Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are you weary? Stressed? Depressed, anxious, and annoyed? And, to top it all off, do you feel guilty for feeling bad? Rachel Norman gets you, mama. She knows how much you love your kids. And how, day after day, you put your family’s needs first, which means your own needs come last. Or don’t come at all. Rachel used to be a mom who spent her days weary, anxious, and guilt laden. She had five kids in five years, lived on three different continents, and then was blindsided by a devastating health diagnosis. Neglecting her own physical, spiritual, mental, and emotional needs for so long—in an effort to be a selfless mother—had left her utterly depleted. And physically unwell. Then she began asking a question she’d never considered before: Could it be that taking good care of myself is not actually selfish, but maybe, just maybe, something a responsible adult does? In this countercultural book, Rachel takes some weight off your shoulders by offering hands-on, rubber-meets-the-road strategies to cultivate a life you aren’t trying to constantly escape teaching you to discover and claim your own limits and boundaries so you can be a calm, resilient, peaceful mother showing you how to shape your daily life and values around the few things that really matter, and how to let the rest go If mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy. But when mama is at peace? Everyone benefits.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From pasties to postpartum and everything in between No one said motherhood would be easy. For Adiba Nelson, the journey to parenthood started with a big bang and continues with a breakdown (or two) and several “why?” questions for God. Witty and bold, Afro-Latina Adiba grew up in survival mode. Her sometimes complicated relationship with her strong-willed, vibrant, religious mother marked her views of mothering and love. When a chance encounter with a tall-ish, brown-skinned brotha at Ruby Tuesday’s right before closing time collided with a Jill Scott song and the right time of the month, Adiba found herself unexpectedly pregnant. She also found herself unexpectedly falling into the same relationship patterns of the matriarchs before her—the ones she swore she’d never end up in. Mom to a new baby with high medical needs and with a slew of hardships that just won’t quit, she set out on a reckoning that was just as generational as it was personal. Along the way, Adiba never loses her heart or her humor. This is a true love story, but the kind about a woman loving herself enough to change the course of her life for herself, her child, and the women after her as well as before. From pasties to postpartum depression, Ain’t That A Mother is not your average motherhood memoir—and Adiba is not your average mother. The in-between moments and the self-revelations are where this bold and brilliant story of love, family secrets, and lots of “what the...?” really shines. Just like parenting, the story is messy, but the reward is incredibly satisfying.

Book excerpt: Deep within the pulsating heart of modern-day San Francisco, John Adams finds himself ensnared in the suffocating grip of a relentless suicide cult. Despite his desperate pleas for guidance from every avenue—friends, therapists, even trusted colleagues—the tendrils of lunacy only tighten, threatening to plunge him over the precipice into darkness. With each passing moment, the sinister ideologies of the cult tighten their hold, propelling John towards an ominous climax where salvation seems but a distant dream, until an unlikely hero emerges from the shadows. Meanwhile, amidst the blood-soaked fields and tangled jungles of the Vietnam War, Chadwick Fuller fights not only the enemy lurking in the shadows but also the demons gnawing at his soul. Through the smoke and chaos of battle, his story unfurls—a raw narrative of camaraderie, chaos, and the brutal price of obedience. In the crucible of conflict, the true value of life is laid bare, etched into the faces of fallen comrades and the haunting echoes of war. With each turn of the page, the trajectories of these two lives hurtle towards an inevitable collision. Through shared hardships and improbable connections forged amidst adversity, a glimmer of hope flickers to life—a beacon of redemption amidst the darkness. Yet, as long-buried truths emerge and shadows of the past loom large, the destinies of mentor and mentee hang precariously in the balance. In a final, electrifying showdown, their resilience is tested to the brink as the specters of their past threaten to consume them whole. In this electrifying tale of suspense and revelation, the threads of fate entwine, weaving a narrative of sacrifice, redemption, and the indomitable resilience of the human spirit.

