Book excerpt: Rational design theories for highway and airport pavements are presented together with an invention of a much superior paving material, comprising recycled Ethylene Vinyl Acetate (EVA) mixed and compacted with graded aggregates. EVA is the binder (cheaper than asphalt), and the new paving material, called EVAPAVE, is four times stronger and tougher than asphalt concrete, and twice as strong and tough as high quality cement concrete. Fracture mechanics is used for determining the fatigue life of the pavement AC surface, while the stress-dilatancy theory is used for the rutting of the pavement. The theories are then combined to obtain the interaction of fatigue and rutting. Several examples are presented to illustrate the design methodology. The new pavement will not require joints and will not have bumps or depressions and will be the smoothest riding pavement, with huge savings in construction and maintenance and in vehicular fuel and maintenance costs, estimated to exceed $10 billion per year in the U.S. alone. Its fatigue life will outlast any other pavement by more than seven times.

This book was released on 2023-11-30 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the mechanical behavior of solids and contacts (interfaces and joints) is vital for the analysis, design, and maintenance of engineering systems. Materials may simultaneously experience the effects of many factors such as elastic, plastic, and creep strains; different loading (stress) paths; volume change under shear stress; and microcracking leading to fracture and failure, strain softening, or degradation. Typically, the available models account for only one factor at a time; however, the disturbed state concept (DSC) with the hierarchical single-surface (HISS) plasticity is a unified modeling approach that can allow for numerous factors simultaneously, and in an integrated manner. DSC/HISS Modeling Applications for Problems in Mechanics, Geomechanics, and Structural Mechanics provides readers with comprehensive information including the basic concepts and applications for the DSC/HISS modeling regarding a wide range of engineering materials and contacts. Uniformity in format and content of each chapter will make it easier for the reader to appreciate the potential of using the DSC/HISS modeling across various applications. Features: • Presents a new and simplified way to learn characterizations and behaviors of materials and contacts under various conditions • Offers modeling applicable to several different materials including geologic (clays, sands, rocks), modified geologic materials (structured soils, overconsolidated soils, expansive soils, loess, frozen soils, chemically treated soils), hydrate-bearing sediments, and more.

Book excerpt: This synthesis report will be of interest to state, local, and federal agency pavement materials, design, and construction engineers, as well as pavement research engineers and scientists. Those with supervisory oversight for pavement programs will also find it of interest. It describes the current practice for methods to achieve rut-resistant durable pavements. The synthesis documents current experience with permanent deformation of asphalt pavements and identifies methods to improve performance. Information for the synthesis was collected by surveying U.S. and Canadian transportation agencies and by conducting a literature search using domestic and international sources. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes the extent of the rutting problem on the National Highway System, pavement mixture design issues, and the design of rut-resistant mixtures. In addition, alternate mixture types, including stone matrix asphalt and porous asphalt, are discussed, as well as international approaches to mixture design. Finally, the construction of rut-resistant mixtures, including the role of quality control and quality assurance methods, are discussed. A summary of permanent deformation causes and solutions is included in the appendix.

Book excerpt: Cement is the basis of the building and construction industry and of fundamental importance for many civil engineering applications. As such, the cement industry is one of the key industries worldwide necessary for the current and future sustainable development of society. Despite its undisputed importance, the cement industry is one of those industrial branches predominately responsible for high energy consumption and excessive generation of large amounts of carbon dioxide and other contaminants that significantly endanger human health and the environment and contributes to global warming. In this context, nanomaterials, polymeric materials, and natural additives are being used for cement enhancement in various applications. This book examines these novel materials and their optimization, characterization, and sustainable application in the building industry and for stabilizing hazardous waste.
