Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agriculture and Its Educational Needs We are trying very hard in New York to bring the work of our schools to the support of our industries. A year ago when I discussed the relations of public schools to the mechanical industries, I observed that the reasoning would be different as to the agricultural industries because the situations are unlike, and that I would take up that theme at some future time. I turn to it now. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Educational Agriculture Limitations of materials used in nature study, science, and agricul ture - Nature study sets itself no limitations as to the natural materials which it shall use, so long as they are in their natural relations. But little legs cannot carry students of the nature-study age very far from home, and materials sent from a distance have the defect of being out Of their natural setting. From these facts it results that nature study is environmental and its materials mainly agricultural with suburban or rural pupils. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Agriculture in the High School There must be a philosophy of secondary agricultural education. Conscious aims must be set up and their desirability established, and means and methods worked out that shall be effective in securing the realization of these aims. Clearer ideas are needed of the peda gogical principles involved, and the aims in view need to be more clearly defined. In this day of special methods for the teaching of the various school subjects, there should also be one for the teaching of agriculture. So far as our knowledge goes, there is not a book that treats of the methods of teaching this subject in the high school. A consider able amount has been written on the methods of teaching nature study in the elementary school, and the agricultural colleges have their own peculiar methods adaptable to the needs of the college student, but the field embracing school methods in secondary agri culture is still a virgin one. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agricultural Education for Teachers Prejudice, inertia, and misgivings are everywhere gradually yielding place to the new rural education. Country communities are demanding that their schools educate in terms of rural life; normal schools are rapidly instituting and perfecting departments for the training of rural teachers; and the colleges are offering courses in rural leadership, and in the teach ing of agriculture, home economics, and farm manual training. Tens of thousands of teachers have sud denly become conscious of the new demands that are being made on them. Not all may take advantage of the facilities offered by the higher institutions of learning, while many who take brief courses in sum mer sessions feel the need of keeping in constant touch with the new ideas in agricultural education along its fundamental lines of development. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Next Step in Agricultural Education or the Place of Agriculture in Our, American System of Education an Address Nor would I put all the so-called industries in one class of schools and the professions in another. In a large sense all study is professional, and in a very large sense, indeed, it is also industrial. Some portion of the training of every indi vidual should be industrial, even manual, and another portion of the training of every individual should be distinctly mental, until habits of thought are formed quite independent of material activity. For these reasons, which are fundamental, I would not separate industry from any of our schools. I would make it an integral part of every curriculum, its proportion and character depending upon the prospective profession of the individual; but above all I would have the essence of all occupations, or at least of as many as possible, represented in the same school. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Secondary Education in Agriculture in the United States The county agricultural schools were first established in Wisconsin in 1902. These schools have been equipped at the expense of the counties where they are located, but the State aids each school to the extent of a year, to be applied to the running expenses. The course of study in each school extends over two years and is of quite a practical character, including agriculture, wood working, iron work ing, and domestic science, besides local United States history, civil government, and commercial arithmetic. County agricultural schools are also found in Maryland, Michigan, and Mississippi. The statistics for the normal schools have already been given, show ing that over 100 normal schools in the country are giving instruction in agriculture. This instruction is quite different in character in different schools. In some cases there is a regular course by a special instructor who is a graduate of an agricultural college. In other cases the teaching of agriculture has been taken up by the science teacher. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beginnings in Agriculture This book is designed for the purpose of introducing the study of \a.griculture into the seventh and eighth grades of our elementary schools. It may also meet a need in some of the smaller high schools and in ungraded Special and private schools. When the pupil comes to well-developed high-school work, he will need a more detailed and specific text. The book is founded on the suggestions in the Report of the Committee on Industrial Education in Schools for Rural Communi ties, Of the National Educational Association. That Committee recommended for the school years 6 to 8, four sets of subjects as follows: first half year, the affairs Of agriculture; second half year, the soil; second year, farming schemes and crops; third year, ani mals. A condensation Of this plan into a two-year scheme has been attempted in the present volume. It has been the aim Of the author to cover the work very largely in a nature-study Spirit, by which it is meant that the pupil Shall be brought into as close touch as possible with the actual farms, soils, crops, animals, and affairs. The problems are intended to set the pupils at work on their own account rather than to enable them to answer questions that may be suggested in the text. It is, of course, essential to practical school conditions that there shall be reading-matter and recitation-matter in the book. Perhaps Part I, dealing with the general agricultural situation, may be used as a series Of introductory reading and discussion exercises, the actual work with subject-matter to begin with Part II. The open book