Book excerpt: “Wonderful romantic suspense . . . took my breath away! Readers of Dee Henderson and Nora Roberts will love it!” —Hannah Alexander, award-winning author USA TODAY bestselling author Colleen Coble brings her signature blend of suspense and romance to the beautiful—and deadly—Alaskan wilderness. “You hide behind your camera instead of stepping out and engaging life with both hands. You're so afraid you'll fail at something, you won't even try.” For some people, Alaska is a breathtaking wilderness adventure, full of light and beauty. For Haley, it is a dangerous world of dark dreams and tortured memories. On the surface, she's here to document wildlife activist Kipp Nowak's bear encounters. But her real reason is to unearth the truth about a past murder. The suspense mounts when another body turns up, and Haley begins to wonder if the tragedies she experienced in the past are connected to the dangers and mysterious incidents of the present. From behind her camera, Haley observes it all, including Tank Lassiter, the wildlife biologist who has been forced to lead Kipp and his team into the Alaskan backcountry. As she watches him with his work, she feels a growing attraction. It will take great courage and faith to confront the truth she once ran away from. Before it's over, Haley may be viewing herself from an entirely new angle. Alaska Twilight is the story of a young woman's emergence from the shadows of past sorrow into the light of forgiveness and grace. “Colleen Coble will keep you glued to each page as she shows you the beauty of God’s most primitive land and the dangers it hides.” —romancejunkies.com “Colleen Coble’s Alaska setting is like an outback adventure without ever leaving the comfort (or warmth) of your own home. The reality will make you feel like there’s a grizzly bear breathing heavily over your peaceful night’s rest. Suspense, romance, and adventure, this one has it all.” —Kristin Billerbeck, author of The Theory of Happily Ever After “Coble . . . takes us on a dangerous trek through the beautiful Alaskan wilderness and introduces us to characters we can’t help but love. A suspenseful tale of murder and romance, Alaska Twilight grabs you by the heart and won’t let go until you finish the last page.” —Denise Hunter, bestselling author of The Convenient Groom and Honeysuckle Dreams

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From his home in remote Eskimo Village, Nick Jans leads us into a vast, magical world: Alaska's Brooks Range. Drawn from fourteen years of arctic experience, The Last Light Breaking offers a rare perspective on America's last great wilderness and its people--the Inupiat Natives, an ancient culture on the cusp of change. Making a poignant connection between the world he describes and the world of the Inupiat once knew, Nick Jans invokes with stunning power, the life of the Eskimos in the harsh arctic and the mystical aura of the wilderness of the far North. With the eye of an outdoorsman and the heart of a poet, Jans weaves together these 23 essays with strands of native American narrative, making vivid a place where wolves and grizzlies still roam free, hunters follow the caribou, and old women cast their nets in the dust as they have for countless generations. But looming on the horizon is the world of roads and modern technology; the future has already arrived in the form of stop signs, computers, and satellite dishes. Jans creates unforgettable images of a proud people facing an uncertain future, and of his own journey through this haunting timeless landscape.

Abruptly, the world's media spotlight begins to shine on the locals and their unique lifestyles. Heightened scrutiny reveals the buzz of both madness and sanity. Book excerpt: Sometime a Clear Light: A Photographer's Journey Through Alaska, Nigeria, and Life Aylette Jenness, writer, photographer, adventurer, looks back at her life to find insight into the past as she is losing her physical sight due to macular degeneration. Aylette reflects on living with her husband and two small children in a tiny Yu'pik village in Alaska in the early 1960s, and on the time they spent in Africa from 1966 to 1969, three of the most terrible years of the Nigerian Civil War (the Nigerian-Biafran War). It was a tumultuous time for Aylette, as well, as she split from her husband, an anthropologist, who had been sent to Nigeria to study resettlement caused by the construction the Kainji Dam. She follows her evolution as a single mother, an author of eleven children's books on diverse cultural groups, and as a self-taught photographer. Her photographs of the Fulani, Sarkawa, Kamberi, and Hausa people of Yelwa, Kainji, and Ibadan, which capture a lost way of life, are now are housed in the "Aylette Jenness Collection" at the Smithsonian's National Musuem of African Art. Aylette Jenness, now 87, looks back into her past in an attempt to find insight - trying to find a clear light.

Caught in the aftermath of the greatest oil spill in Alaska's history, Zak's inner light was nearly smothered as he faced the enormity of the disaster. Unable to reconcile the overwhelming emotions wrought by witnessing the devastation on millions of birds, animals and people, Zak ceased to do little more than exist until meeting the white raven from the heart of Denali. Paired beautifully with the commanding splendor of Alaska and its people, Raven's Light is the tale of Zak's struggle. Set amongst the beauty and people of Alaska's Matanuska Valley, Raven's Light is an intimate glimpse at the journey within that leads to the ultimate serenity of inner peace.
