Book Synopsis Public Diplomacy at Home by : Ellen Huijgh
Download or read book Public Diplomacy at Home written by Ellen Huijgh and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-06-03 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the domestic dimension of public diplomacy, which must be understood within the context of public diplomacy’s evolution over time. In the virtually connected world of today, newcomers such as supranational organizations, sub-states and Asian countries have had less difficulty than Western nation-states including a domestic dimension in public diplomacy. Doing so does not separate the domestic and international components; rather, it highlights that there is a holistic/integrative approach to public involvement at home and abroad. In Huijgh’s comprehensive analysis, including case studies from North America, Europa and the Asia-Pacific, public diplomacy’s international and domestic dimensions can be seen as stepping stones on a continuum of public participation that is central to international policymaking and conduct.

Book Synopsis East and South-East Asia by : Andrew T. H. Tan
Download or read book East and South-East Asia written by Andrew T. H. Tan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-03 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economic growth of East and South-East Asia in the context of the global financial crisis has strengthened the view that this region is emerging in the 21st century as the most economically vibrant region in the world. With some of the largest economies, and generally high economic growth rates compared to the rest of the world, it is unsurprising that East and South-East Asia has become the subject of global interest. East Asia’s rise inevitably focuses attention on the issue of China’s emergence as a regional and global power. Such a prospect challenges the current status quo, in which the region is dominated by the USA and its regional allies, and issues in Sino-US strategic relations have raised global awareness of the need to understand this pivotal region better. In addition, the Taiwan issue continues to evoke nationalist sentiments in China, and North Korea continues to threaten regional stability. Non-traditional (or alternative) security issues are also of major importance in the region, including natural disasters and epidemics, as well as challenges relating to human rights and governance, transnational crime, demographic issues, economics and trade and regionalism. This Handbook aims to offer an insight into these issues. The volume is divided into two main sections. The first, International Relations and Security Perspectives, will focus on the international relations of the region, paying special attention to the key state players. The chapter contributions will examine the security perspectives, and foreign and defence policies of these states, as well as key bilateral relationships. The second section will examine key Regional Non-traditional Security Issues, including globalization, transnational health challenges, population growth and the environment.

Book Synopsis Chinese Public Diplomacy by : Falk Hartig
Download or read book Chinese Public Diplomacy written by Falk Hartig and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-08-27 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the first comprehensive analysis of Confucius Institutes (CIs), situating them as a tool of public diplomacy in the broader context of China’s foreign affairs. The study establishes the concept of public diplomacy as the theoretical framework for analysing CIs. By applying this frame to in-depth case studies of CIs in Europe and Oceania, it provides in-depth knowledge of the structure and organisation of CIs, their activities and audiences, as well as problems, challenges and potentials. In addition to examining CIs as the most prominent and most controversial tool of China’s charm offensive, this book also explains what the structural configuration of these institutes can tell us about China’s understanding of and approaches towards public diplomacy. The study demonstrates that, in contrast to their international counterparts, CIs are normally organised as joint ventures between international and Chinese partners in the field of education or cultural exchange. From this unique setting a more fundamental observation can be made, namely China’s willingness to engage and cooperate with foreigners in the context of public diplomacy. Overall, the author argues that by utilizing the current global fascination with Chinese language and culture, the Chinese government has found interested and willing international partners to co-finance the CIs and thus partially fund China’s international charm offensive. This book will be of much interest to students of public diplomacy, Chinese politics, foreign policy and international relations in general.

Book Synopsis Multilateral Asian Security Architecture by : See Seng Tan
Download or read book Multilateral Asian Security Architecture written by See Seng Tan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comparative assessment of the material and ideational contributions of five countries to the regional architecture of post-Cold War Asia. In contrast to the usual emphasis placed on the role and centrality of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Asia’s multilateral architecture and its component institutions, this book argues that the four non-ASEAN countries of interest here 3⁄4 Australia, Japan, China and the United States 3⁄4 and Indonesia have played and continue to play an influential part in determining the shape and substance of Asian multilateralism from its pre-inception to the present. The work does not contend that existing scholarship overstates ASEAN’s significance to the successes and failures of Asia’s multilateral enterprise. Rather, it claims that the impact of non-ASEAN stakeholders in innovating multilateral architecture in Asia has been understated. Whether ASEAN has fared well or poorly as a custodian of Asia’s regional architecture, the fact remains that the countries considered here, notwithstanding their present discontent over the state of that architecture, are key to understanding the evolution of Asian multilateralism. This book will be of much interest to students of Asian politics, international organisations, security studies and IR more generally.

