Book excerpt: By comparing versions of Shakespeare's play in three languages, reveals changing social and political perspectives relating to Jews and stereotypes about them. The histories of the reception of "The Merchant of Venice" reveal continuing reciprocal relations among the three cultures. In Germany the center of the play shifted from Elizabethan romantic comedy to the character of the Jew, who became an important figure in a country involved in determining who was a German and who was an alien. The latter stereotype culminated in the Nazi image of the Jew. Both the Yiddish and Hebrew translations presented counter-images of the Jew, either as a moral foil to immoral Christians or in tragic or heroic opposition to antisemites. In postwar Germany the play has served as a point of departure for discussions about German-Jewish relations in general and the Holocaust in particular.

Book Synopsis Eco-Fearism by : Bhawani Shankar Adhikari
Download or read book Eco-Fearism written by Bhawani Shankar Adhikari and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2020-05-05 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a world full of doubt and despair, we are yet to realize the invaluable importance of societal coherence and correspondence, especially in relation to our planet's ecosystem. Intelligent, empathetic life, such as ourselves, has limitless potential to co-create and edify a new paradigm of smart coexistence, if we manage to get fear under control. The society that we have constructed has undervalued life's potential because of individualistic separatism that seems to have been born out of fear of survival. Our fears of going extinct should be, counter-intuitively enough, not only a motivation for us to thrive in meaningful coexistence, but also an inspiration for us to be able to build a future that is worthy of our true capacities. As we dive deeper into Eco-Fearism, breaking the boundaries of our limitations and striving for excellence, we are enlightened by knowledge and by the hope that we can surpass our own immaturity and take care of ourselves and our planet through careful reflection.

Book Synopsis Interface Between Igbo Theology and Christianity by : Akuma-Kalu Njoku
Download or read book Interface Between Igbo Theology and Christianity written by Akuma-Kalu Njoku and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-10-21 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interface between Igbo Theology and Christianity is a timely book that provides new scholarly thinking concerning the convergence of Christianity and Igbo Traditional Religion taking place in the Igbo culture area. This book, a fruit of multidisciplinary conversation among Igbo scholars and Igbophiles, offers concepts, themes, issues, and case studies with deep ethnographic details, some of which do not exist anywhere else in print. It is a major statement of how modern Igbo scholars, social scientists, philosophers, theologians, liturgists, and active pastors and parish priests, understand the intersection of Igbo Traditional Religion and Christianity in postcolonial Nigeria. The editors and authors of the chapters of this book draw from their wealth of experience to offer to students, scholars, researchers, community-based organizations and NGOs, and practitioners in interfaith dialogue a “must have” manual to engage in and develop mutual respect and trust among Christian denominations and between them and Igbo Traditional Religion. This book will serve as a blueprint for a deep dialogue among the Igbo in both city and rural settings, in the context of clan and community life context and in the Christian parish setting. The book will certainly appeal to numerous communities in Africa wishing to share similar local experiences and collective memories, but which do not have the channels to talk about themselves in scholarly writing.
