Ao longo de sua trajetória, entretanto, uma série de outras lutas sociais combinadas, que estão relacionadas ao seu cotidiano, se desenvolve no seu interior. Buscando perceber e discutir a incorporação de novos componentes à luta pela terra - em especial a agroecologia, este trabalho resgata uma parte do histórico do Movimento, procurando identificar os principais mediadores que interferem em tal processo. De forma mais específica, foram levantados os motivos que impulsionam agricultores assentados no estado do Rio Grande do Sul a incorporar a agroecologia nas suas práticas produtivas. Os fundamentos estão associados a um discurso construído ideologicamente, que propugna pela contraposição ao modelo da agricultura moderna ou industrial amparada pelo latifúndio. Ao mesmo tempo, contudo, estão relacionados a dificuldades e necessidades particulares. Servem de exemplo os impedimentos ao acesso a auxílios financeiros; a busca por segurança alimentar na escala local, através da diversificação de produtos para o auto-consumo; a possibilidade de relativa autonomia desses agricultores na vinculação aos mercados; a busca de qualidade de vida; e a (re)criação de espaços de socialização através da comercialização via feiras. Note-se que os motivos estão fortemente identificados com a condição de excluídos dos assentados, remetendo a uma possibilidade de inclusão social desta parcela de agricultores historicamente marginalizada. Percebe-se que ao longo da trajetória do MST, este discurso modifica-se, passando de refratário a receptivo às proposições agroecológicas. Na passagem do discurso à prática, deve-se considerar que a condição de marginalidade, ao mesmo tempo em que constitui a força dos assentados na luta pela "transformação social", os impele à reintegração no interior do mercado, visando garantir resultados imediatos no plano da reprodução social. Essa tensão fez com que o Movimento criasse um discurso coerente com as proposições agroecológicas, buscando ressaltar sua faceta de resistência e atenuar as contradições com o enunciado ideológico. O aporte desta dissertação ao debate é apontar os mecanismos que a agroecologia aciona nos assentamentos de reforma agrária estudados e as mudanças - sejam concretas, sejam de perspectiva - que ela traz para as famílias assentadas.

At the end of the 1990s, the commercial release of Roundup Ready (RR) soybean triggered a heated debate over the introduction of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in Brazilian agriculture, which developed into an open political conflict opposing pro- and anti-GMOs groups in Brazilian society. This volume examines some of the structuring axes of this conflict by applying a narrative analysis of political conflict. In this approach, politics is perceived as a process of interpretive conflict in which participants in the political game seek to establish the lines that delimit the very definition of public issues under debate. The issue of GMOs is understood, from this perspective, as a public controversy whose dynamics are shaped by the discourses that emerge from the dispute itself. To analyze these controversies, the book focuses on three axes of narrative analyses: the conflict over distributives issues associated with the commercial release of RR soy; the conflict over scientific uncertainty associated with the environmental risks of GMOs; and the conflict over labeling policies. Transgenics in Dispute: Political Conflicts in the Commercial Liberation of GMOs in Brazil will be of interest to both social and environmental scientists concerned with the risks produced by the newest technologies that mediate our relationship with the environment and with the public debate that their use tends to provoke. Não há ainda uma definição teórica sobre a agroecologia no MST, porém têm convicção do que não se deseja para a agricultura, ao meio rural e para a sociedade, fomentado pelo Agronegócio. A agroecologia é considerada auxiliar na luta pela reforma agrária sendo muito importante para o acúmulo de forças das organizações populares através de uma nova relação com o meio ambiente, renda e qualidade de vida e que proporcione a resistência dos camponeses assentados. Afirmam que houve avanços significativos no interior do MST e deve ser um tema transversal, na metodologia de massificação que deve ser lenta, gradual e segura, levando em consideração: a resposta econômica; as condições materiais locais; a cooperação agrícola; e a qualificação de quadros políticos e técnicos. A consolidação da agroecologia se dará somente com a efetivação da reforma agrária e da cooperação e será fruto de um processo histórico de ruptura, enfrentamento e luta.

Esta pesquisa buscou analisar, a partir da caracterização da trajetória de vida de quatro famílias assentadas pela Reforma Agrária no Assentamento Itapuí, município de Nova Santa Rita, estado do Rio Grande do Sul, as motivações que orientam essas famílias em suas escolhas com relação à adoção de estilos de agricultura de base ecológica, ou de diferentes estratégias produtivas. Essas famílias são produtoras de hortaliças ecológicas há aproximadamente doze anos e têm histórias de vida diferentes, porém com pontos chave em comum. A pesquisa realizada teve um caráter qualitativo e foi fundamentada em três ferramentas metodológicas para coleta de dados primários: observação participante, entrevistas estruturadas e semi-estruturadas. Sendo a ferramenta central para coleta dos dados as entrevistas semi-estruturadas, onde se buscou captar uma série de dados objetivos e subjetivos de relações sociais, econômicas, culturais e ambientais junto às famílias pesquisadas. Buscou-se caracterizar a região e, principalmente, o assentamento onde vivem e trabalham as quatro famílias. Pode-se destacar a formação do grupo coletivo de produção do qual faziam parte as quatro famílias no início do assentamento, e a partir de onde começaram a estabelecer relações de vizinhança, e parcerias na produção e comercialização. A caracterização da história de cada família, e suas relações com o meio rural, foi feita desde a época que precedeu o acampamento até a descrição da unidade de produção das quatro famílias hoje. As relações sociais, culturais, econômicas, políticas e com o ambiente natural, estabelecidas ao longo das trajetórias acabaram por determinar a forma de relação com o ambiente e influenciam nas tomadas decisões com relação às estratégias produtivas adotadas na produção de hortaliças. Por diferentes motivos essas famílias buscaram sua reprodução social através da adoção da agroecologia. As diferenças e semelhanças observadas nas trajetórias das famílias permitiram descrever, de forma qualitativa, a evolução dos manejos adotados na produção e analisar os principais razões de ordem prática e simbólica que interferem na adoção de determinado sistema de produção. A caracterização da trajetória de vida e dos diferentes manejos adotados por essas famílias, mostra uma realidade do meio rural vinculada a um processo organizado de Reforma Agrária e da busca da reprodução social através da agroecologia. Acredita-se, enfim, que essas famílias a partir das escolhas que fazem com relação às suas estratégias produtivas, sejam agentes sociais capazes de realizar projetos e desenvolver ações que promovam um processo local de desenvolvimento com base na agroecologia.

Using an incremental/reformist to transformation/radical continuum framework for alternative agrifood movements, this book identifies tensions between competing discourses that stress food sovereignty, social justice, and fair trade and those that emphasize food security, efficiency and free trade. In particular, it highlights the role that governance processes play in sustainability transitions and the ways that power and politics affect sustainability visions and discourses. The book includes chapters that review sustainability discourses at the macro and meso levels, as well as case studies from Africa, Australia, Canada, Europe, South America and the USA.
