Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Air Pollution Reviews will provide state-of-the-art reviews of key problems in air pollution science. Leading research workers and key figures from the regulatory and industrial communities will contribute detailed and yet accessible accounts of areas in which they have recognised expertise. The series will run to five volumes, the first being more general than the succeeding volumes. In Volume 1, current perceptions of the effects of air pollutants on health will be reviewed. Recent epidemiological data on the links between particles and effects on health and the methods used to investigate these associations will be critically assessed. For students reading environmental science and those beginning research on air pollution and its effects, regulatory toxicologists and physicians with an interest in environmental medicine, this series will be a central source of up-to-date, critically reviewed information.

Book excerpt: Despite more than 20 years of regulatory efforts, concern is widespread that ozone pollution in the lower atmosphere, or troposphere, threatens the health of humans, animals, and vegetation. This book discusses how scientific information can be used to develop more effective regulations to control ozone. Rethinking the Ozone Problem in Urban and Regional Air Pollution discusses: The latest data and analysis on how tropospheric ozone is formed. How well our measurement techniques are functioning. Deficiencies in efforts to date to control the problem. Approaches to reducing ozone precursor emissions that hold the most promise. What additional research is needed. With a wealth of technical information, the book discusses atmospheric chemistry, the role of oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in ozone formation, monitoring and modeling the formation and transport processes, and the potential contribution of alternative fuels to solving the tropospheric ozone problem. The committee discusses criteria for designing more effective ozone control efforts. Because of its direct bearing on decisions to be made under the Clean Air Act, this book should be of great interest to environmental advocates, industry, and the regulatory community as well as scientists, faculty, and students.

This book was released on 1994 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of ethanol/gasoline mixtures in motor vehicles has been proposed as an alternative fuel strategy that might improve air quality while minimizing US dependence on foreign oil. New enzymatic production methodologies are being explored to develop ethanol as a viable, economic fuel. In an attempt to reduce urban carbon monoxide (CO) and ozone levels, a number of cities are currently mandating the use of ethanol/gasoline blends. However, it is not at all clear that these blended fuels will help to abate urban pollution. In fact, the use of these fuels may lead to increased levels of other air pollutants, specifically aldehydes and peroxyacyl nitrates. Although these pollutants are not currently regulated, their potential health and environmental impacts must be considered when assessing the impacts of alternative fuels on air quality. Indeed, formaldehyde has been identified as an important air pollutant that is currently being considered for control strategies by the State of California. This report focuses on measurements taken in Albuquerque, New Mexico during the summer of 1993 and the winter of 1994 as an initial attempt to evaluate the air quality effects of ethanol/gasoline mixtures. The results of this study have direct implications for the use of such fuel mixtures as a means to reduce CO emissions and ozone in a number of major cities and to bring these urban centers into compliance with the Clean Air Act.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aircraft alternative fuel emission factors from turbine engine combustor performance tests are integrated into the Air Quality Assessment Model (AQAM) to predict the air quality impact of alternative fuels use in the vicinity of Air Force bases. AQAM computes the alternative fuel emission factors from fuel property inputs, enabling the model to predict concentrations for any proposed alternative fuel blend. In addition to aircraft alternative fuel emissions calculations, AQAM was modified to calculate alternative fuel handling and breathing loss emissions from the fuel properties. Using AQAM with two aircraft engine models, the aircraft alternative fuel annual emissions and resulting short-term pollutant concentrations are computed for a typical Air Force base. The analysis indicates that alternative fuel emissions cause a slight increase in pollution concentrations when compared with the baseline JP-4 fuel. A reduction of evaporative hydrocarbon emissions is predicted due to the alternative fuels' lower volatility in comparison with JP-4. (Author).
