Download or read book Love in Ancient India written by M.L. Varadpande and published by SCB Distributors. This book was released on 2011-02-02 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book chronicles the story of love which is considered an Indian creation. The first love story of the world was found in the Rig Veda and the first comprehensive work on love was written in India with Kamasutra becoming one of its offshoots. Love techniques were perfected over centuries and sculpted on the walls of temples of Khajuraho and Konarak. Since ancient times, rishis in India have believed that it was love which came first and then followed the world. The origin and evolution of love in India is traced by the author in an elaborate manner, providing invaluable insights which make this book a rare treasury in itself. The book draws from concrete sources including cave paintings, ancient archaeological findings and a mass of literature belonging to the Vedic and Buddhist eras to give a complete portrayal of love. Through love lyrics, humorous plays and erotic descriptions, Love in Ancient India takes you through a timeless saga of royalty and grandeur, beauty and infidelity, all of which are interspersed with the concept of the world’s most bewitching expression - love.
Book Synopsis Indian Kavya Literature by : Anthony Kennedy Warder
Download or read book Indian Kavya Literature written by Anthony Kennedy Warder and published by Motilal Banarsidass Publ.. This book was released on 1992 with total page 894 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is multi-volume series work. The main pupose of this work is literary criticism, evaluating a great tradition of literature and to present comprehensive study of sanskrit literature. So far 6 volumes have been published. Each volume presents literature itself in successive periods of its development. Volume VI continues the exploration of Indian Literature (Kavya) into the eleventh century, from Padmagupta and Atula to Hilhana and Manovinoda. In the eleventh century besides what seems to be the culminating point of the storytelling tradition (Bhoja, Ksemendra, Somadeva, etc.), there are a number of surviving long novels, bu Soddhala, Jinesvara, Dhanesvara and Vardhamana. Even epics (e.g. Padmagupta`s) seem to be assimilated to fiction, and that even when extracted from Tradition (Laksmidhara). The Jaina narratives of jinas and the like, supposed to be historical, are likewise subject to the all-pervading influence of fiction (Bhavacandra, Gunapala).Beyond the scope of this influence, the rich imagination of the lyric poet Vallana composed verses in the best, and original, tradition of kavya. Among the rare dramas surviving from the eleventh century is Krsnamisra`s allegorical religious play personifying Vedic categories and the virtues, led by Discrimination, and vices, led by elusion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Jains of India are a flourishing and prosperous community, but their religion is focused on the teaching and example of ascetic renouncers, whose austere regime is actually dedicated to ending worldly life and often culminates in a fast to death. This book, which draws upon a detailed study of Jainism in the city of Jaipur, shows how renunciation and ascetism play a central part in the life of a thriving business community, and how world-renunciation combines for Jain families with the pursuit of worldly happiness.
