Data were collected from training site visits. The focus of the analysis was on the JEFF B air cushion vehicle. Significant recommendations for development of a Landing Craft, Air Cushion (LCAC) training system that will result in a training and cost effective operator training system are as follows: Conduct an ISD program per MIL-T-29053B(TD), MIL-STD-1379B, or similar specifications; Incorporate 'lessons learned' and training concepts and strategies from both the surface and aviation communities, as well as the existing AALC and Voyageur ACV programs; Assign an education specialist (1710) to the LCAC program; Develop an LCAC operator manuals systems; Develop an LCAC operator instructor training program, and Expand the ISD training development to other LCAC areas to include remaining onboard crew members and all areas of LCAC maintenance. Book excerpt: This Air Cushion Vehicle Operator Training System (ACVOTS) Simulator Requirements Analysis was conducted at the direction of the David Taylor Naval Ship Research and Development Center to define the role of simulation in Air Cushion Vehicle (ACV) operator training and to make recommendations concerning potential training devices for the ACVOTS program. Two advanced development ACVs, designated JEFF(A) and JEFF(B), are currently being tested under the Navy's Amphibious Assault Landing Craft (AALC) program. Focus in this analysis was on the JEFF(B) at the AALC Experimental Trials Unit (ETU) due to its projected similarities with the Landing Craft, Air Cushion (LCAC), the first Navy fleet ACV. Recommendations for ACVOTS long-term LCAC operator training program training device procurement were developed as a result of a detailed hands-on training requirements analysis. A draft military specification, Procedures for Simulator Requirements Analysis, MIL-T-XXXXX, was used as a guide in performance of this analysis. Although recommendations contained herein should be implemented prior to and during the short and mid-term LCAC training program, they affect only the long-term program, beginning with LCAC follow-on training.

Book excerpt: The most complex training device for large air cushion vehicle (ACV) operators would be a full-mission simulator. Such a device has not been built, but would be analogous to the simulators currently in use for training both military and civilian aircrew in the operation of aircraft such as the B-52, the C-130, and Boeing 747. The equipment provides a learning environment which is a reproduction of the conditions to be found in operation of the real-world vehicle. In contrast to the real world, the environment in which a simulated vehicle operates is controllable by an instructor, who may introduce malfunctions in chosen vehicle systems and is assisted by computer to monitor the way in which the trainees respond to a learning experience. This Appendix describes the components of a typical full-mission simulator for vehicles of a complexity comparable to a Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC). The state of applicable current technology is described along with modifications and extensions of established techniques required to simulate a large ACV. These craft were designed and built to develop the technology and assess the feasibility and military utility of employing ACVs in amphibious assault. The follow-on design and procurement of the production craft are being accomplished under the Landing Craft, Air Cushion (LCAC) acquisition program. The LCAC craft are intended to be operated by an all enlisted crew. Follow-on Navy-run training for the LCAC is projected to begin in 1986. (sdw).

Book excerpt: The report describes the skills required in the operation of an amphibious Air Cushion Vehicle (ACV) in Army tactical and logistic missions. The research involved an analysis of the ACV characteristics, operating requirements, and environment, and results of a simulation experiment. The analysis indicates that ACV operation is complicated by (a) an inherently slow vehicle response in certain control dimensions, (b) a need for complex control coordinations in performing certain necessary maneuvers, and (c) the ACV's sensitivity to various aspects of the natural and man-made environment. The ACV also poses unique requirements for navigation, maintenance, and collision avoidance. The simulator study showed that ACVs vary considerably in operability as a function of their control configuration and pointed to the need for further attention to the control problem in developing ACV use overland. A training program of from one to three months' duration appears necessary to qualify an operator fully.
