Book excerpt: Air conditioning refers to the cooling and dehumidification of indoor air for thermal comfort. This requires systems for heating, venting and air conditioning (HVAC). This book discusses the application and performance on thermal comfort, indoor air quality and energy efficiency of a variety of room air distribution modes. Efficient energy performance of HVAC systems due to active and passive control of energy consumption are also addressed. Furthermore, this book explores a passive energy system, called air-conditioning cupboard which exploit renewable energies as thermal sources for the purpose of saving energy. Additionally, the thermal supply for air conditioning systems can be carried out efficiently using reversible air pumps. Thus this book examines how to improve the design of these pumps, which have great potential, particularly in Mediterranean climates. Other chapters in this book explore the use of artificial neural networks (ANN) for air conditioning systems; the ventilation concepts utilising ambient energy from air ground and other renewable energy sources and different types of air-conditioning systems with good energy-saving potential, such as the liquid desiccant cooling system (LDCS) and solar-powered air-conditioning systems.

Book excerpt: This comprehensive reference examines the changing role and design of library buildings, using a critical examination of recent examples from around the world. The authors, who represent the views of the architect and the client, outline the history and changing typology of the library. They examine the new national, public, academic and specialist libraries using numerous international examples including Sri Lanka, Vancouver, Johannesburg, Paris and London. New design advice and technical data is presented to illustrate the many approaches that designers have taken in creating a building with many diverse functions. The book concludes with speculations about the future of the library as a place for storing, reflecting upon and exchanging knowledge. Libraries are undergoing fundamental change as new technology liberates the library from its dependence upon the written word. Increasingly libraries are seen as learning resource centres with a smooth interface between computer-based access and traditional book and journal material.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New thinking is essential if we are to design and occupy buildings that can keep us safe with unpredictable economies, climates, energy systems and resource challenges. For too long designers have relied on mechanical solutions for heating, cooling and ventilating buildings. The 21st century dream has to be of a better architecture that enables buildings to be run for as much of a day or year as possible on local, clean, reliable, affordable natural energy. Examples are included from different climates where the fundamental building design is right, its orientation, opening sizes, mass and its natural ventilation systems and pathways. Many modern buildings are poorly designed for climate as manifested by growing incidences of overheating experienced indoor, explored here. The inability of many rating systems to record and improve the climatic design of buildings raises questions about how they deal with issues of basic building performance. This books points the way towards how we can understand such problems, and move forward from over-mechanised poorly designed buildings to a new generation of adaptable buildings designed and refurbished to run largely on natural energy and capable of evolving over time to keep their occupants safe and comfortable, even in a warming world. The chapters were originally published in Architectural Science Review.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores membrane materials as a means of translating natural and renewable resources into a more flexible, dynamic, and reactive architectural skin. It represents the first time that energy-saving design has been addressed systematically in relation to lightweight building systems and tensile membranes. Understanding of the energetic behavior of membranes and foils used as a building envelope is a fundamental theme, as it is the integration of flexible photovoltaics in membranes, as well as the exploitation of water and wind resources. A theoretical, methodological framework for consciously designing the membrane life cycle is presented. The authors cross-cut and combine exploration of climate-based design methodology and life cycle thinking strategies. Both active and passive systems are investigated, referring to alternative productive resources like sun, wind, and water. Case studies are brought forward in the book’s second half, highlighting energy lightness for an increasingly dematerialized architecture and addressing inherent issues. Four main research and development paths are presented, the first two focusing on advancements in façade materials and Photovoltaic systems applicable to membrane architecture, the third referring to fog and dew harvesting and the fourth dealing with the future frontier of flexible transparency and designs for well-being through a passive solar system.
