Book excerpt: Ellen Brandner, Gisella Ferraresi The strong connection between language change and language acquisition has been known for a long time in traditional linguistics. The neogrammarian Paul wrote in 1920: "Es liegt auf der Hand, daß die Vorgänge der Spracherlernung von der al lergrößten Wichtigkeit für die Erklärung der Veränderung des Sprachusus sind, weil sie die wichtigste Ursache für diese Veränderung abgeben." But what is the reason why a child's grammar differs from that of his or her environ ment? Can we say that there are some principles which govern this change? Many linguists have tried to answer these important questions from different view points. We will sketch he re some of the most interesting ones. Sapir (1921) develops the principle of drift which was meant to describe the laws of diachronic change in linguistic systems. This concerns long-term tendencies of gram matical change, which probably are of universal character but result in one or another effect, according to the specific structure of a given language. The tendencies concerning syntactical change are determined by morphological change; morphological change, for its part, is determined by phonological change. All such instances of change aim at the one and only goal to always provide sufficient means for expressing all those grammatical relations which are necessary to keep up communication.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study deals with variation in grammar both from a theoretical and an empirical point of view. In Part I (Chaps. 1-4), an attempt is made to char acterize this phenomenon within the broader context of what might be called the "fluctuating character of natu'ral language", and to develop suitable and precise descriptive techniques that account for it. The method which is pro posed here is called "variety grammar" - roughly speaking, this is a formal grammar with probabilistic weighting for an ordered set of varieties, such as dialects, sociolects, registers, or developmental stages. In Part II (Chaps. 5-8), this technique is applied to an important area of grammatical variation - to the process of second language acquisition in social context, based on a large investigation of the language behavior of foreign migrant workers acquiring German through everyday contacts. We have tried to characterize their "developing grammars" and to relate this complex developmental process to social and individual factors that determine it.

Phonologically, syntactically and morphologically, Dutch and German are closely related languages. Yet, there remain sufficient morphosyntactic differences in terms of language development. The contributions of this collection focus on the relationships and differences of these neighbouring West Germanic languages.

Book excerpt: The central idea of Dynamic Antisymmetry is that movement and phrase structure are not independent properties of grammar; more specifically, that movement is triggered by the geometry of phrase structure. Assuming a minimalist framework, movement is traced back to the necessity for natural language to organize words in linear order at the interface with the perceptual-articulatory module.Andrea Moro uses this innovative perspective to analyze several empirical domains, focusing on small clauses, split wh-movement, and clitic constructions. In a final speculative chapter, he examines the general consequences for the design of grammar implied by Dynamic Antisymmetry. The book is self-contained, with a synopsis of current theories of movement and a synthetic presentation of the theory of antisymmetry. An appendix presents the essentials of a unified theory of copular sentences, which plays a central role in the argument and has several important consequences for syntax, for example, for expletives and locality.Linguistic Inquiry Monograph No. 38
