Book Synopsis A Strategic Plan for the Conservation and Restoration of Arctic Grayling in the Williston Reservoir Watershed by :
Download or read book A Strategic Plan for the Conservation and Restoration of Arctic Grayling in the Williston Reservoir Watershed written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arctic grayling were abundant in the upper Peace, Finlay, & Parsnip watersheds of British Columbia before construction of the Bennett Dam and flooding of the Williston Reservoir in 1968. Arctic grayling populations in the Reservoir started to decline in the 1980s and by 1988 most populations in the Reservoir & smaller streams flowing directly into the reservoir had severely declined or disappeared. This document presents a plan that intends to provide a co-ordinated approach to preserve & restore Arctic grayling populations and their habitat within the Williston watershed. The introduction reviews the biology of this species and the possible reasons for the decline in its population. Plan activities are then listed under four strategic objectives: understanding Arctic grayling biology; develop watershed-specific management strategies to conserve & restore native stocks; protect, restore, & manage Arctic grayling habitat; and inform & educate the public. A work plan & time lines are also included.

This book was released on 2014 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wild arctic grayling Thymallus arcticus distribution, life history, and past stock assessment in the Arctic-Yukon-Kuskokwim Region and the Upper Copper/Upper Susitna Management Area are presented. As a basis for this management plan, sport fisheries that target arctic grayling in this geographic area are characterized along with the known growth and population characteristics of the species. Management options are presented that would maintain harvest at sustainable levels, including harvest restrictions and special management areas.

Download or read book Cumulative Effects Thresholds for Arctic Grayling in the Wapiti River Watershed written by Adam Paul Norris and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intensity and types of land use have changed rapidly in the last century and in north-western Alberta this has coincided with the decline of Wapiti River watershed Arctic Grayling (Thymallus arcticus) populations. Data on diurnal dissolved oxygen (DO), chemical and physical stream habitat data were collected in nine sub-watersheds of the Wapiti River with historically abundant Arctic Grayling populations. Levels and fluctuations of DO and temperature were related to the status of populations; five of the nine streams had higher temperatures and lower DO during summer, anoxic conditions during winter and extirpated populations. Amount of disturbed land and road density within sub-watersheds were inversely related to DO levels and population status. Cumulative effects modelling suggests a possible mechanism for these relationships is increased phosphorous runoff, leading to impaired habitat. These relationships and thresholds may be used as a management tool to maintain or restore Arctic Grayling and other stream fishes.
