Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cyanobacteria make a major contribution to world photosynthesis and nitrogen fixation, but are also notorious for causing nuisances such as dense and often toxic `blooms' in lakes and the ocean. The Ecology of Cyanobacteria: Their Diversity in Time and Space is the first book to focus solely on ecological aspects of these organisms. Its twenty-two chapters are written by some thirty authors, who are leading experts in their particular subject. The book begins with an overview of the cyanobacteria - or blue-green algae, for those who are not specialists - then looks at their diversity in the geological record and goes on to describe their ecology in present environments where they play important roles. Why is one of the key groups of organisms in the Precambrian still one of the most important groups of phototrophs today? The importance of ecological information for rational management and exploitation of these organisms for commercial and other practical purposes is also assessed. Accounts are provided of nuisances as well as the ecology of the commercially successful Spirulina and the role of cyanobacteria in ecosystem recovery from oil pollution. Many chapters include aspects of physiology, biochemistry, geochemistry and molecular biology where these help general understanding of the subject. In addition there are three chapters dealing specifically with molecular ecology. Thirty-two pages of colour photos incorporate about seventy views and light micrographs. These features make the book valuable to a wide readership, including biologists, microbiologists, geologists, water managers and environmental consultants. The book complements the highly successful The Molecular Biology of Cyanobacteria already published by Kluwer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This much revised and expanded edition provides a valuable and detailed summary of the many uses of diatoms in a wide range of applications in the environmental and earth sciences. Particular emphasis is placed on the use of diatoms in analysing ecological problems related to climate change, acidification, eutrophication, and other pollution issues. The chapters are divided into sections for easy reference, with separate sections covering indicators in different aquatic environments. A final section explores diatom use in other fields of study such as forensics, oil and gas exploration, nanotechnology, and archaeology. Sixteen new chapters have been added since the first edition, including introductory chapters on diatom biology and the numerical approaches used by diatomists. The extensive glossary has also been expanded and now includes over 1,000 detailed entries, which will help non-specialists to use the book effectively.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freshwater algae are among the most diverse and ubiquitous organisms on earth. They occupy an enormous range of ecological conditions from lakes and rivers to acidic peat swamps, inland saline lakes, snow and ice, damp soils, wetlands, desert soils, wastewater treatment plants, and are symbionts in and on many plants, fungi, and animals. In North America, the variety of freshwater habitats colonized by algae is very rich, and offers an enormous and fascinating range of environments for their study. They form the base of most aquatic food webs and are critical to studies of ecosystem health. Algal ecologists and taxonomists play an important role in the understanding of aquatic ecosystems: their biodiversity, productivity, interactions with other organisms, and water quality. This book provides in one volume a practical and comprehensive guide to the genera of freshwater algae known from North America. The format combines the necessary ecological, taxonomic and methodological information for all scientists working in aquatic environments, whether their specialty is in environmental monitoring and water quality assessment, biological composition, ecology, evolution, or molecular biology.Key Features* The first complete accounting of North America's freshwater algal genera in more than 50 years* Includes a guide to the current literature on species identification in each group of algae* High-quality photographs and drawings of more than 770 genera* A clear, easy-to-use introductory key to the diagnostic chapters* Synthetic chapters on freshwater habitats, use of algae in environmental assessment, and control of nuisance algae* Contributions from 27 experts in all areas of freshwater algae* Extensive literature citations* Companion volume of Ecology and Classification of North American Freshwater Invertebrates 2nd edition, edited by Throp and Covich

This book was released on 2003 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The genus Amphora is one of the larger genera belonging to the family Naviculaceae and includes about 350 taxa. It is a widespread genus with a few species occurring in freshwater and brackish water, and many species in marine habitats. Members of the genus are clearly distinguished from related genera. The characteristic, strongly dorsiventral frustule has raphe systems which lie close to the ventral margins of the valve. There is no taxonomic revision and clear definition of the genus Amphora based modern taxonomic criteria covering both freshwater to marine species. This study deal with the taxonomy the subgenus Amphora, for freshwater and marine species in Japan. In addition to the characters observable by light microscopy, characters revealed mainly by scanning and transmission electron microscopy, such as raphe system and the shape of dorsal marginal costa, were employed to establish the taxonomy of the taxa considerd herein. Eighteen taxa are recognized in this work. First, each taxon was observed in detail using SEM to expand current knowledge of its fine structure. Taxonomic identification was then confirmed with reference to type material or other historic collections. Among the taxa investigated here, four are new to science, one is a new combination and one is a new name. Ten of the taxa investigated here (Amphora barrowiana (Patr. et Freese) Nagumo comb. nov., A. copulata (Kützing) Schoeman et Archibald, A. hiromuii Nagumo sp. nov., A. inariensis Krammer, A. liriope Nagumo sp. nov., A. macedoniensis Nagumo sp. nov., A. ovalis Kützing., A. pediculus (Kützing) Grun., A. rotunda Skv., A. sibirica Skv. et Meyer) are from freshwaters habitats. Three (A. arenicola (Grun.) Cleve, A. javanica Schmidt, A. libyca Ehr.) are from brackish-water habitats and five (A. gigantea Grun., A. immarginata Nagumo sp. nov., A. marina W. Smith, A. plativalvata Nagumo nom. et stat. nov., A. schmidtii Grun.) are from marine habitats.

This book uniquelycombines practical information on sampling and experimentaltechniques with an explanation of basic algal taxonomy plus a keyto identify the more frequently-occurring organisms. Fullyrevised, it describes major bioindicator species in relationto key environmental parameters and their implications for aquaticmanagement. This second edition includes: the same clear writing style as the first edition to provide aneasily accessible source of information on algae within standingand flowing waters, and the problems they may cause the identification of 250 algae using a key based on readilyobservable morphological features that can be readily observedunder a conventional light microscope up-to-date information on the molecular determination of taxonomicstatus, analytical microtechniques and the potential role ofcomputer analysis in algal biology upgrades to numerous line drawings to include more detail and extraspecies information, full colour photographs of live algae –including many new images from the USA and China Bridging the gap between simple identification texts and highlyspecialised research volumes, this book is used both as a comprehensive introduction to the subject and as alaboratory manual. The new edition will be invaluable to aquaticbiologists for algal identification, and for all practitioners andresearchers working within aquatic microbiology in industry andacademia.
