Book excerpt: From 1-4 April 1986 a Symposium on Algebraic Groups was held at the University of Utrecht, The Netherlands, in celebration of the 350th birthday of the University and the 60th of T.A. Springer. Recognized leaders in the field of algebraic groups and related areas gave lectures which covered wide and central areas of mathematics. Though the fourteen papers in this volume are mostly original research contributions, some survey articles are included. Centering on the Symposium subject, such diverse topics are covered as Discrete Subgroups of Lie Groups, Invariant Theory, D-modules, Lie Algebras, Special Functions, Group Actions on Varieties.

Book Synopsis Algebraic Topology by : Gunnar Carlsson

Book excerpt: These are proceedings of an International Conference on Algebraic Topology, held 28 July through 1 August, 1986, at Arcata, California. The conference served in part to mark the 25th anniversary of the journal Topology and 60th birthday of Edgar H. Brown. It preceded ICM 86 in Berkeley, and was conceived as a successor to the Aarhus conferences of 1978 and 1982. Some thirty papers are included in this volume, mostly at a research level. Subjects include cyclic homology, H-spaces, transformation groups, real and rational homotopy theory, acyclic manifolds, the homotopy theory of classifying spaces, instantons and loop spaces, and complex bordism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the subject of Groups of Self-Equivalences was first discussed in 1958 in a paper of Barcuss and Barratt, a good deal of progress has been achieved. This is reviewed in this volume, first by a long survey article and a presentation of 17 open problems together with a bibliography of the subject, and by a further 14 original research articles.
Book Synopsis Topology and Combinatorial Group Theory by : Paul Latiolais
Download or read book Topology and Combinatorial Group Theory written by Paul Latiolais and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-11-14 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book demonstrates the lively interaction between algebraic topology, very low dimensional topology and combinatorial group theory. Many of the ideas presented are still in their infancy, and it is hoped that the work here will spur others to new and exciting developments. Among the many techniques disussed are the use of obstruction groups to distinguish certain exact sequences and several graph theoretic techniques with applications to the theory of groups.
Book Synopsis Fourier Transforms of Invariant Functions on Finite Reductive Lie Algebras by : Emmanuel Letellier
Download or read book Fourier Transforms of Invariant Functions on Finite Reductive Lie Algebras written by Emmanuel Letellier and published by Springer. This book was released on 2004-11-15 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fourier transforms of invariant functions on finite reductive Lie algebras are due to T.A. Springer (1976) in connection with the geometry of nilpotent orbits. In this book the author studies Fourier transforms using Deligne-Lusztig induction and the Lie algebra version of Lusztig’s character sheaves theory. He conjectures a commutation formula between Deligne-Lusztig induction and Fourier transforms that he proves in many cases. As an application the computation of the values of the trigonometric sums (on reductive Lie algebras) is shown to reduce to the computation of the generalized Green functions and to the computation of some fourth roots of unity.
Book Synopsis Topological Methods in Algebraic Transformation Groups by : Kraft
Download or read book Topological Methods in Algebraic Transformation Groups written by Kraft and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, there has been increasing interest and activity in the area of group actions on affine and projective algebraic varieties. Tech niques from various branches of mathematics have been important for this study, especially those coming from the well-developed theory of smooth compact transformation groups. It was timely to have an interdisciplinary meeting on these topics. We organized the conference "Topological Methods in Alg~braic Transformation Groups," which was held at Rutgers University, 4-8 April, 1988. Our aim was to facilitate an exchange of ideas and techniques among mathematicians studying compact smooth transformation groups, alge braic transformation groups and related issues in algebraic and analytic geometry. The meeting was well attended, and these Proceedings offer a larger audience the opportunity to benefit from the excellent survey and specialized talks presented. The main topics concerned various as pects of group actions, algebraic quotients, homogeneous spaces and their compactifications. The meeting was made possible by support from Rutgers University and the National Science Foundation. We express our deep appreciation for this support. We also thank Annette Neuen for her assistance with the technical preparation of these Proceedings.
