It is used for various purposes like drinking, irrigation, transport, sanitation, power generation and industries. Water is the most important and essential abiotic factor of all kinds of ecosystem and it also forms the habitat for enormous varieties of organisms. In other words, water forms the largest ecosystem, that is aquatic ecosystem of the biosphere. Global water is broadly classified into two classes viz fresh water and salt water. Fresh water present in lentic and lotic form. The rise and fall in chemical and physical factors of water bodies frequently affect the flora & fauna, alternating their number and diversity. About 97% of earths water is ocean water. It is saline and not useful for drinking and irrigation. Rest of 02% is in the form of ice at Polar Regions.

Book excerpt: The book presets a detail account of algae of Chilika Lake, the largest brackish water lagoon in Asia, in the East coast of India. The algal forms of the lake were collected during the year 1999 to 2001, documented with microphotograph and camera lucida diagrams and identified by us. The taxonomic account of these algal forms has also been prepared. Besides the documentation of algal forms, resource mapping and biomass estimation of economically important algal species in different salinity gradients of the lake was carried out for the first time and presented in this book. Viable protocol for agar-agar extraction from Gracilaria verrucosa occurring in the lake and its possible commercial exploitation is also given. Details of algal forms presented in this book with descriptions, photographs, line diagrams and site of occurrence in Chilika lake can be used as a monograph for future study of algal diversity changes in Chilika lake and other wetlands elsewhere. Contents Chapter 1: Chilika Lake and its Biodiversity; General features of Chilika lake, Origin and history of the lagoon, Importance of Chilika lake, Chilika lake as a Ramsar site, Hydrology and water quality, Climate, Problems encountered by the lake, Biodiversity of Chilika lake, Biodiversity of marine algae in the brackish water lakes, estuaries and coastal regions of India; Chapter 2: Algal Flora of Chilika Lake; The study sites, Collection, observation and identification, Systematic account of algae of Chilika lake; Chapter 3: Algal Biomass of Chilika Lake at Different Salinity Gradient; Physico-chemical characteristics of water, Biomass of macro-algae of Chilika lake, Biomass of phytoplankton of Chilika lake; Chapter 4: Agar Yield of Gracilaria verrucosa at Different Salinity Gradients of Chilika Lake, Pre-treatment of the material, Extraction of agar, Yield of agar, Gelling temperature, Melting temperature, Gel strength, Estimation of 3,6-anhydrogalactose, Estimation of sulphate contents in agar.

It has unique parameter of dissolving and carrying in suspension a huge variety of chemicals. Thus water is the “elixir” of life. Modern civilization is dependent on water for irrigation, industry, domestic needs, shipping and of increasing importance for sanitation and disposal of waste. 75 percent of the surface of the earth is covered with salt water and fresh water. It is present in water bodies such as ocean, ponds, dams, lakes, streams, rivers, mountains with ice-caps etc. About 97 percent of earth’s water is found in ocean, 2 percent is frozen as ice in pole and remaining 1 percent is available to us in the form of fresh water in as rivers, streams, lakes, ponds and ground water.

Book excerpt: The mangrove ecosystem in Indian Sundarbans has great role in the estuarine fish production and sustenance of large number of aquatic, amphibious and terrestrial forms of living organisms; this is because an ideal mangrove habitat releases more than 6,000 tons litter (on dry weight basis per hectare per annum) and this huge volume of organic matter after mineralisation or after complete decomposition releases nutrients to the estuarine, in shore and off shore water and the soil phases, as well. As such, the soil and water in the estuaries and delta regions dominated with dense mangrove vegetation are considered as one of the most nutrient rich and productive areas among the tropical forest zones. The Sundarbans, dominated with large number of mangrove associated and major and minor mangle species along with vast number of aqua-terrestrial mangrove habitat faunal assemblage are categorized as the World Heritage Site , by IUCN and UNESCO (1984). It is worth mentioning that the uniqueness of the mangrove ecosystem along with its rich productive nature is governed mostly by large number of micro- and macro-organisms but the algae play a very dominant role as primary producer group of organisms both in the aquatic as well as the terrestrial habitats. In this mangrove habitat the algal species in the form of planktonic, benthic and periphytic green vegetation were overlooked and less mentioned for its small to tiny structures and ocassionally invisible to open eyes, but their impact and importance are very interacting, important and high scientific value to investigate. These algal species in the salt dominated estuarine water of delta forest lands are somehow different in their identity from fresh water species but have played the most important role by trapping the solar energy and inorganic substances of the sea water and salty soil, consequently transforming them into important food for the consumer group of aqua - terrestrial fauna of this estuarine - delta sea land interphase zone. For all these reasons it is important to collect and identify the different algal flora of this less explored mangrove habitats of Indian Sundarbans and finding out their direct and indirect use as fish food and the enhancement of fishery activities for enrichment in knowledge of science and identifying their impact on fishery development is imperative. Taking, these propositions as priority areas exploration, identification and estimation of the nutrient value of dominant algal flora of Sundarbans have been carried out and based on the field and laboratory studies the collected information and data are highlighted in the book. Contents Chapter 1: Introduction, Chapter 2: Geology and Geography of Indian Sundarbans, Chapter 3: Factors Governing Habitats of Algae, Chapter 4: Phycological Studies: India and Bangladesh, Chapter 5: Field and Laboratory Methodologies for the Investigations of Algae, Chapter 6: Taxonomy and Morphology, Chapter 7: Ecology, Chapter 8: Applied Phycology.

Book excerpt: Phytorestoration of Abandoned Mining and Oil Drilling Sites presents case studies and the latest research on the most effective methods to address the large amounts of waste materials released due to mining and oil drilling. In particular, phytoremediation is described as a novel, eco-friendly, cost-effective method for extracting toxic compounds by plants for the restoration of contaminated sites. Plantings on these contaminated areas lead to the removal of toxic substances such as heavy metals and hydrocarbons, improvement in the physicochemical and biological properties of the soil, long-term forest ecosystem rehabilitation, restoration of ecosystem productivity, stability and biological diversity, and reductions in CO2. Utilizing worldwide examples, this book discusses the potential of phytoremediation as an ideal solution for sites contaminated by mining and oil drilling sites. Includes exploration of efficient plants for restoring contaminated former mining and oil drilling sites Addresses adverse impacts of toxicants released from mining activities on living organisms, including human health Presents characteristics of contaminated former mining and oil drilling sites
