Book excerpt: These are proceedings of an International Conference on Algebraic Topology, held 28 July through 1 August, 1986, at Arcata, California. The conference served in part to mark the 25th anniversary of the journal Topology and 60th birthday of Edgar H. Brown. It preceded ICM 86 in Berkeley, and was conceived as a successor to the Aarhus conferences of 1978 and 1982. Some thirty papers are included in this volume, mostly at a research level. Subjects include cyclic homology, H-spaces, transformation groups, real and rational homotopy theory, acyclic manifolds, the homotopy theory of classifying spaces, instantons and loop spaces, and complex bordism.

Download or read book Algebraic Topology. Seattle 1985 written by Haynes R. Miller and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-11-15 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Winter and spring of 1985 a Workshop in Algebraic Topology was held at the University of Washington. The course notes by Emmanuel Dror Farjoun and by Frederick R. Cohen contained in this volume are carefully written graduate level expositions of certain aspects of equivariant homotopy theory and classical homotopy theory, respectively. M.E. Mahowald has included some of the material from his further papers, represent a wide range of contemporary homotopy theory: the Kervaire invariant, stable splitting theorems, computer calculation of unstable homotopy groups, and studies of L(n), Im J, and the symmetric groups.

Book Synopsis Polynomials and the mod 2 Steenrod Algebra by : Grant Walker (Mathematician)
Download or read book Polynomials and the mod 2 Steenrod Algebra written by Grant Walker (Mathematician) and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to link the mod 2 Steenrod algebra, a classical object of study in algebraic topology, with modular representations of matrix groups over the field F of two elements. The link is provided through a detailed study of Peterson's 'hit problem' concerning the action of the Steenrod algebra on polynomials, which remains unsolved except in special cases. The topics range from decompositions of integers as sums of 'powers of 2 minus 1', to Hopf algebras and the Steinberg representation of GL(n,F). Volume 1 develops the structure of the Steenrod algebra from an algebraic viewpoint and can be used as a graduate-level textbook. Volume 2 broadens the discussion to include modular representations of matrix groups.

Book Synopsis Tel Aviv Topology Conference: Rothenberg Festschrift by : Melvin Rothenberg
Download or read book Tel Aviv Topology Conference: Rothenberg Festschrift written by Melvin Rothenberg and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1999 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the proceedings of the Tel Aviv International Topology Conference held during the Special Topology Program at Tel Aviv University. The book is dedicated to Professor Mel Rothenberg on the occasion of his 65th birthday. His contributions to topology are well known-from the early work on triangulations to numerous papers on transformation groups and on geometric and analytic aspects of torsion theory. Current research related to those contributions are reported in this book. Coverage is included on the following topics: vanishing theorems for the Dirac operator, the theory of Reidemeister torsion (including infinite dimensional flat bundles), Nobikov-Shubin invariants of manifolds, topology of group actions, Lusternik-Schnirelman theory for closed 1-forms, finite type invariants of links and 3-manifolds, equivariant cobordisms, equivariant orientations and Thom isomorphisms, and more.

Book Synopsis Surveys on Surgery Theory (AM-149), Volume 2 by : Sylvain Cappell
Download or read book Surveys on Surgery Theory (AM-149), Volume 2 written by Sylvain Cappell and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-09-08 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surgery theory, the basis for the classification theory of manifolds, is now about forty years old. The sixtieth birthday (on December 14, 1996) of C.T.C. Wall, a leading member of the subject's founding generation, led the editors of this volume to reflect on the extraordinary accomplishments of surgery theory as well as its current enormously varied interactions with algebra, analysis, and geometry. Workers in many of these areas have often lamented the lack of a single source surveying surgery theory and its applications. Because no one person could write such a survey, the editors asked a variety of experts to report on the areas of current interest. This is the second of two volumes resulting from that collective effort. It will be useful to topologists, to other interested researchers, and to advanced students. The topics covered include current applications of surgery, Wall's finiteness obstruction, algebraic surgery, automorphisms and embeddings of manifolds, surgery theoretic methods for the study of group actions and stratified spaces, metrics of positive scalar curvature, and surgery in dimension four. In addition to the editors, the contributors are S. Ferry, M. Weiss, B. Williams, T. Goodwillie, J. Klein, S. Weinberger, B. Hughes, S. Stolz, R. Kirby, L. Taylor, and F. Quinn.

Book Synopsis Invariant Theory of Finite Groups by : Mara D. Neusel
Download or read book Invariant Theory of Finite Groups written by Mara D. Neusel and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2010-03-08 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The questions that have been at the center of invariant theory since the 19th century have revolved around the following themes: finiteness, computation, and special classes of invariants. This book begins with a survey of many concrete examples chosen from these themes in the algebraic, homological, and combinatorial context. In further chapters, the authors pick one or the other of these questions as a departure point and present the known answers, open problems, and methods and tools needed to obtain these answers. Chapter 2 deals with algebraic finiteness. Chapter 3 deals with combinatorial finiteness. Chapter 4 presents Noetherian finiteness. Chapter 5 addresses homological finiteness. Chapter 6 presents special classes of invariants, which deal with modular invariant theory and its particular problems and features. Chapter 7 collects results for special classes of invariants and coinvariants such as (pseudo) reflection groups and representations of low degree. If the ground field is finite, additional problems appear and are compensated for in part by the emergence of new tools. One of these is the Steenrod algebra, which the authors introduce in Chapter 8 to solve the inverse invariant theory problem, around which the authors have organized the last three chapters. The book contains numerous examples to illustrate the theory, often of more than passing interest, and an appendix on commutative graded algebra, which provides some of the required basic background. There is an extensive reference list to provide the reader with orientation to the vast literature.

Book Synopsis Algebraic Homotopy by : Hans J. Baues
Download or read book Algebraic Homotopy written by Hans J. Baues and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1989-02-16 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives a general outlook on homotopy theory; fundamental concepts, such as homotopy groups and spectral sequences, are developed from a few axioms and are thus available in a broad variety of contexts. Many examples and applications in topology and algebra are discussed, including an introduction to rational homotopy theory in terms of both differential Lie algebras and De Rham algebras. The author describes powerful tools for homotopy classification problems, particularly for the classification of homotopy types and for the computation of the group homotopy equivalences. Applications and examples of such computations are given, including when the fundamental group is non-trivial. Moreover, the deep connection between the homotopy classification problems and the cohomology theory of small categories is demonstrated. The prerequisites of the book are few: elementary topology and algebra. Consequently, this account will be valuable for non-specialists and experts alike. It is an important supplement to the standard presentations of algebraic topology, homotopy theory, category theory and homological algebra.
