Book excerpt: Solubility Data Series, Volume 15: Alcohols with Water is part of a series of books that provides a critical and comprehensive evaluation of solubility data on chemical systems. This volume covers only the binary systems that contain water and a monohydroxy alcohol. This book presents precise data on data sheets in a uniform format preceded for each system by a critical evaluation if there are more than one set of data available. For systems where data from different sources agree sufficiently, recommended values are proposed. This volume will be of great use to scientists such as chemists, wh.

This book was released on 1985-02-01 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alcohol is a killerâ€"1 of every 13 deaths in the United States is alcohol-related. In addition, 5 percent of the population consumes 50 percent of the alcohol. The authors take a close look at the problem in a "classy little study," as The Washington Post called this book. The Library Journal states, "...[T]his is one book that addresses solutions....And it's enjoyably readable....This is an excellent review for anyone in the alcoholism prevention business, and good background reading for the interested layperson." The Washington Post agrees: the book "...likely will wind up on the bookshelves of counselors, politicians, judges, medical professionals, and law enforcement officials throughout the country."

Book Synopsis Review of the Research Strategy for Biomass-Derived Transportation Fuels by : National Research Council
Download or read book Review of the Research Strategy for Biomass-Derived Transportation Fuels written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-11-11 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Office of Fuels Development (OFD), a component of the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Office of Transportation Technologies, manages the federal government's effort to make biomass-based ethanol (bioethanol) and biodiesel a practical and affordable alternative to gasoline. Through the National Biomass Ethanol Program, the OFD is overseeing key research and development (R&D) and industry-government partnerships for the establishment of a cellulosic biomass ethanol industry. Cellulosic biomass resources being investigated include agronomic and forest crop residues, woody crops, perennial grasses, and municipal wastes. Starch-based sources, such as cereal grains (e.g., corn grain), are not included in this program. The objective of the program is to promote the commercialization of enzyme-based technologies to produce cost-competitive bioethanol for use as transportation fuel. The OFD requested that the National Research Council estimate the contribution and evaluate the role of biofuels (biomass-derived ethanol and biodiesel) as transportation fuels in the domestic and international economies, evaluate OFD's biofuels strategy, and recommend changes in this strategy and the R&D goals and portfolio of the OFD in the near-term to midterm time frame (about 20 years). During this period, a number of complex, interacting factors, including advances in the technologies used to produce biofuels at a competitive cost, the elimination of tax incentives, advances in vehicle and engine technologies, growing concerns about solid waste disposal and air pollution, and global measures to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere, will affect the position of biofuels in transportation fuel markets.

Book Synopsis Principles and Applications of Resonance Ionisation Spectroscopy, by : George Samuel Hurst
Download or read book Principles and Applications of Resonance Ionisation Spectroscopy, written by George Samuel Hurst and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive treatment of the underlying principles and the practical applications and techniques of resonance ionisation spectroscopy (RIS). The field of RIS was originated and developed by a group at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the USA - a group that was led by the authors. Thus, the book includes a description of the original work on the technique from those directly involved. The main unifying theme is the conception, perfection and application of a laser technique for the selective and sensitive detection of individual atoms. The physical phenomena involved in RIS are discussed, together with the technique's capabilities as an analytical tool with single-atom sensitivity. Detailed information on the photophysics involved in selective and sensitive ionisation of nearly all elements in the Periodic Table is given. The book includes an in-depth description of laser schemes required for practical utilisation of RIS, with emphasis on both broad band width and narrow band width pulsed lasers. The application of RIS to the detection of noble gases such as 81Kr for ice-cap dating and solar neutrino detection is discussed. Applications to the analysis of solids include uses in such fields as impurity detection in semiconductors, medical research, exploration, and particle physics. The book will appeal to postgraduate and professional-level research scientists such as physicists, chemists, and earth scientists. other_titles