method of teaching, now used successfully in many schools for history and geography, might be employed advantageously with this text, especially in schools in which nature-study receives little attention. It is assumed that the teacher will see that the pupils work out the problems, Or as many of them as have useful application to the affairs of the particular community. It is to be hoped that there will be a school-garden on the premises, or that small areas may be set aside at the homes of the pupils, on which many of the sug gestions in the book may be worked out personally. It is specially to be desired that the parents be brought into the work, in order that the agricultural affairs of the community may be related to the school. Therefore, a large number of problems have been pre sented with this end in view, the expectation being that the pupil will ask the parents for the proper solution of the questions. This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Address on the Educational Values of Courses in Agriculture The wider range of studies characteristic of modern education has grown out of the fact that new subjects have proved themselves to have a utility similar to that contained in the older curriculum in realizing the aims and results of education. The conclusion that education should embrace man's relation to all forms of human activity has been accepted. The technical and industrial have as clear a title to a place in any complete system of education as the literary or the professional. The paper read by Dr. True before the Graduate Summer School of Agriculture is an effort to set forth the claim of Agricultural courses to a place in our educational system and to justify their educational value. It is worth while to call attention to the popular misconception of these courses which amounts to a prejudice against them. The paper will, upon a careful reading, clear away many errors and give a clearer view of the current work in agricultural science. If the current opinion that nature study is a valuable element in the education of our children be accepted the conclusion that a wider study of nature through the avenue of the natural sciences would be increasingly helpful can not easily be resisted. The utter loneliness of a large proportion of our population in the presence of the Creator's universe of life and thought relations is a sufficient evidence of ignorance to warrant an attempt at its removal. Agricultural education aims to bring the student into intelligent and sympathetic cooperation with the world in which he must live and labor. Moreover this broader sympathy cultivated is not without its value in other than agricultural lines. An examination into the content of an agricultural course will reveal the fact that its students would be a decided acquisition to many of our secondary schools as teachers by reason of their training. In the interest of truth it may be well to note that an agricultural course as laid down in our colleges is no more exclusively of agriculture than the so-called philosophical courses are of philosophy. Assuming that the end of education is to prepare men to live, it is proper to consider whether the subjects that directly engage a large proportion of our people and deeply affect many more ought not to have a place in our courses of study and competent teachers to present them. Dr. True's paper is a clear presentation of the claims of agricultural science and is worthy of a thoughtful reading by teachers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Agriculture in the Public Schools Here again one can give no intelligent answer until one knows definitely what courses in secondary agriculture involve, the laboratory equipment needed, and the training demanded of the teacher. Then one needs to know the actual equipment of our high schools and high school teach ers, and the possibilities for training such teachers as are needed for this work. All of the facts which are needed to answer intelligently these and other questions involved in the introduction of agriculture into our pub lic schools are easily obtainable. To blunder ahead without first study ing carefully these facts and providing a rational plan, based upon the results of the experience of others and upon a knowledge of the facts involved, would be an educational and political crime. This Bulletin attempts to give briefly these facts. While we do not propose to offer here a complete plan for the intro duction of agriculture into the public schools, we feel that the facts which are presented make clear at least the following points. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Agriculture Elementary Agriculture is an attempt to utilize the social values of farm life as educative material; it aims to make country boys and girls love farm life, not only because this life is worthy and wholesome, but because farming, if directed by a trained mind, is a most interesting and profitable calling. This book places the emphasis on doing something as a home exercise or project, both for its educational and for its material value; it aims to correlate with farm life, when possible, such related subjects as arithmetic, history, literature, geography and the sciences generally; and it gives pointed suggestions at the end of each chapter for practical and productive work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agricultural Education: Historically Considered It is a long step from the scholastic education of the Middle Ages to the practical education attempted in the scientific and technical schools of to-day; but it is natural that the rebellion against the former should end in the establishment of the latter. Bacon himself probably never had a conception of such a result, yet it has been the logical outcome of his philosophy. Since that philosophy produced an entire series of new sciences, his disciples could not consistently do otherwise than introduce these sciences in their plan of education, even at the expense of the studies most honored by Bacon himself. To the oft-repeated assertion, that he tried to make thought practical, may be added the other assertion, that this century threatens to exclude from education everything but the practical. In carrying out the plans for practical education, scientific and technical schools have been founded, apparently with very modest intentions, and have then been pushed into positions which sometimes must seem as surprising to their founders as to their competitors. At first thought, it would seem that a training for a special occupation would never enter the plane of a liberal education in a college with a long-established course.
