The book is supplemented by numerous maps and covers issues including demography, Jewish settlements, water and natural resources, transport infrastructure, planning, partition plans for Jerusalem, settlement policy and the Separation Fence. One of the first books to tackle this contentious subject from a geographical rather than a political or historical perspective, The West Bank and Gaza Strip will be of huge interest to both undergraduate and graduate students studying the Israel-Palestine question.

Book excerpt: Shared water resources in Israel and Palestine are often the site of political, economic, historical, legal and ethical contestation. In this, the first of two volumes on the subject, the authors look beyond the political tensions of the region, to argue for the need for shared water security and co-operative resource management. The History of Water in the Land Once Called Palestine, traces the history of water resources and security and their development from the Ottoman period until 2020, examining how the state of water security amongst Palestinians and Israelis has diverged, resulting in the current success of Israeli water security in contrast to the high water insecurity experienced by Palestinians. The authors assess water security in three parts: security of access to water resources, security of access to water services and finally, security against risks to and from water.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shared water resources in Israel and Palestine are often the site of political, economic, historical, legal and ethical contestation. In this, the second of two volumes on the subject, the authors look beyond the political tensions of the region, to argue for the need for shared water security and co-operative resource management. Winning Water Security for Palestinians and Israelis, the authors assess water security in terms of security of access to water resources, security of access to water services and security against risks to and from water. The volume compares and contrasts Israelis remarkable water security with the corresponding water insecurity of the Palestinians. The authors also set out the practical, economic, legal and ethical rationale for a revised cooperation on water security between the two peoples, proposing a workable scheme for putting into practice a new form of cooperation that would hope to benefit both peoples and strengthen their water security.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1988. The 1984 election campaign in Israel and its outcome have highlighted among other things the difference of opinion among Israelis on the future of the Occupied Territories, on the desirable geographical dimensions of the country and on the possibility of Jewish-Arab coexistence in the various regions of the Land of Israel. This book, dealing with geography and politics in Israel since 1967, is the first attempt of its kind to analyse current political events against the background of the geographical space in which they took place, and is based on a follow up, record and study of the events of recent years. The book highlights the physical background as a factor in the development of the political events as well as their relative importance. The various chapters therefore treat subjects of great interest and importance for life in Israel today, such as the future of Greater Jerusalem, the problematics of settlement in Judea-Samaria, the fate of the Gaza Strip and its relations with Israel, the status of the Golan Heights, the withdrawal from Sinai and establishment of the Shalom region, and also the problems within Israel proper: the Judaization of Galilee, the populating of the Negev, land as a political problem and border settlement in Israel.

Download or read book Israel, Jordan, and the Peace Process written by Yehuda Lukacs and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Israel and Jordan, even though self-proclaimed enemies of one another, practiced a relationship of interdependence based on corresponding interests. In the years following the 1967 war, these two countries' fates were delicately intertwined because of many factors like mutual reliance on natural resources (especially water) and parallel interests in the subordination of the Palestinian national movement. These conditions of commonality led to extensive ties between the two countries and approximated a state of de facto peace that - ironically - made an official peace treaty almost impossible to sign. A formal peace treaty would have required not only Israel's withdrawal from the West Bank but also Jordan's acknowledgment of the clandestine contacts between the two formal enemies. Yehuda Lukacs gives us an account of how this relationship changed in 1988 when Jordan disengaged from the West Bank. This event, combined with the Palestinian uprising and the Gulf War, paved the way for Israel and Jordan in 1994 to sign the Israeli-Jordanian peace treaty. By systematically examining the impact of functional cooperation between two official enemies, Lukacs makes an important contribution to Middle East studies and international conflict resolution.
