Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Warton's Essay on the Genius and Writings of Pope was one of the most influential critical works of the eighteenth century. Warton's sustained commentary on the most significant English poet of the century was read as both a promotion of Pope's literary genius, and an attack on it, and as such attracted strong opinion. At the same time its comparative critical method, drawing upon the important cultural and political events of the eighteenth century, provided a highly influential critical and creative model. This three-volume set reprints Joseph Warton's An Essay on the Genius and Writings of Pope (in two volumes), along with other responses to Pope (and Warton). The collection brings together significant documents both in the formation of eighteenth-century opinion of Pope and in the development of eighteenth century criticism. A new introduction by the editor, and an appendix discussing the revisions between editions of Warton's Essay will give the set extra value to the researcher.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alexander Pope (1688-1744) was the most important English poet of the 18th century, as well as an essayist, satirist, and critic. Many of his sayings are still quoted today. His Essay on Criticism shaped the aesthetic views of English Neoclassicism, while his Essay on Man reflected the moral views of the Enlightenment. He participated fully in the critical debates of his time and was one of the few poets who supported himself through his writing. This reference conveniently summarizes his life and works. Included are several-hundred alphabetically arranged entries on Pope's works, subjects that interested him, historical events that impacted Pope's life and work, cultural terms and categories, Pope's family members and acquaintances, major scholars and critics, and various other topics related to his writings. The entries reflect current scholarship and cite works for further reading. The encyclopedia also provides a chronology and concludes with a selected, general bibliography. Because of Pope's central importance to the Enlightenment, this book is also a useful companion to 18th-century literary and intellectual culture.

Book excerpt: How is this book unique? Font adjustments & biography included Unabridged (100% Original content) Illustrated About An Essay on Criticism By Alexander Pope An Essay on Criticism was the first major poem written by the English writer Alexander Pope (1688-1744). However, despite the title, the poem is not as much an original analysis as it is a compilation of Pope's various literary opinions. A reading of the poem makes it clear that he is addressing not so much the ingenuous reader as the intending writer. It is written in a type of rhyming verse called heroic couplets. The poem first appeared in 1711, but was written in 1709. It is clear from Pope's correspondence that many of the poems ideas had existed in prose form since at least 1706. It is a verse essay written in the Horatian mode and is primarily concerned with how writers and critics behave in the new literary commerce of Pope's contemporary age. The poem covers a range of good criticism and advice. It also represents many of the chief literary ideals of Pope's age. Pope contends in the poem's opening couplets that bad criticism does greater harm than bad writing: 'Tis hard to say, if greater Want of Skill Appear in Writing or in Judging ill, But, of the two, less dang'rous is th' Offence, To tire our Patience, than mis-lead our Sense: Some few in that, but Numbers err in this, Ten Censure wrong for one who Writes amiss; A Fool might once himself alone expose, Now One in Verse makes many more in Prose.
