These unique sports involve not only major physical endurance and mental challenges but interaction and bonding with nature. They also tend to attract and excite audiences, both at the event and in the media. They are exciting to watch and redraw the boundaries of human achievement with the accompanying risks of injury and death. Adventure sports are usually performed in beautiful, exciting and remote locations or in extreme environments far away from medical assistance. Extreme sports usually involve an element of increased risk. These risks are highlighted by the media, usually after a reported accident or fatality but may vary according to the involvement of the participant; the weekend recreational adventure sports athlete or the experienced professional. A wide variety of sports fall into the category of adventure and extreme sports and with an increasing number of disciplines, this field is ever expanding. Sports are performed in contact with the “ground”; mountain running and biking, rock climbing, ice climbing and mountaineering. In the air: skydiving and base jumping. On water: surfing, white water kayaking and rafting, board sailing and diving. And also involve mechanical vehicles and animals! Some sports may be performed as a combination of few disciplines, such as water and air, e.g. kite surfing, and as so involve very unique mechanisms of injury. Sports events can also be merged to form a multi-sport race comprising many disciplines lastly from single to multi day races. Sports may involve competition with others, against the environment or with oneself, frequently the most ferocious adversary. Adventure sports are becoming increasingly popular in the general public and a few take these sports to an extreme level with the accompanying risks. Those that do, bring such time and dedication that they become professional in terms of training, preparation and finance. More and more people are enjoying adventure sports and unfortunately increased numbers are becoming injured as a result. Future research is progressing alongside the sport development, to allow the sport mechanisms, injury patterns and predisposing factors to be better understood. It is the hope of all researchers to make the sports safer without detracting from their adventurous nature. The aim and scope of our book would be to bring the sports medicine involved ineach of these sports into one volume. We would explain each sport including subtle similarities and differences, the common injury mechanisms, patterns of injury and treatment options. Additional chapters would include the mental characteristics of adventure racers and extreme sports athletes, together with the complexities of competing in hot and cold extreme environments. The book will present chapters focussing on the sports listed below, concentrating on published literature and newly formed studies by experts in the fields of injury epidemiology, prevention, management and rehabilitation.

I did not feel that you the reader was getting a very good deal, and I did not want to spend effort padding the book out which a decent editor would have spotted and removed. So I didn’t. This is actually the second book of our adventures, there are several more to come, but to catch the spirit of Covid I thought that it would be wise to get this into the marketplace before everyone gets Vaccinated and forgets how disruptive to life and normalcy the virus was. Also, currently there is a lot in the media about the Orcas around Tarifa, as you will see we were slightly involved in that, if only as bystanders. The East coast of Spain is not as well visited as the Algarve by yacht based folk and I feel they are missing a lot. If this book inspires anyone to try the luck up that coast, well then job done.

Although you never get 10% off for showing this book, it has enough sensible advice on how to shave unnecessary expenses off the budget without ever feeling or acting like a cheapskate. I enjoyed the author's explanation of Germany's complex history but others may like the "History Cheat Sheet" that reduces six pages of history to a half page summary. Although the author has the ability to focus on the essentials, he drops enough fascinating tidbits to keep it interesting. I also love the explanation of major trends in German culture, arts, music, and literature. The author clearly has opinions but never treats the reader like an idiot or writes down to you in any sense. As a non-German speaker I also loved the way all German terms are translated throughout the guide not expecting me to suddenly remember what is a kirch or Schloss halfway through the book. The accommodation lists are very useful especially as it focuses on the around 80-120 per night middle to upper class hotels that suit my tastes. However, even the lower priced hotels all have private bathrooms, which to me is rather essential when on vacation.--Jane S., Amazon.com. Great to see a guidebook on Germany in English by an author who realizes that Germany is more than Berlin, the Rhine, and Bavaria. Not that the well-known areas are neglected but I particularly enjoyed the wide coverage on the former East German regions.--Steven, Amazon.com. Berlin is the most interesting and most diverse of all German cities. It is probably most famous for its division during the Cold War and seeing related sights such as the Brandenburg Gate, Checkpoint Charlie, and a few surviving pieces of the Berlin Wall are priorities for many visitors. Berlin has more than 170 museums covering all genres. After four decades of division, some collections are now again united into world-class presentations. Highlights include the superb Gemaldegalerie (Paintings Gallery) and the excellent Pergamon Museum. While many modern buildings sprung up in the former no-man's land, several historic buildings are finally being restored. Most of the fabulous Museum Island is either just restored or will be over the next couple of years. The luxurious Adlon Hotel was rebuilt to resemble its pre-War appearance. Unter den Linden, Friedrichstrae, and the Gendarmenmarkt are again vying for the heart and soul of the city. Berlin is easy to enjoy. It is not all museums, galleries, and history. If you are a fellow cruising sailor I hope you take away from this tale that even when things are at their darkest and Death is knocking on the door, there is always light at the end of the tunnel and nearly everything can be fixed, it just takes time and a very good insurance policy. I wrote these books mainly for my own purposes, but book one and two went down very well, and so I had to continue with book three. It was also very cathartic to write about our unpleasant accident, it was also very difficult to do so, as I had to stop many times trying to get through the narrative. I hope you will agree that I just about managed it. Sailors who read this will be disappointed that we only sailed for 10% of the time, but that is the harsh reality of going the wrong way round Iberia, particularly trying to head North up the Portuguese coast in the summer, believe me I tried to sail, as it is cheaper. The wind gods did not allow it. Intrigued, I hope so; read on and enjoy.
