Book excerpt: This report documents the results of a study into the risks associated with degraded performance during rejected and continued take-off from wet and contaminated runways. A comprehensive review of world-wide accident and incident data was undertaken to identify the severity of the problem and the factors involved. Runway condition characteristics, the correlation of runway friction test devices with the friction experienced by aeroplanes, and take-off performance estimation on wet and contaminated runways were reviewed. Performance estimates were examined on the basis of the ratio of contaminated vs dry friction. A method is outlined for classifying runway conditions based upon ICAO SARPS, FAA/NASA trials, and the practices of leading countries and airlines. The frequency of wet and contaminated runways in Canada, the likelihood of critical events on the take-off run, and the take-off weight distribution were determined. These frequency and probability distributions and runway, weather and aircraft performance data were used in a probabilistic analysis of the risk of take-off accidents. A number of counter measures were examined, including the JAR acceptable means of compliance for wet and contaminated runways.

Book excerpt: Describes activities in the third year of a five-year collaborative test program in which the performance of the National Research Council's Falcon 20 research aircraft was tested on winter contaminated runway surfaces at the North Bay airport, January to March 1998. The objectives of the tests were to: determine the aircraft braking coefficients and aircraft contamination drag on various winter contaminated runway surfaces; obtain additional data to refine the Canadian Runway Friction Index tables for recommended landing distances; and obtain additional data towards the establishment of more accurate models for the effect of contamination on continued takeoff and rejected takeoff performance. Coasting runs with no pilot braking were done to verify the rolling friction coefficient and idle thrust, and to determine the contamination drag. Anti-skid braking runs were done to determine the braking coefficient. Three aircraft configurations were tested in the presence of natural snow accumulation on the runway: continued takeoff, rejected takeoff, and landing. Results are compared with those from previous years and braking performance results are compared with the friction index measured by an electronic recording decelerometer. Recommendations are made regarding both technical content and procedures for next year's test program.

Warmer mean and extreme temperatures in future climate can reduce air density, thus reducing the lift generated by the airfoils and inducing weight restriction during take-off and potentially impact aircraft takeoff performance. In addition to this, crosswind and tailwind components can also limit the controllability of aircraft and affect take-off performance. Using an ensemble of transient climate simulations performed for Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 4.5 and 8.5 scenarios with the limited area version of the Global Environment Multiscale (GEM) model, this thesis investigates projected changes to aviation-related climate variables and aircraft take-off performance in terms of weight restriction days and strong tailwind and crosswind occurrences, for 13 major airports across Canada, for 3 categories of aircrafts used for long-, medium- and short-haul flights, and presented as a manuscript in Chapter 3. Results suggest that the projected increases in daily maximum temperature of the order of 4°C to 10°C will augment weight restriction days for some of the studied airports, particularly those located in the Canadian Prairies. Although avoiding takeoff during the warmest period of the day could be a potential solution, analysis focussed on the warmest and coolest periods of the day suggests more weight restriction hours even during the coolest period of the day, for these airfields. Though RCP8.5 in general suggests larger changes to weight restriction hours compared to RCP4.5, the differences between the two scenarios are more prominent for the coolest part of the day as projected changes to daily minimum temperatures occur at a much faster rate for RCP8.5 compared to RCP4.5 and also due to the higher increases in daily minimum temperatures compared to maximum temperatures. As for wind, results indicate that for all studied airports, there are no significant changes to 3-hrly wind characteristics. However, both increases and decreases to crosswind and tailwind are projected, which suggest the need for detailed case studies, especially for those airfields that suggest increases. This thesis provides useful insights related to aircraft performance, in a warmer climate, which will be beneficial to the aviation industry in their planning to adapt to a changing climate., conclusions and limitations are addressed in Chapter 4 and ultra-high resolution Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) simulation is recommended to study the impact of local buildings and terrains on wind fields, which provide a more realistic surface wind characteristics and better decision making"--