All y'all, go to bed!' It'd be like two o'clock in the afternoon. 'Go to bed!'" Bernie Mac, the royal king of the Original Kings of Comedy, is salty and pissed off. The Chicago-bred performer has issues to get off his chest, and he doesn't mince words when he lets loose. No surprise, his live appearances have earned him a reputation as perhaps the truest voice of modern humor. Now, Mac has captured his comedic genius in print with his hilarious debut book. Tearing through a wide range of topics with equal parts insight and irreverence, Bernie Mac shares views that may not sit well with everyone -- especially if you're caught in the crosshairs of his rants ("Kids today don't get the kind of injuries we used to get as children -- cut, bruised. Now, these lil' muh'fuckas just continuously get shot"). Still, his way of looking at the world will probably make you think and it's all but guaranteed to make you laugh. Taking on superstar athletes, the movie business, his fellow comedians, his marriage, and his friends and family ("You always knew when your grandmother was at home because her wig was on that little Styrofoam stand"), Mac unleashes side-splitting riffs on sex, religion, hygiene, money, and more. Nobody is safe; nothing is sacred. Not even Bernie himself. Throughout I Ain't Scared Of You, Mac turns his humor inward, firing off self-deprecating salvos about his golf game, his own personal hypocrisies, even his sexual prowess -- "Women got toys...You can't compete with no dildo." Mac's insights have earned him critical acclaim and international popularity. Now, I Ain't Scared Of You captures Bernie Mac's humor whole -- unadorned, unpretentious, and unafraid.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an unveiling of the egregious behavior of white America perpetrated against people of color, particularly the black man that they so commonly named Negro—a name that primarily denotes “a piece of commodity-usable property.” This is an exposé on love and forgiveness or how else can we, as a nation, or even the world, move on. This book reveals how the black man accepted being a Negro, a piece of commodity, and, even now, refuses to detach himself from that subservient consciousness of the Negro. I Ain’t Nobody’s Negro is the beginning of a quest to change people’s consciousness of who they are. The black man was systematically taught, for over two hundred years, that black is bad and white is good; thus is the reason why he fries his hair straight, colors his eyes, and bleaches his skin—all to be as close to white as he can. He was trained to subconsciously hate himself. This book shows the black man how to become self-fulfilled and self-reliant and how to love himself as well as those that committed the hate-filled atrocities against him over the years.

A powerful read!" --Julie Cantrell, New York Times & USA Today best-selling author of Perennials When her husband dies, Charlotte can't face the things she's done that could tear her family apart. So she drops a goodbye letter in the cookie jar and flees south to escape everything--her life, her three daughters, the mistakes she's made, and the secrets eating her alive. Now Gracey and her sisters are alone on Chicago's South Side with nothing but their home and belongings. They're doing everything they can to stay together, but young teens aren't meant to parent themselves. Their close-knit Black community gathers around them to keep them fed and clothed with the utilities on, but that's not enough to fix the damage of abandonment. Hundreds of miles away, Charlotte is struggling to keep her own head above water. She's made a close friend who talks to her about God in a way Charlotte's never heard before. But when her demons catch up to her, the shaky peace she tried to build shatters. Even if she's able to find the courage to embrace motherhood again, will it be enough to save the family she left behind? "Compelling, raw, vulnerable, and set firmly in reality, Gracey and Charlotte's story will grip readers from first page to last. Fans of Robin W. Pearson, Katie Powner, and Angela Jackson-Brown will be moved by this redemptive, hopeful story about what it means to be a family." --Susie Finkbeiner, author of The All-American and The Nature of Small Birds "Deeply evocative of The Women of Brewster Place, Shelton's storytelling masterfully draws us into the landscapes of place and heart, demonstrating that the thread of love is what finally saves us, even if we don't know why." --Dr. Stephen G. Ray Jr., former president of the Society for the Study of Black Religion

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings back into print a remarkable record of black life in the 1920s, chronicled by Edward C.L. Adams, a white physician from the area around the Congaree River in central South Carolina. It reproduces Adams's major works, Congaree Sketches (1927) and Nigger to Nigger (1928), two collections of tales, poems, and dialogues from blacks who worked his land, presented in the black vernacular language. They are supplemented here by a play, Potee's Gal, and some brief sketches of poor whites. What sets Adams's tales apart from other such collections is the willingness of his black informants to share with him not only their stories of rabbits and "hants" but also their feelings on such taboo subjects as lynchings, Jim Crow courts, and chain gangs. Adams retells these tales as if the blacks in them were talking only among themselves. Whites do not appear in these works, except as rare background figures and topics of conversation by Tad, Scip, and other black storytellers. As Tad says, "We talkin' to we." That Adams was permitted to hear such tales at all is part of the mystery that Robert O'Meally explains in his introduction. The key to the mystery is Adams's ability -- in his life, as in his works -- to wear both black and white masks. He remained a well-placed member of white society at the same time that he was something of a maverick within it. His black informants therefore saw him not only as someone more likeable and trustworthy than most whites but also as someone who was in a position to help them in some way if he understood more about their lives. As a writer, O'Meally suggests, Adams was not simply an objective recorder of folklore. By donning a black mask, Adams was able to project attitudes and values that most whites of his place and time would have disavowed. As a result, his tales have a complexity and richness that make them an authentic witness to the black experience as well as a lasting contribution to American letters.
