Book Synopsis Mr. Lincoln Goes to War by : William Marvel
Download or read book Mr. Lincoln Goes to War written by William Marvel and published by HMH. This book was released on 2006-05-10 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An account of how America’s greatest crisis began, by “the Civil War’s master historical detective” (Stephen W. Sears, author of Chancellorsville). This groundbreaking book investigates the mystery of how the Civil War began, reconsidering the big question: Was it inevitable? The award-winning author of Andersonville and Lincoln’s Autocrat vividly recreates President Abraham Lincoln’s first year in office, from his inauguration through the rising crisis of secession and the first several months of the war. Drawing on original sources and examining previously overlooked factors, he leads the reader inexorably to the conclusion that Lincoln not only missed opportunities to avoid war but actually fanned the flames—and often acted unconstitutionally in prosecuting the war once it had begun. With a keen eye for the telling detail, on the battlefield as well as in the White House, this is revisionist history at its best, not sparing anyone, even Abraham Lincoln. “A brilliant narrative that reveals the possibilities of the past that were squandered by historical figures who seem so unassailable and godlike to us today.” —Peter S. Carmichael, author of The Last Generation “The most provocative account of events in 1861 in a generation. Readers who think they understand the Civil War’s first year and the roles played by Abraham Lincoln, Nathanial Lyon, Charles Stone, and a host of others should brace themselves for a bold new perspective.” —A. Wilson Greene, author of Breaking the Backbone of the Rebellion

Download or read book Grave History written by Kami Fletcher and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2023-12-15 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grave sites not only offer the contemporary viewer the physical markers of those remembered but also a wealth of information about the era in which the cemeteries were created. These markers hold keys to our historical past and allow an entry point of interrogation about who is represented, as well as how and why. Grave History is the first volume to use southern cemeteries to interrogate and analyze southern society and the construction of racial and gendered hierarchies from the antebellum period through the dismantling of Jim Crow. Through an analysis of cemeteries throughout the South-including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, and Virginia, from the nineteenth through twenty-first centuries-this volume demonstrates the importance of using the cemetery as an analytical tool for examining power relations, community formation, and historical memory. Grave History draws together an interdisciplinary group of scholars, including historians, anthropologists, archaeologists, and social-justice activists to investigate the history of racial segregation in southern cemeteries and what it can tell us about how ideas regarding race, class, and gender were informed and reinforced in these sacred spaces. Each chapter is followed by a learning activity that offers readers an opportunity to do the work of a historian and apply the insights gleaned from this book to their own analysis of cemeteries. These activities, designed for both the teacher and the student, as well as the seasoned and the novice cemetery enthusiast, encourage readers to examine cemeteries for their physical organization, iconography, sociodemographic landscape, and identity politics.

Download or read book Colonel Albert Pope and His American Dream Machines written by Stephen B. Goddard and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1890s Colonel Albert A. Pope was hailed as a leading American automaker. That his name is not a household word today is the very essence of his story. Pope's production methods as the world's largest manufacturer of bicycles led to the building of automobiles with lightweight metals, rubber tires, precision machining, interchangeable parts, and vertical integration. The founder of the Good Roads Movement, Pope entered automobile manufacturing while steam, electricity, and gasoline power were still vying for supremacy. The story of his failed dream of dominating U.S. automobile production is an engrossing view into America's industrial history.

Book Synopsis An Archaeology of Australia Since 1788 by : Susan Lawrence
Download or read book An Archaeology of Australia Since 1788 written by Susan Lawrence and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-10-21 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides an important new synthesis of archaeological work carried out in Australia on the post-contact period. It draws on dozens of case studies from a wide geographical and temporal span to explore the daily life of Australians in settings such as convict stations, goldfields, whalers' camps, farms, pastoral estates and urban neighbourhoods. The different conditions experienced by various groups of people are described in detail, including rich and poor, convicts and their superiors, Aboriginal people, women, children, and migrant groups. The social themes of gender, class, ethnicity, status and identity inform every chapter, demonstrating that these are vital parts of human experience, and cannot be separated from archaeologies of industry, urbanization and culture contact. The book engages with a wide range of contemporary discussions and debates within Australian history and the international discipline of historical archaeology. The colonization of Australia was part of the international expansion of European hegemony in the eighteenth and nineteenth century. The material discussed here is thus fundamentally part of the global processes of colonization and the creation of settler societies, the industrial revolution, the development of mass consumer culture, and the emergence of national identities. Drawing out these themes and integrating them with the analysis of archaeological materials highlights the vital relevance of archaeology in modern society.
Book Synopsis Tombstone Inscriptions - Orange and Alamance Counties - N.C. by : Stewart Dunaway
Download or read book Tombstone Inscriptions - Orange and Alamance Counties - N.C. written by Stewart Dunaway and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-10-04 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Durward T. Stokes of Alamance Co. surveyed a number of abandoned or lost cemeteries - primarily in Alamance County, but moved around crossing into Orange, Chatham, and Randolph Counties. His manuscript was typed in 1979, but never published. His actual surveys occurred in 1958-9. This was fortunate, since a number of these locations are gone - and the old tombstones are not getting better (visually) with age. Therefore, I as editor, retyped his manuscript - and added historical remarks (where helpful), pictures I took in modern times, and a detailed index. Durward had some B&W pictures - which are included in this book as well.Lastly, there are two graveyards that I found, that Durward was not aware of - included with pictures and maps in an Appendix.
