Book excerpt: The book presets a detail account of algae of Chilika Lake, the largest brackish water lagoon in Asia, in the East coast of India. The algal forms of the lake were collected during the year 1999 to 2001, documented with microphotograph and camera lucida diagrams and identified by us. The taxonomic account of these algal forms has also been prepared. Besides the documentation of algal forms, resource mapping and biomass estimation of economically important algal species in different salinity gradients of the lake was carried out for the first time and presented in this book. Viable protocol for agar-agar extraction from Gracilaria verrucosa occurring in the lake and its possible commercial exploitation is also given. Details of algal forms presented in this book with descriptions, photographs, line diagrams and site of occurrence in Chilika lake can be used as a monograph for future study of algal diversity changes in Chilika lake and other wetlands elsewhere. Contents Chapter 1: Chilika Lake and its Biodiversity; General features of Chilika lake, Origin and history of the lagoon, Importance of Chilika lake, Chilika lake as a Ramsar site, Hydrology and water quality, Climate, Problems encountered by the lake, Biodiversity of Chilika lake, Biodiversity of marine algae in the brackish water lakes, estuaries and coastal regions of India; Chapter 2: Algal Flora of Chilika Lake; The study sites, Collection, observation and identification, Systematic account of algae of Chilika lake; Chapter 3: Algal Biomass of Chilika Lake at Different Salinity Gradient; Physico-chemical characteristics of water, Biomass of macro-algae of Chilika lake, Biomass of phytoplankton of Chilika lake; Chapter 4: Agar Yield of Gracilaria verrucosa at Different Salinity Gradients of Chilika Lake, Pre-treatment of the material, Extraction of agar, Yield of agar, Gelling temperature, Melting temperature, Gel strength, Estimation of 3,6-anhydrogalactose, Estimation of sulphate contents in agar.

It is used for various purposes like drinking, irrigation, transport, sanitation, power generation and industries. Water is the most important and essential abiotic factor of all kinds of ecosystem and it also forms the habitat for enormous varieties of organisms. In other words, water forms the largest ecosystem, that is aquatic ecosystem of the biosphere. Global water is broadly classified into two classes viz fresh water and salt water. Fresh water present in lentic and lotic form. The rise and fall in chemical and physical factors of water bodies frequently affect the flora & fauna, alternating their number and diversity. About 97% of earths water is ocean water. It is saline and not useful for drinking and irrigation. Rest of 02% is in the form of ice at Polar Regions.

Book excerpt: Key Features The most comprehensive resource available on the biodiversity of algal species, their industrial production processes and their use for human consumption in food, health and varied applications. Emphasis on basic and applied research, addressing aspects of scale-up for commercial exploitation for the development of novel phytochemicals (phytochemicals from algae). Addresses the underexplored and underutilized potential of chemicals from marine sources for health benefits. Each chapter, written by expert contributors from around the world, includes a Dictionary of Terms, Key Facts, Summary Points, Figures and Tables, as well as up-to-date references. The second book in this two-volume set explores phycoremedation applications, and the sustainable use of algae for biofuels and other products of economic value. It also looks at aspects such as macro- and micro algal impact on marine ecosystem and remote sensing of algal blooms. The commercial value of chemicals of value to food and health is about $6 billion annually, of which 30 percent relates to micro and macro algal metabolites and products for health food applications. As a whole, the two volumes explore the aspects of diversity of micro and macro algal forms, their traditional uses; their constituents which are of value for food, feed, specialty chemicals, bioactive compounds for novel applications, and bioenergy molecules. Bio-business and the market share of algae-based products are also dealt with, providing global perspectives.

Book excerpt: The land degradation due to salinity and waterlogging is a global phenomenon, afflicting about one billion hectares within the sovereign borders of at least 75 countries. Besides staring at the food security, it has far reaching and unacceptable socio-economic consequences since a large proportion of this land is inhabited by smallholder farmers. The anthropogenic-environmental changes and the climate change are further adding to the problem of salinity and waterlogging. The phenomenon of sea-level rise will bring more areas under waterlogged salinity due to inundation by sea water. Thus, dealing with the salinity in reality is becoming a highly onerous task owing to its complex nature, uncertainty and differential temporal and spatial impacts. Nevertheless, with the need to provide more food, feed, fuel, fodder and fiber to the expanding population, and non-availability of new productive land, there is a need for productivity enhancement of these lands. In fact, the salt-affected and waterlogged lands cannot be neglected since huge investments have been made throughout the world in the development of irrigation and drainage infrastructure. The social, economic and environmental costs being high for theon-and/off-farm reclamation techniques, saline agriculture including agroforestry inculcated with modern innovative techniques, is now emerging as a potential tool not only for arresting salinity and waterlogging but for other environmental services like mitigate climate change, sequester carbon and biodiversity restoration. This publication attempts to address a wide range of issues, principles and practices related to the salinity involved in rehabilitation of waterlogged saline soils and judicious use of saline waters including sea water. Many of the site specific case studies typical to the saline environment including coastal ecologies sustaining productivity, rendering environmental services, conserving biodiversity and mitigating climate change have been described in detail. Written by leading researchers and experts of their own fields, the book is a must, not only for salinity experts but also for policy makers, environmentalists, students and educationists alike. More importantly, it contributes to reversing the salinity trends and teaches to sustain with salinity ensuring the livelihood of resource-poor farming families leaving in harsh ecologies including coastal areas which are more vulnerable to climate change.

Book excerpt: This is the first monograph of its kind to identify the microalgal species present in Dal Lake of Kashmir, India. It studies the algal diversity of the lake through the latest digital microphotography and advanced software. It presents a comprehensive morphological and taxonomic description of the algal flora supported by authentic literature for the benefit of researchers, students, biologists and others interested in environmental sciences and phycology science. The book also includes 43 plates offering more than 200 coloured photographs of algal species, and this extensive analysis of the algal flora of Dal Lake will serve to stimulate interest in phycological sciences both locally and at a global level. A further interesting facet of the book is its presentation of the seasonal and locational distribution of each algal species and its consideration of the role of different researchers regarding the biological diversity of fresh water algal species.
