Book Synopsis Clearing the Air by : Indur M. Goklany
Download or read book Clearing the Air written by Indur M. Goklany and published by Cato Institute. This book was released on 1999 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America's air quality is better today than ever before in modern history and continues to steadily improve. How did this remarkable turnaround come about? Basing his conclusions on a painstaking compilation of long-term empirical data on air quality and emissions data extending from the pre- federalization era to the present (some dating back a century), Goklany challenges the orthodoxy that credits federal regulation for improving air quality. He shows that the air had been getting cleaner prior to—and probably would have continued to improve regardless of—federalization. States and localities, after all, have always been engaged in a race to improve the quality of life, which means different things at different stages of economic development. Goklany’s empirical data refute once and for all the race-to-the-bottom rationale for centralized federal regulation. Moreover, technological advances and consumer preferences continue to play important roles in improving air quality. Goklany accordingly offers a regulatory reform agenda that would improve upon the economic efficiency and environmental sensitivity of air quality regulation.
Download or read book Air Pollution XXIII written by J. Barnes and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2015-06-01 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Containing the proceedings of the 23rd International Conference on Modelling, Monitoring and Management of Air Pollution, this book is the latest in a well established series. It addresses various aspects of a topic that is of considerable worldwide concern due to its known impact on health and the environment. The need to balance concern for the environment with the demand for generating economic growth makes air pollution a particularly challenging problem. Further complicating the picture, the widespread nature and effects of air pollution make it an issue that requires not just local but global attention and cooperation. Science can help us identify the nature and scale of air pollution impacts. It is therefore essential in guiding government decisions regarding the most appropriate and effective regulations. As we learn ever more about the basic science of air pollution, and its application, we are better able to predict, assess, and mitigate its effects, locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally. This book presents advances in our knowledge of the science of air pollution. Topics covered include Air Pollution Modelling; Air Pollution Mitigation; Air Pollution Management; Aerosols and Particles; Emission Studies; Exposure and Health Effects; Indoor Air Pollution; Monitoring and Measuring; Case Studies; Emerging Technologies; Power Generation and Air Pollution; Incineration Plant Studies; Air Pollution Chemistry; Global and Regional Studies; Policy and Legislation.

Book Synopsis Air Pollution and Health in Rapidly Developing Countries by : Gordon McGranahan
Download or read book Air Pollution and Health in Rapidly Developing Countries written by Gordon McGranahan and published by Earthscan. This book was released on 2012 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In developing countries the price of rapid growth is all too often noxious airborne pollution, which annually contributes to a disturbing number of avoidable deaths. In recent decades, however, there has been considerable progress in the epidemiology of air pollution, significant changes in international air pollution guidelines, and the emergence of more systematic approaches to air pollution control. While many of these advances have originated in affluent countries, there have been major developments in other parts of the world. In this book, a distinguished cast of leading researchers in both the scientific and policy dimensions of air pollution and health have synthesized the recent developments in the field and their relevance for public health in developing countries. The authors review studies from a wide range of Asian, African and Latin American countries and contrast the findings with those from Europe and North America. They also describe various tools and systems for air pollution management and emphasize approaches that can be used when data is scarce. With a clear focus on the scientific and technical aspects of air pollution and health, this book is essential reading for pollution and health policy-makers, researchers and others concerned with air pollution and health in developing countries.
Book Synopsis WHO global air quality guidelines by : Weltgesundheitsorganisation
Download or read book WHO global air quality guidelines written by Weltgesundheitsorganisation and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2021-09-07 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main objective of these updated global guidelines is to offer health-based air quality guideline levels, expressed as long-term or short-term concentrations for six key air pollutants: PM2.5, PM10, ozone, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide and carbon monoxide. In addition, the guidelines provide interim targets to guide reduction efforts of these pollutants, as well as good practice statements for the management of certain types of PM (i.e., black carbon/elemental carbon, ultrafine particles, particles originating from sand and duststorms). These guidelines are not legally binding standards; however, they provide WHO Member States with an evidence-informed tool, which they can use to inform legislation and policy. Ultimately, the goal of these guidelines is to help reduce levels of air pollutants in order to decrease the enormous health burden resulting from the exposure to air pollution worldwide.

Book Synopsis Economic Instruments for Air Pollution Control by : Ger Klaassen
Download or read book Economic Instruments for Air Pollution Control written by Ger Klaassen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic theory and empirical models suggest that economic instruments should help us to meet environmental goals at lower cost. Practical experience, however, shows that the cost savings of emission trading are smaller than expected and charges usually have had small incentive impacts. This book gives the first comprehensive review of economic theory, simulation models, and practical experience with the use of economic instruments. The book focuses on air pollution control. Part I examines theoretical aspects and simulation modeling in a national context. Part II surveys the practical experience in a variety of countries. Part III explores international issues, such as joint implementation. Because of its unique blend of theoretical and empirical research, the book will prove interesting for both economists and those interested in environmental policy.
Book Synopsis Global Perspectives on Air Pollution Prevention and Control System Design by : Venkatesan, G.
Download or read book Global Perspectives on Air Pollution Prevention and Control System Design written by Venkatesan, G. and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2019-06-25 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once pollutants are released into the atmosphere, they cannot be removed easily nor can the reaction with atmospheric constituents be ceased. However, through enhancing our understanding of control technology, further addition of pollution can be forestalled. Through better understanding of innovations in the field of air pollutant control technology and modelling, better cost-effective control equipment can be designed to achieve a clean biosphere for sustainable life in the near future. Global Perspectives on Air Pollution Prevention and Control System Design is a pivotal reference source that provides vital research on the understanding of the basic concepts of air pollution, modeling concepts, development of various models for source-specific pollutants, and dispersion. While highlighting topics such as climate change, fossil fuels, and motor vehicle emissions, this publication explores the links between the global impact on climate change and modeling concepts of indoor air pollutants. This book is ideally designed for professors, students, researchers, environmental agencies, environmentalists, policymakers, and government officials, seeking current research on future solutions in critical fields of air pollution.
