Book excerpt: Teaching AIDS begins with a discussion of how teachers can create an environment of support for an AIDS education programme. Recognizing that AIDS education must differ for students of different age groups, the author presents tailored, age-appropriate content - what and how teachers should communicate AIDS information to young children, older children and teenage students.Teaching AIDS also addresses actual methods teachers can use to influence their students' attitudes and behaviour by helping them to recognize problem situations in which risks might arise, and presenting them with the actual skills they need to protect themselves in such situations.

This book was released on 1991 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide was developed out of a 5-year project aimed at preventing the transmission of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) by promoting HIV prevention and AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) education in school health programs. This document includes recommendations of a January, 1989 forum which addressed HIV prevention education for special education students, results of a review of existing curricula, and information on a training model which calls for teams of health educators and special educators to collaborate on the planning and delivery of instruction. The introduction describes the sponsoring organizations. A summary of the forum conclusions addresses the roles of professionals, parents, and children and youth with special needs as well as specific deficiencies discovered in instruction and curriculum; recommendations are provided under such topics as policy, training, inservice, statewide activities, curriculum, and instruction. Basic information about HIV and AIDS is presented next and includes information on risk factors for children and the role of education in helping stop the spread of AIDS. Policies, resolutions, and principles of several organizations for AIDS prevention education are presented next. Curriculum information is provided in the final section and includes a checklist for a good AIDS curriculum, a listing of curricula receiving favorable reviews, a sample AIDS curriculum, and a sample lesson plan. A list of resources including 14 materials, a database, three hotlines, and sources of training conclude the guide. (DB)

It presents specific suggestions for adapting curricula and teaching styles to meet the needs of individual students. The introduction discusses why students with special needs should receive HIV/AIDS education and what barriers to that education exist. It notes the elements necessary for quality HIV/AIDS education for students with special needs. The second component provides ideas for adapting instructions for students with special needs (e.g., determining the appropriate program, using a multisensory approach, and using task analysis). It includes adaptation strategies, a quick reference, and an HIV/AIDS checklist. The third component offers teaching activities with suggestions for adaptations to accommodate students with specific disabilities (e.g., learning disabilities, mental retardation, emotional disturbance, and visual impairment). The fourth component offers a list of references and resources on HIV/AIDS education for students with special needs. (SM).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2012 in the subject Social Work, grade: Passed, University of Leeds (School of Education), course: PhD in Science Education, language: English, abstract: The needs of young people in classroom based HIV/AIDS Education in Malawi, the extent to which current classroom practices respond to these needs, and the factors influencing these responses have been explored using questionnaires, interviews, lesson observations, and document analysis. In contrast to previously reported literature on HIV/AIDS Education in Malawi, the present study has drawn pupils’ needs directly from the pupils’ themselves, focussed on classroom practice, and triangulated the various data sets to give a comprehensive picture of HIV/AIDS Education in Malawi. Pupils identified a need for open discussion climates on HIV/AIDS issues despite a conservative cultural and religious adult world that is not open. They also identified a need for explicit and accurate knowledge on HIV/AIDS issues, opportunities to acquire behavioural skills for HIV prevention, and involvement of external speakers. The needs of the pupils have not been adequately addressed by the current classroom practice. Factors which influenced this can be linked to lack of policies that are responsive to culture and religion, ineffective and inadequate teaching policy guidelines, and lack of a policy prioritizing HIV/AIDS education by making it examinable. The findings suggest that in future, effective HIV/AIDS Education needs to be informed by the pupils’ needs. To address these needs, support from the wider society and related policies, coupled with appropriate management and classroom practice will be required. Understanding these lessons is a must for HIV/AIDS curriculum developers, policy makers and implementers in any education system.
