What apparently started with the malicious drowning of a neighbor’s kitten, has grown into a spine-tingling tale of the kitten’s survival and the horror of it growing into a monster cat that lives in the swampy waters of the local sandpit. However, Alex’s friends (and his parents) don’t believe this horrifying story is true. Alex, on the other hand, figure out there really is a monster. But no one believes him, even after the mysterious disappearance of a dog and one of the local boys. Not realizing that he could become the monster’s next meal, Alex goes to the sandpit at night with nothing more than his camera. He is determined to get a picture of the kitten monster to prove that he is right. He ends up riding a roller coaster of mystery, suspense, and terror as Alex faces the most horrifying experience of his young life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nathan Ballingrud's Shirley Jackson Award winning debut collection is a shattering and luminous experience not to be missed by those who love to explore the darker parts of the human psyche. Monsters, real and imagined, external and internal, are the subject. They are us and we are them and Ballingrud's intense focus makes these stories incredibly intense and irresistible. These are love stories. And also monster stories. Sometimes these are monsters in their traditional guises, sometimes they wear the faces of parents, lovers, or ourselves. The often working-class people in these stories are driven to extremes by love. Sometimes, they are ruined; sometimes redeemed. All are faced with the loneliest corners of themselves and strive to find an escape. Nathan Ballingrud was born in Massachusetts but has spent most of his life in the South. He worked as a bartender in New Orleans and New York City and a cook on offshore oil rigs. His story "The Monsters of Heaven" won the inaugural Shirley Jackson Award. He lives in Asheville, North Carolina, with his daughter.

Book excerpt: The story of the monsters involves two brother cats Collins the elder brother and Peter. Peter was a very naive cat who always depended on his brother Collins for protection. He could not go anywhere without Collins. One day as they were taking a walk they met a female cat called Bobby whom they were very afraid of. The cat scared them when he spoke to a monster. Peter was very afraid of monsters. So as they walked round the garden in the neighborhood, Collins was kidnapped by the monster and Peter was left alone. He was very worried and started searching for Collins without success. Suddenly, Peter decided to seek help from the female cat who he was afraid of. He had to put his fears aside and approach bobby for help. So as they searched for Collins together with another friend, eventually both Bobby and his friend were kidnapped by the monsters and Peter is left with nobody to help him. He had learnt so much since Collins was kidnapped and he was now brave to search for his brother and his friends. We walked to the woods of the monsters and when he got there, the big monster tried to threaten him but he was not afraid. He confronted the monster and eventually rescued his brother Collins and his friends. They walked back to their garden happily and Collins was happy that his brother had become a brave cat. The story gives children the courage to face the world and overcome fears. Some children depend entirely on their parents or older people for help and when they encounter a problem on their own, they cannot handle it. We learn from Peter that nothing is impossible and our fears can make us stronger and fearless. It is all about building confidence in us.

When two trouble-free country boys end up in the hospital due to an almost catastrophic event, Alex's harsh past comes back to haunt him. His whole life had been a fabrication that his foster aunt and uncle invented to keep his past a secret from him and the rest of the world. After being told that he is not human and awaiting an estranged visitor that can help shed light on his shattered reality, Young Alex must face what fate has in store for him and deal with his new life one day at a time. With a three thousand year old prophesy foretelling his birth and of his importance, Alex and his foster family must overcome the evils that have tracked him after sixteen long years. Now, plunged into a realm of multiple dimensions and surreal beings, Alex must decide if he is to become Earth's savior, destroyer, or try to return to his fictitiously normal life with one consequence: that if he does nothing, then in less than three years, his world could come to an end regardless. What would you do if the lives of everyone you loved were placed on your shoulders? Lucky for you, that has not happened; we can only hope Alex makes the right choices.
