital signal pro cessing and decoders for error-control codes and the central algorithms of the two subjects share many similarities. Each subject makes extensive use of the discrete Fourier transform, of convolutions, and of algorithms for the inversion of Toeplitz systems of equations. Digital signal processing is now an established subject in its own right; it no longer needs to be viewed as a digitized version of analog signal process ing. Algebraic structures are becoming more important to its development. Many of the techniques of digital signal processing are valid in any algebraic field, although in most cases at least part of the problem will naturally lie either in the real field or the complex field because that is where the data originate. In other cases the choice of field for computations may be up to the algorithm designer, who usually chooses the real field or the complex field because of familiarity with it or because it is suitable for the particular application. Still, it is appropriate to catalog the many algebraic fields in a way that is accessible to students of digital signal processing, in hopes of stimulating new applications to engineering tasks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polynomial decomposition has attracted considerable attention in computational mathematics. In general, the field identifies polynomials f(x) and g(x) such that their composition f(g(x)) equals or approximates a given polynomial h(x). Despite potentially promising applications, polynomial decomposition has not been significantly utilized in signal processing. This thesis studies the sensitivities of polynomial composition and decomposition to explore their robustness in potential signal processing applications and develops effective polynomial decomposition algorithms to be applied in a signal processing context. First, we state the problems of sensitivity, exact decomposition, and approximate decomposition. After that, the sensitivities of the composition and decomposition operations are theoretically derived from the perspective of robustness. In particular, we present and validate an approach to decrease certain sensitivities by using equivalent compositions, and a practical rule for parameter selection is proposed to get to a point that is near the minimum of these sensitivities. Then, new algorithms are proposed for the exact decomposition problems, and simulations are performed to make comparison with existing approaches. Finally, existing and new algorithms for the approximate decomposition problems are presented and evaluated using numerical simulations.

The theory of sum-of-squares trigonometric polynomials is presented unitarily based on the concept of Gram matrix (extended to Gram pair or Gram set). The applications part is organized as a collection of related problems that use systematically the theoretical results.

Book excerpt: Digital Signal Processing: Applications to Communications and Algebraic Coding Theories discusses the design of computationally efficient digital signal processing algorithms over finite fields and the relation of these algorithms to algebraic error-correcting codes. The book provides chapters that cover such topics as signal processing techniques employed for modeling, synthesis, and analysis; systems of bilinear forms; efficient finite field algorithms; the design and study of long length cyclic convolutions and some preliminary results on their relation to linear codes; the study of the algebraic structure of the class of linear codes obtained from bilinear cyclic and aperiodic convolution algorithms over the finite field of interest; and the concept of a generalized hybrid Automatic- Repeat-Request (ARQ) scheme for adaptive error control in digital communication systems. Engineers, mathematicians, and computer scientists will find the text invaluable.

Notoriously variable, the effects of stress can be subtle to severe, immediate or delayed, impairing individual and group readiness, operational performance, and—ultimately—survival. A comprehensive compilation on the state of the science, Biobehavioral Resilience to Stress identifies key factors and characteristics that are essential to a scientifically useful and behaviorally predictive understanding of resilience to stress. Contributions from Uniquely Qualified Military and Civilian Experts Initiated by the Military Operational Medicine Research Directorate of the US Army Medical Research and Material Command (USAMRMC), this seminal volume integrates recent research and experience from military and civilian experts in behavioral and social sciences, human performance, and physiology. Each chapter is grounded in vigorous research with emphasis on relevance to a variety of real-world operations and settings, including extreme environments encountered in modern war. Logical Progression, Cross-Disciplinary Appeal Organized into four sections, the text begins with a discussion of the relevant aspects of stress in the context of military life to offer civilian readers a window into contemporary military priorities. Later chapters consider biological, physiological, and genetic factors, psychosocial aspects of resilience, and “community capacity” variables that influence psychological responses to stressful events. This multidisciplinary effort concludes with an overview of emergent themes and related issues to advance the science of resilience toward predictive research, theory, and application for all those—military and civilian—who serve in the national defense.

Book excerpt: This graduate-level text provides a language for understanding, unifying, and implementing a wide variety of algorithms for digital signal processing - in particular, to provide rules and procedures that can simplify or even automate the task of writing code for the newest parallel and vector machines. It thus bridges the gap between digital signal processing algorithms and their implementation on a variety of computing platforms. The mathematical concept of tensor product is a recurring theme throughout the book, since these formulations highlight the data flow, which is especially important on supercomputers. Because of their importance in many applications, much of the discussion centres on algorithms related to the finite Fourier transform and to multiplicative FFT algorithms.

Book excerpt: Efficient signal processing algorithms are important for embedded and power-limited applications since, by reducing the number of computations, power consumption can be reduced significantly. Similarly, efficient algorithms are also critical to very large scale applications such as video processing and four-dimensional medical imaging. This self-contained guide, the only one of its kind, enables engineers to find the optimum fast algorithm for a specific application. It presents a broad range of computationally-efficient algorithms, describes their structure and implementation, and compares their relative strengths for given problems. All the necessary background mathematics is included and theorems are rigorously proved, so all the information needed to learn and apply the techniques is provided in one convenient guide. With this practical reference, researchers and practitioners in electrical engineering, applied mathematics, and computer science can reduce power dissipation for low-end applications of signal processing, and extend the reach of high-end applications.
