Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading his book took me back to a time and place when I served in the military. He brought back those humorous times during basic training. He talks about how Lila encouraged him to study hard and progress forward to be the best while serving his country. He describes his first long flight from Travis Air Force Base to his final destination of Clark Air Base, Philippines, and the 463rd OMS. Warm and enriching memories of those he trained with and those who taught him. Some of the stories he writes about being in Vietnam are humor-filled, such as when he became a Captain to order in-flight meals for his crew chiefs. Others brought on a sense of sadness from the loss of a friend. His first sapper attack, how they sent him out to look for trip grenades in his aircraft. He and his good friend from Lynn, Massachusetts, barely missed being hit by a mortar, leaving the flight line. Hearing him say how the warning siren would always go off after the attack, you knew you were safe, was humorous. A must-read book and a different look at a conflict that had no end in sight in 1968.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In May of 1944, American airman Gerald E. Sorensen was shot down over Nazi occupied Belgium. The Belgian Resistance recovered Sorensen and sheltered him in the home of the Abeels family. Friendship between Sorensen and the Abeels blossomed and they came to consider each other as family. The Abeels were active in the Resistance and Sorensen ultimately volunteered to join his Belgian brother Roger Abeels in the Secret Army. Just moments before the British Army arrived to liberate the village of Marcq-lez-Enghien, Sorensen and Abeels were killed in combat with the Nazis, fighting side-by-side. This book tells Sorensen's story: his upbringing, education, marriage and military service; his evasion of capture and kinship with the Abeels; his experience in the Resistance; his final combat and his impact on those he left behind. But this book is more than a biography. It recounts the courageous struggle of the Belgians who risked everything to save Allied airmen and explains why Sorensen and Abeels are extraordinary symbols of the enduring values at the heart of today's transatlantic alliance.

Book excerpt: A scrapbook can tell us much about a person’s life or one period of someone’s life: joys and sorrows, challenges and successes, problems and solutions. Memories of a Tuskegee Airmen Nurse and Her Military Sisters focuses on a four-year period from 1942 to 1946 during World War II when up to twenty-eight women from the Army Nurse Corps staffed the station hospital on the base where the future Tuskegee Airmen were undergoing basic and advanced pilot training. These women were African Americans, graduates of nursing schools throughout the country, registered nurses, and lieutenants in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps. They were military officers, and the pilot cadets saluted them. Pia Marie Winters Jordan’s mother was one of those angels of mercy. Her mother, the former first lieutenant Louise Lomax, did not talk much about her ten years of military nursing, but nonetheless, her Tuskegee Army Flying School scrapbook told a story. Although Jordan may have seen this scrapbook when she was much younger, only when her mother became ill and had to be cared for in a nursing home, did Jordan, Louise’s only child, take a closer look, as she began organizing belongings in the process of closing her mother’s apartment. Jordan saw that the Tuskegee Airmen were not the only ones making Black history during World War II; nurses also had to fight gender as well as racial discrimination. Through her research, she found out more about them. It was time for their story to be told.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This was a magic I’d long forgotten existed. *** Alexander: Once upon a time, she’d smiled a lot. Even in her pain, I could see hints of that girl I'd loved so much. She was smart and adventurous and had the snarkiest sense of humor I’d ever met. And, based on the way she’d nearly grinned at me earlier, I could only guess...or hope, rather, that all of that was still inside. As I left the base to head to the nearest pharmacy, a plan began to hatch itself in my mind. The family housing had prompted it, but the more I thought about it, the more I knew it was the only way. It was perfect, really. I could nurse Carly back to health. She’d even have insurance. She’d be independent of her relatives’ care, and I would spend the rest of our lives making up for my mistakes. My heart began to hammer in my chest, and with each passing second, I could see it unfolding perfectly in my head. The only problem would be convincing Carly. Saying she could be stubborn was like saying winter is chilly. But I could be stubborn, too. *** Carly: I don’t know what I’d expected from the kiss, but it wasn’t this. This...my brain ceased producing words. Instead, I felt. Saw. Tasted. His hands were warm on my face, and his lips were like fire on mine. My eyes were closed, but colors flashed behind my eyelids like fireworks. In that kiss, I saw glimpses of two kids who fell in love and all the dreams they’d painted in those bright Carolina sunsets. Familiar as the kiss was, the boy beneath just wasn’t the same. Like magma pushing through the earth’s crust, a new man was there, breaking through everything I knew. Confidence I hadn't seen in him before radiated from his gentle hands as they kept me rooted to the spot. Then he was gone. I opened my eyes in confusion to see him pulling back as the crowd burst into cheers and whistles. “I present Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Calero,” the judge announced, and the clapping grew even louder. But I couldn’t tear my gaze from him. His eyes smoldered as they met mine, and I knew that we both knew something inside had changed. If only I knew what it was. This was supposed to be a fake marriage, after all, a way to get me the medical care I needed until Grandpa came back. So why did kissing him feel like waking up? Why did it feel like coming home? My Carolina Airman is the second in the My Air Force Fairy Tale series, clean and wholesome standalone novels about life and love with military men. Read it today to find love, truth, and the magic of happily ever after.