Download or read book Hidden Wars written by Sara E. Davies and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-03-22 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Hidden Wars, Sara E. Davies and Jacqui True examine the relationship between reports of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) and structural gender inequality in three conflict-affected societies in Asia--Burma, the Philippines, and Sri Lanka. Based on extensive field research and an original dataset on conflict-related SGBV, Davies and True show how reporting is significantly constrained by a variety of factors, including normalized gendered violence as well as political dynamics affecting local civil society, humanitarian, and international organizations. They address the real-world limitations of data collection and argue that these constraints reinforce a culture of silence and impunity that perpetuates SGBV and permits governments to abrogate their responsibility for this violence.

Book Synopsis Australia and the World by : Beaumont, Joan
Download or read book Australia and the World written by Beaumont, Joan and published by Sydney University Press. This book was released on 2013-05-20 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australia and the World celebrates the pioneering role of Neville Meaney in the formation and development of foreign relations history in Australia and his profound influence on its study, teaching and application. The contributors to the volume, historians, practitioners of foreign relations and political commentators, many of whom were taught by Meaney at the University of Sydney over the years, focus especially on the interaction between geopolitics, culture and ideology in shaping Australian and American approaches to the world. Individual chapters examine a number of major themes informing Neville Meaney's work, including the sources and nature of Australia's British identity; the hapless, if dedicated, efforts of Australian politicians, public servants and intellectuals to reconcile this intense cultural identity with Australia's strategic anxieties in the Asia-Pacific region; and the sense of trauma created when the myth of 'Britishness' collapsed under the weight of new historical circumstances in the 1960s. They survey relations between Australia and the United States in the years after World War Two. Finally, they assess the US perceptions of itself as an 'exceptional' nation with a mission to spread democracy and liberty to the wider world and the way in which this self-perception has influenced its behaviour in international affairs.

Book Synopsis Think Tanks in Australia by : Trent Hagland
Download or read book Think Tanks in Australia written by Trent Hagland and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-03-22 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the most comprehensive study of the Australian think-tank industry to date. Drawing on empirical evidence, it first assesses the structure of the industry, the methods think tanks use to persuade policymakers, and public perceptions of their effectiveness. The book then proceeds to examine three unique policy cases to analyse think tank influence on policymaking. It argues that whilst think tanks play important roles in Australia’s policy process, their impacts vary depending on their approach and objectives. The book also demonstrates that policymakers with contrasting ideological orientations diverge in their assessments of the utility and influence of think tanks. It will appeal to students and scholars of public policy, and practitioners in public administration and governance.
Book Synopsis Contemporary Developments in Agricultural Cyber-Physical Systems by : Karthick, G.S.
Download or read book Contemporary Developments in Agricultural Cyber-Physical Systems written by Karthick, G.S. and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2023-08-01 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cultivation of crops plays a very important role in agriculture. However, proper maintenance and management are required. Lack of such management would lead to crop loss or reduced crop yields. Hence, the ability to detect and identify diseases on infected crops is a problem of increasing concern. Real-time disease detection systems do not exist in the current agricultural landscape. It requires tremendous amounts of work, expertise in plant diseases, and excessive processing time. Using precision agriculture techniques, combined with AI, a great deal of work is reduced. Contemporary Developments in Agricultural Cyber-Physical Systems provides a forum for researchers and practitioners to exchange ideas and achieve progress in cyber-physical systems by highlighting agricultural applications, advances, and research challenges. The book features chapters on all aspects pertaining to this multidisciplinary paradigm, in particular in its application to sustainable agriculture developments. Covering topics such as automation, monitoring systems, and smart agriculture, this premier reference source is an excellent resource for scientists, healthcare professionals, data analysts, computer scientists, students and educators of higher education, researchers, and academicians.
