Book excerpt: This handbook brings together a distinguished team of scholars from philosophy, theology, and religious studies to provide the first in-depth discussion of Vedanta and the many different systems of thought that make up this tradition of Indian philosophy. Emphasizing the historical development of Vedantic thought, it includes chapters on numerous classical Vedantic philosophies as well as the modern Vedantic views of Sri Ramakrishna, Sri Aurobindo, and Romain Rolland. The volume offers careful hermeneutic analyses of how Vedantic texts have been interpreted, and it addresses key issues and debates in Vedanta, including religious diversity, the nature of God, and the possibility of embodied liberation. Venturing into cross-philosophical and cross-cultural territory, it also brings Vedanta into dialogue with Saiva Nondualism as well as contemporary Western analytic philosophy. Highlighting current scholarly controversies and charting new paths of inquiry, this is an indispensable research guide for anyone interested in the past, present, and future of Vedanta and Indian philosophy.

Book excerpt: This book is a wholly life affirming and positive account of how spiritual evolution is the domain of all of us, whether we realize and accept it or not. It is very practical and down to earth. It explains how the great spiritual traditions of the world agree to a surprisingly wide extent as to what, in essence, a human being is comprised, how the truth of really and truly what we are may be realized, and under what circumstances true and lasting happiness can be availed. The book shows how what is now known as mindfulness is in truth part of the essential make up of us all and how it comprises something of the utmost value if it is perceived as a path not just to therapeutic well-being but to spiritual realization. The book outlines just how accessible this subject is because it is essentially practical. It uses examples from across the globe and down the ages from many traditions, cultures, and religions but does so in a manner free of dogma and with a light touch. The reader is encouraged to investigate and given various exercises and ideas to use. One is left with the feeling that the outcome and destiny of all of us is actually blissful and full of love and well-being, and that is entirely within reach of all of us if we are prepared to approach this vast subject with an open mind and an open heart.

He deals clearly and exhaustively with such topics as Shaktipat (the descent of Divine Grace), Diksha (initiation), and the role of the Guru. His treatment of the various paths (upayas) appropriate for the different types of practitioners is especially useful. The book ends with a chapter on enlightenment (jivanmukti). This chapter not only presents the meaning of self-realization-in-this-lifetime, but offers material on this topic for the first time in English.

Book excerpt: The Gītā is considered to be one of the most exhaustive scriptures on the spiritual ascent of man in the form of a dialogue with God. Specially focusing on man’s pursuit of happiness, the book attempts to summarise the entire Gita teaching into a two-part recipe for finding the happiness within oneself, namely ’Take lightly all that happens to you. And take all our obligations seriously, without fear of results or favour of rewards.’ To arrive at this methodology for action, the author relice heavily on the Vedantic school of advaita (non-duality and its maxim, “The real ‘I’ is neither the doer nor the experiencer.”) The philosophy of non-duality itself is explained in the simplest terms through a long conversation. Unusual diagramatical presentations of the core content of the book add clarity to the comprehension.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a few notable exceptions, analytical philosophy of religion in the West still continues to focus almost entirely on the Iudaeo-Christian tradition. In particular, it is all too customary to ignore the rich fund of concepts and arguments supplied by the Indian religious tradition. This is a pity, for it gratuitously impoverishes the scope of much contemporary philosophy of religion and precludes the attainment of any insights into Indian religions comparable to those that the clarity and rigour of analytic philosophy has made possible for the Iudaeo-Christian tradition. This volume seeks to redress the imbalance. The original idea was to invite a number of Indian and Western philosophers to contribute essays treating of Indian religious concepts in the style of contemporary analytical philosophy of religion. No further restrietion was placed upon the contributors and the resulting essays (all previously unpublished) exhibit a diversity of themes and approaches. Many arrangements of the material herein are doubtless defensible. The rationale for the one that has been adopted is perhaps best presented through some introductory remarks about the essays themselves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an account of the concept of mind in Hindu Tantra through a study of religious and philosophical texts in the medieval period. Offering an understanding on how the mind is conceptualized both as that which keeps a person bound to the cycle of reincarnation and as having transformative potential in allowing a person to achieve liberation or salvation, this book examines mostly previously untranslated sources. It shows how there are different understandings of the mind that relate to different ideas of redemption. The main tantric tradition, the Śaiva Siddhānta, adopts a model of mind from Yoga in which the wandering mind keeps us trapped, whereas the nondualist Śaiva tradition, sometimes called ‘Kashmir’ Śaivism, sees the mind as inherently pure and free. The book traces a history of the concept of mind from early sources, especially Buddhism, through to the tantric medieval period, and ending with the eighteenth century. The author shows how the concept changes and what is retained. A comparison of the tantric ideas of mind with those of some European philosophy – notably Descartes’ dualism and German idealism’s non-dualism – sharpens the concept of mind in the tantric tradition. A historical and philosophical study of key ideas in the tantric traditions, this book will be of interest to researchers in the field of Religious Studies, Asian Religion, Hindu Studies, Indian philosophy, and comparative philosophy.
